Book excerpt: From the acclaimed Beat writer, Jack Kerouac’s unique collection of personal travel writing, now reissued following his centenary celebration In his first directly autobiographical book, Jack Kerouac relates the exhilarating stories of the years he spent restlessly traveling and writing his acclaimed novels. He journeys from the California deserts crisscrossed by train tracks to the bullfights of Mexico to the Beat nightlife of New York City, and across the Atlantic to Paris, Morocco, and London. With echoes of landscapes that appear in his other novels, including The Dharma Bums and Desolation Angels, and featuring his distinctive exuberant style and “jazzy impressionistic prose” (New Yorker), Lonesome Traveler is a unique addition to Kerouac’s body of work. Book excerpt: Elizabeth and her brother live on a farm for a summer—and learn a whole new way of living and dreaming Elizabeth likes to invent stories. When she travels to her uncle’s farm for a summer, she starts by making up new names for herself and her younger brother: “Geeder” and “Toeboy.” As “Geeder” explores the farm on her own and with her brother, she encounters mysteries that capture her imagination, among them a tall, proud woman who looks just like an African queen that Elizabeth has read about in a magazine. Elizabeth spins tales about the people and places around her, but she comes to realize that sometimes the truth is more interesting than make-believe.

Book excerpt: I asked the Lord what men/woman seek and lack in their lives today. The Lord answered and said, Their identity in Christ. I asked the Lord to show me a man and reveal the identity of such man in Christ. The Lord answered and said, I will show you the identity of a man after my own heart. What did I know about David? I knew that he was a shepherd boy who slew a giant. I mean, who would not be fascinated by a story of a boy that slays giants? As I progressed through the journey of studying the Bible about the life of David, I continuously wondered why David was called a man after Gods own heart. Why did God not refer to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, or Moses as men after his own heart? The story of David portrays a life of an ordinary shepherd boy that became the king of Israel. His life, however, was ridden with sin, and yet God called him a man after his own heart. It was only later that the Spirit revealed to me that it was because of Davids fierce intimate desire to have a relationship with the living God that he was characterized as a man after his own heart (Acts 13: 22). God revealed the character of David through this story that runs parallel with the personal relationship that Jesus longs for with each one of usa relationship that cannot be tainted by our sins because of the blood of Jesus Christ. You are all called for a time like this to be a man/woman after Gods own heart just as he had ordained it so that you can have fellowship and an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. You are the only one that can find your true identity through your relationship with Christ! A shepherd boy became king! What are you waiting for? The blood of Jesus works everlasting into the past, future, and present. May the story of David inspire you to a greater understanding of the heart of God the father through his son, Jesus Christ. You have been set free! You are a man/ woman after Gods own heart because of Jesus. John 8 verse 36 states, When the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed.

Book excerpt: Since 1983, Aki Kaurismäki has made classically styled films filled with cinephilic references to film history, influencing Jim Jarmusch, Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson. Yet the director is often depicted as the loneliest, most nostalgic of Finns (except when promoting his films, making political statements and running his many businesses). Drawing on revisionist approaches to film authorship, this text links Kaurismäki's work to issues in film aesthetics and history, nostalgia, late modernity, commerce, film festivals, and national cinema.

Book excerpt: Best known for his novel Trout Fishing in America, American writer Richard Gary Brautigan (1935-1984) published eleven novels, ten poetry collections, and two story collections, as well as five volumes of collected work, several nonfiction essays, and a record album of spoken voice recordings. Brautigan's idiosyncratic style and humor caused him to be identified with the counterculture movement of the 1960s. The authors of many of these 32 essays knew Brautigan personally and professionally; others came to know and respect him through a cultivated connection with his writings. The essays--many of which are new, others of which were published in obscure journals--combine personal remembrance of the man and critical appraisal of his still-controversial works. Includes previously unpublished photographs and artworks.

Book excerpt: Joel Plaskett has earned an awful lot of honourifics in his career so far, counting folk hero, indie darling, and national treasure among them. And that's just since the Halifax musician started making records of his own in 1999. For a decade before that, he was one-quarter of Thrush Hermit, a band of scrappy Superchunk mimics who became hard-rock revivalists and one of the last survivors of the '90s pop "explosion" of major-label interest in Halifax. Canada's east coast has never been much of a pop-culture mecca. Most musicians from the region who've ever made it big moved away. But armed with a stubborn streak and a knack for great songwriting, Plaskett has kept Halifax as his home, building both a career and a music community there. Along the way, he's earned great respect: when he plays shows in Alberta, east-coast expats literally thank him for staying home. Nowhere With You is the study of how he pulled this off, from the origins of Canada's east-coast exodus to Plaskett's anointment as "Halifax's Rick Rubin." It's a story about what happens when you call a city "the new Seattle," about the lessons you learn playing to empty rooms in Oklahoma, and about defying radio-single expectations with rock operas and triple records. It's about doing what you want, where you want, no matter how much work it takes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and soul of any science are its problems. This is particularly true of mathematics, which, not referring to any physical reality, consists only of its problems, their solutions, and, most excitingly, the challenges they pose. Mathematical problems come in many flavours, from simple puzzles to major open problems. The problems stimulate, the stories of their successful solutions inspire, and their applications are wide. The literature abounds with books dedicated to mathematical problems — collections of problems, hints on how to solve them, and even histories of the paths to the solutions of some famous ones. The present book, aimed at the proverbial “bright high-school student”, takes a different, more philosophical approach, first dividing mathematical problems into three broad classes — puzzles, exercises, and open problems — and discussing their various roles in one’s mathematical education. Various chapters are devoted to discussing examples of each type of problem, along with their solutions and some of the developments arising from them. For the truly dedicated reader, more involved material is offered in an appendix. Mathematics does not exist in a vacuum, whence the author peppers the material with frequent extra-mathematical cultural references. The mathematics itself is elementary, for the most part pre-calculus. The few references to the calculus use the integral notation which the reader need not truly be familiar with, opting to read the integral sign as strange notation for area or as operationally defined by the appropriate buttons on his or her graphing calculator. Nothing further is required. Advance praise for Mathematical Problems "There are many books on mathematical problems, but Smoryński’s compelling book offers something unique. Firstly, it includes a fruitful classification and analysis of the nature of mathematical problems. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, it leads the reader from clear and often amusing accounts of traditional problems to the serious mathematics that grew out of some of them." - John Baldwin, University of Illinois at Chicago "Smoryński manages to discuss the famous puzzles from the past and the new items in various modern theories with the same elegance and personality. He presents and solves puzzles and traditional topics with a laudable sense of humor. Readers of all ages and training will find the book a rich treasure chest." - Dirk van Dalen, Universiteit Utrecht
