Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author and railway photographer presents a stunning collection of original images showing steam locomotives in action in the mid-20th century. This is the second book from David Knapman’s personal record of railway views that were captured on black and white film in the late 1950’s and 1960’s, until the demise of steam on British Railways. Using the same format as its companion volume, Steam on the Southern and Western, this book presents chapters covering different locations in the Eastern and London Midland regions. Knapman captures branch and mainline trains as well as locations of interest and historical infrastructure. Where preservation starts to overlap with the still active steam scene, some historic photographs are also included. Each chapter begins with an overview of the station it depicts, providing local and historical context. Each photograph is paired with a detailed caption describing the specific trains at work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L M S & L N E R Steam Locomotives, is the result of over two decades of photographing steam locomotives in action in many parts of Britain covered by the former LMS and LNER Railway Companies. They were the two largest of the ‘Big Four’ Railway Companies which operated in Britain between 1923 and 1948. The majority of the photographs were taken during the British Railways era between 1948 and 1968. Although the author Malcolm Clegg has a sizeable collection of steam locomotive photographs taken during this period, the photographs which appear in this book are from the private collection of his lifelong friend and family relative, Mr Peter Cookson (a retired school-master), himself a railway historian, author and amateur photographer, who has kindly provided the photographs for publication in this book. Many of the photographs selected are rare and unusual for a variety of reasons which should appeal to railway historians and steam enthusiasts alike.

Book excerpt: During the last years of steam traction, many enthusiasts travelled the length and breadth of the country recording the diminishing numbers of steam locomotives which were still at work. A number of photographers and other enthusiasts got involved in cleaning the locomotives involved in these workings to ensure that the locomotives due in service were in as presentable a condition as possible. One of these photographers was David Williams. During the decade leading up to the demise of steam in August 1968, he took countless thousands of photographs covering steam on the main line. From this collection of photographs, the bulk of which is previously unpublished, Ian Allan Publishing is producing a new series of pictorial books featuring each of the BR regions. The first title in the Last Years of Steam series features steam workings in the author's native London Midland Region. Drawing upon his own collection, supplemented where necessary with the work of other photographers, the author provides an extraordinary record of the final years of LMR steam ranging in scope from the great Stanier Pacifics on the West Coast main line to the humble shunters. With nostalgia for the 1960s and the transition from steam to diesel growing ever stronger, this new series from Ian Allan Publishing is ideally timed to capitalise on the burgeoning interest in the period.

Book excerpt: The disappearance of the steam locomotive in the land of its birth touched the hearts of millions, but when the government announced the Modernisation Plan for Britain's railways in 1955, under which steam was to be phased out in favour of diesel and electric traction, few people took it seriously. Steam locomotives were an integral part of our daily lives and had been for almost one and a half centuries. Furthermore, they were still being built in large numbers. It was popularly believed that they would see the century out and probably well beyond that. But the reality was that by 1968 a mere thirteen years after the Modernisation Plan steam traction had disappeared from Britain's main line railways. It was harrowing to witness the breaking up of engines, which were the icons of their day, capable of working long-distance inter-city expresses weighing 400 tons on schedules faster than a mile a minute. Top speeds of 100mph were not unknown. This book chronicles the last few years as scrap yards all over Britain went into overtime, cutting up thousands of locomotives and releasing a bounty of more than a million tons of scrap whilst the engines, which remained in service, were a shadow of their former selves; filthy, wheezing and clanking their way to an ignominious end. The pictures in this book are augmented by essays written by Colin Garratt at the time. Although steam disappeared from the main line network it survives in everdwindling numbers on industrial systems such as collieries, ironstone mines, power stations, shipyards, sugar factories, paper mills and docks. In such environments steam traction eked out a further decade and during this time many of the industrial locations closed rendering the locomotives redundant. The British steam locomotive was born amid the coalfields and was destined to die there one and three quarter centuries later.
