Pageantry and the keeping of festivals, having nearly vanished from London life, no longer inspire our poets. The notion of hailing and celebrating London on high occasions seems alien to modern ideas. One may regret this one may regret that the opportunities of last year were not taken, and that of the many poets who apostrophised the Empire and England a few did not glorify London, the heart of both. A few of these lyrics have appeared in Pearson's Magazine, Westminster Gazette, Poetry, John o' London's Weekly, Chambers's Journal, The People's Friend, West Africa, United Empire, Saturday Evening Post, Occult Review, etc.; and the author begs leave to thank the Editors of these several periodicals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Lyrics From Dryden to Burns At first this loss was not felt, for in London and at the court a school Of poets Sprang up in the sixteenth cen tury, who provided for the educated Classes beautiful lyrics in imitation Of French and Italian songs. They were helped and encouraged in this art by the fact that there was then a very general taste for music; and a number Of composers wrote excellent melodies for their words. Lyric poetry though Of a different kind from the Old popular songs was thus in a flourishing condi tion, not only at the court, and in the houses Of culti yated people, but also in the theaters, and in the homes Of shop-keeping Londoners. Almost all of the play wrights Of the time, including Shakespeare Of course, were excellent song-writers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Marvell's Liminal Lyrics: The Space Between is an interdisciplinary study of the major lyric poems of seventeenth-century British metaphysical poet Andrew Marvell. The poet and his work have generally proven enigmatic to scholars because both refuse to fit into normal categories and expectations. This study invites Marvell readers to view the poet and some of his representative lyrics in the context of the anthropological concept of liminality as developed by Victor Turner and enriched by Arnold Van Gennep, Jacques Lacan, and other observers of the in-between aspects of experience. The approach differs from previous attempts to “explain” Marvell in that it allows multidisciplinary and multi-media contexts in a broad matrix of the areas of experience and representation that defy boundaries, that blur the line at which entrance becomes exit. This study acknowledges that the poems discussed, and, by implication, the entire corpus of Marvell’s work and the life that produced it, derive from a refusal to draw a definite divide. In analyzing a small selection of Marvell’s life and lyrics as explorations of various realms of liminality in word and image, readers can see a passageway to the poet’s works that never really reaches a destination; instead, the unlimited possibilities of the journey remain. Thus, the in-between aspects of the poet and his poetry actually define his technique as well as his brilliance.

Bridget and Heinz Henisch concern themselves with the reception accorded to the new art by professionals, amateurs, and the general public. They examine reactions to the new invention in the press, literature, poetry, music, and fashion; the response of intellectuals and painters; and the beliefs held by prominent photographers concerning the nature of the medium and its mission. With a wide array of images - many never before published - they illustrate the photograph's use as a record of public and private moments in life.

The authors explore the development of poetic genres, from the panegyric (qaside), to short lyrical poems (ghazal), and the quatrains (roba'i), tracing the stylistic evolution of Persian poetry up to 1500 and examine the vital role of these poetic forms within the rich landscape of Persian literature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends and Lyrics: Together With a Chaplet of Verses IN the Spring of the year 1853, I observed, as con ductor of the weekly journal, household words, a short poem among the proffered contributions, very different, as I thought, from the shoal of verses perpetually setting through the office of such a periodical, and possessing much more merit. Its authoress was quite unknown to me. She was one miss mary berwick, whom I had never heard of; and she was to be addressed by letter, if addressed at all, at a circulating library in the western district of London. Through this channel, Miss Berwick was informed that her poem was accepted, and was invited to send another. She complied, and became a regular and frequent contributor. Many letters passed between the journal and Miss Berwick, but Miss Berwick herself was never seen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
