From Tom Sawyer to Harry Potter, most of the middle-grade stories celebrate boys as the adventurous heroes. They are the ones who always capture and keep the worlds attention. Here you meet an alternative heroine who saves the day. She is a girl, and her name is Charlotte. Charlottes Magical Adventures is an enchanting tale that is inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. It is a tender story of an unconventional friendship between a young girl from our contemporary world and the prince of Candyland. Their upbringing differed, but they were united in the purity of their souls, their willingness to help, and the openness of their hearts. Loving and giving Charlotte is a wonderful friend who is smart, sensitive, courageous, inventive, and heroic in her own quiet way. Prince Lollipop for the first time experienced loss, death, betrayals, loneliness, and fear, and he accepted and fought those challenges in a valiant way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tychomancy—meaning “the divination of chances”—presents a set of rules for inferring the physical probabilities of outcomes from the causal or dynamic properties of the systems that produce them. Probabilities revealed by the rules are wide-ranging: they include the probability of getting a 5 on a die roll, the probability distributions found in statistical physics, and the probabilities that underlie many prima facie judgments about fitness in evolutionary biology. Michael Strevens makes three claims about the rules. First, they are reliable. Second, they are known, though not fully consciously, to all human beings: they constitute a key part of the physical intuition that allows us to navigate around the world safely in the absence of formal scientific knowledge. Third, they have played a crucial but unrecognized role in several major scientific innovations. A large part of Tychomancy is devoted to this historical role for probability inference rules. Strevens first analyzes James Clerk Maxwell’s extraordinary, apparently a priori, deduction of the molecular velocity distribution in gases, which launched statistical physics. Maxwell did not derive his distribution from logic alone, Strevens proposes, but rather from probabilistic knowledge common to all human beings, even infants as young as six months old. Strevens then turns to Darwin’s theory of natural selection, the statistics of measurement, and the creation of models of complex systems, contending in each case that these elements of science could not have emerged when or how they did without the ability to “eyeball” the values of physical probabilities.

Book excerpt: A Brazilian Lord of the Flies, about a group of boys who live by their wits and daring in the slums of Bahia A Penguin Classics They call themselves “Captains of the Sands,” a gang of orphans and runaways who live by their wits and daring in the torrid slums and sleazy back alleys of Bahia. Led by fifteen-year-old “Bullet,” the band—including a crafty liar named “Legless,” the intellectual “Professor,” and the sexually precocious “Cat”—pulls off heists and escapades against the right and privileged of Brazil. But when a public outcry demands the capture of the “little criminals,” the fate of these children becomes a poignant, intensely moving drama of love and freedom in a shackled land. Captains of the Sands captures the rich culture, vivid emotions, and wild landscape of Bahia with penetrating authenticity and brilliantly displays the genius of Brazil’s most acclaimed author. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Book excerpt: This is the incredible story of the scientists who created a coronavirus vaccine in record time. In Longshot, investigative journalist David Heath takes readers inside the small group of scientists whose groundbreaking work was once largely dismissed but whose feat will now eclipse the importance of Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine in medical history. With never-before-reported details, Heath reveals how these scientists overcame countless obstacles to give the world an unprecedented head start when we needed a COVID-19 vaccine. The story really begins in the 1990s, with a series of discoveries that were timed perfectly to prepare us for the worst pandemic since 1918. Readers will meet Katalin Karikó, who made it possible to use messenger RNA in vaccines but struggled for years just to hang on to her job. There’s also Derrick Rossi, who leveraged Karikó’s work to found Moderna but was eventually expelled from his company. And then there’s Barney Graham at the National Institutes of Health, who had a career-long obsession with solving the riddle of why two toddlers died in a vaccine trial in 1966, a tragedy that ultimately led to a critical breakthrough in vaccine science. With both foresight and luck, Graham and these other crucial scientists set the course for a coronavirus vaccine years before COVID-19 emerged in Wuhan, China. The author draws on hundreds of hours of interviews with key players to tell the definitive story about how the race to create the vaccine sparked a revolution in medical science.

Other times, we see them as family members. Zippy was a family member to me and my family. He gave us great joy. This is an educational and moral-oriented story with a splash of humor. Every chapter describes different events in Zippy's life that makes the reader want to know more about him. People will enjoy reading this book. The book is easy to read, especially for beginners. The book is about Zippy protecting the house from invaders. It talks about Zippy loving when it was hard to love. He was caring to the point of laying his own life down. In addition, he made friends with the unfriendly. For a small creature, he had a big heart that is described throughout the chapters in this book. We can learn from observing creatures. I learned that every life is precious and has a purpose. I wrote about Zippy so that the love he transpired could be transmitted through the words in this book and never be forgotten. Finally, I believe children will be able to learn from this book. They will not only be intrigued to read but also to be considerate when they have their own pet. A pet is a gift. They will understand that pets have feelings too.
