Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logical Process of Social Development: A Theoretical Foundation for Education Policy From the Standpoint of Sociology The social process in its logical character is here regarded as the process of the selective survival of types of personality. This process of course takes place under the natural conditions of personal association and through the historical tendencies of the social organization. The development of the social population is thus systematically realized by man's membership in typical groups capable of being coordinated in the common pursuit of a more or less conscious social policy. Social policy requires us to recognize two primary factors - the natural conditions and the historical conceptions by which aggregates of men in organized association are influenced. The purpose here is to study the conceptual life of social aggregates as historically organized in order to arrive at some statement of the logical modes and the forms of their reckoning as communities and peoples. Developmental and social psychologists are currently converging on the developmental roots of social cognitive abilities. This timely 1983 book offers a useful overview of research and theory concerning social cognition and social behaviour in children at the time of this book's publication. A full range of theoretical approaches is represented, key problems are systematically reviewed, and research programmes and perspectives of leading psychologists in the field are summarised.

Book Synopsis Theoretical Logic in Sociology by : Jeffrey C. Alexander
Download or read book Theoretical Logic in Sociology written by Jeffrey C. Alexander and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 1669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four volume work, originally published in the 1980s and out of print for some years, represents a major attempt to redirect the course of contemporary sociological thought. Jeffrey Alexander analyses the most general and fundamental elements of sociological thinking about action and order and their ramifications for empirical study. He insists that sociological thought need not choose between voluntary action and social constraint. The four volumes can be read independently of one another as each presents a distinctive theoretical argument in its own right. The first volume is directed at contemporary problems and controversies, not only in ‘theory’ but in the philosophy and sociology of science. The last three volumes make interpretations, confronting the individual theorists, and the secondary literature, on their own terms.

Book Synopsis Foundations of Developmental Psychology by : Richard C. LaBarba
Download or read book Foundations of Developmental Psychology written by Richard C. LaBarba and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Developmental Psychology is designed for the student seeking a comprehensive introduction to developmental psychology as a developmental science. The intent is to introduce the field in a manner comparable to the introductory courses that college students take in biology, chemistry, or physics. The emphasis is on the empirical and theoretical foundations of fundamental human development. The book attempts to trace the origins and processes of various developmental events. Developmental phenomena are presented by topics rather than by chronological, age-related patterns of development. This arrangement of the subject matter provides for more efficient study, integration, and synthesis of the material, along with a more organized view of development. Key topics discussed include the genetic foundations of development; prenatal factors in development; the biological notion of maturation and its significance for development; motor and perceptual development; and cognitive, intellectual, language, emotional, personality, and social development. Although this text is written for undergraduate students in psychology, it can be understood by students in any discipline who have a grasp of introductory psychology and biology.
