Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logic and Argument Ist. Definition of Logic. - Logic may be treated either as a science or an art, or both. AS a science it seeks to determine what are called the laws of thought, which is represented in the three processes of conception, judgment, and reasoning. AS an art it applies these laws or rules to every-day thought. Thus a science teaches us to know, and art to do. But the distinction does not require to be urged for present purposes. The object here is to se lect just those parts of both aspects that are suit able to systematic and logical discourse, as dis tinct from mere description, on the one hand, and pure science on the other. Consequently we may speak and think of logic from its practical side, or so much of it as pertains to orderly methods of statement and argument. Logic for this purpose will consist of the rules that regulate correct thinking and systematic presentation of ideas, more especially in the form of argument. As a whole it has two objects to fulfil: (i) To deter mine the general laws of thought which are called the formal principles of thinking, and (2) To ex plain the conditions under which these laws are to be applied and to be modified by the irregularities of language and common speech. The first object considers logic as apure science, the second as an applied Science or art. Only the latter aspect will enter'into the purpose of the present treatise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Argumentation and Debate The aim of this book is twofold: (1) to present briefly and clearly the theory of argumentation, (2) to furnish a sufficient number of complete debates for a thorough course in analysis and briefing. The discussion of argumentative theory has been condensed, therefore, and, while illustrated to the point of clearness, is suggestive rather than exhaustive, in order that it may be more fully tested in a study of the selections. Some emphasis has been placed upon the principles of logic for the reason that a knowledge of formal logic on the part of the student cannot be presumed. Furthermore, considerable space has been devoted to a study of evidence as it is found in the courts of law. This material will justify itself for the reason that the legal mind is the one best adapted to debate and for the reason that the debater who confines himself within the limitations imposed by the courts not only builds up a stronger argument but is also better prepared to destroy an opposing argument. The selections have been taken from great debates on critical and living issues of American history, politics, and law. For several reasons they will be found well adapted for analysis and briefing. In the first place, they were delivered by men long practiced in controversy, by men thoroughly trained in life's school of practical affairs. In the second place, the questions debated were at the time of the discussions, and still are, of vital moment to the American people. Hence they are of strong interest to every thoughtful student. First, a distinction has been drawn between the Act of Inference and the Process of Inference, and a separate chapter has been devoted to each. This will probably be found to simplify the explanation of Reasoning and to bring out the essential identity of form which underlies the various types of argument. We assume the existence, says Mr. Alfred Sidgwick, oi uniformities in nature - natural laws; the narrowing down of these into exactitude being the endless problem of discovery, and the completest knowledge of them already attained at any period being, for that period, the basis of all explanation, prediction, and proof. Book excerpt: Guided by 20th century theories of language, Hansen's novel approach to interpretive theory launched the modern analytical study of Ancient Chinese philosophy. This 1983 publication challenged authority-based traditional "religious" accounts stemming from 18th and 19th century missionary dictionaries and reliance on interpretive authority. "Hansen shows that one tiny grammatical question... has profound implications for the understanding of Chinese philosophy. ...This is surely a decisive breakthrough ... a great success. His observations about Chinese thought in general are always stimulating and illuminating. A book which excites one to rethink things from the foundations." A. C. Graham "An ambitious and provocative book concerning the relationship between language and thought in ancient China. ... a novel and powerful theory about the nature of classical Chinese language ... a better understanding of many issues in classical Chinese philosophy." P. J. Ivanhoe "[The] importance of this book lies ... in its engaging style, novel ideas, and rigorous argumentation, which can serve as a model for future work in Chinese philosophy. Hansen takes Chinese philosophy seriously as philosophy. For anyone tired of the superficial summaries or scholastic commentaries that so often characterize this field, Hansen's book will be a memorable and welcome change." Michael Martin

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Argumentative Writing This book arises out of certain beliefs concerning the study of argumentation, which, though perhaps not wholly novel, have as yet found no recognition in the lit erature of the subject. The first of these beliefs is that the principles of argumentation should be derived by the student from its practice before the practice is made to conform to the principles. In short - one may as well acknowledge it - a firm faith in the so-called inductive method as applied to argumentation lies at the root of this treatise. Such a faith implies, of course, that the student should be asked to dissect out logical formulae for himself from his own unconscious reasonings, using them, when discovered, to render those reasonings more exact. The construction and the rough analysis of arguments would, similarly, precede the formulation of any princi ples of persuasion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction to the Study of Logic This is only another way Of putting the Scholastic division of Logic into Formal and Material; Formal Logic or Dialectics answering to the act Of the agent (see definitions at p. 10, et seq., referred to at p. 17) Material Logic, to the end Of the act. And, as Truth is something else besides the end Of the act Of reasoning, as it can be gained in other ways, and is manifested bylaws outside our minds, -and as Material Logic has Truth for its matter, it follows that these laws must fall within the scope Of this Material Logic. In this division a knowledge Of the agent of the act is presupposed. A distinction is Often made between Natural and Artificial Logic, Natural Logic means the natural reasoning that leads men to Truth, or that would do so, if it were possible for them always to follow the light Of reason. Artificial Logic may be briefly called the science of Natural Logic, for it does no more than give an exact and methodical Shape to the rules delivered by nature; just as in music, or painting, or sculpture, the technicalities Of the art merely throw natural rules into order and method. And, as the art-student naturally acquires delicacy Of perception in all that concerns his art; so does the study Of Logic give delicacy Of intellectual touch to distinguish Truth, and a peculiar power Of dis cerning Truth, and Of unmasking error when it lurks under the guise Of Truth.
