Book Synopsis Logging in Plumas County by : Scott J. Lawson
Download or read book Logging in Plumas County written by Scott J. Lawson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located within the northern Sierra Nevada mountain range, the forests of Plumas County were once seen as a source of endless timber. Lumber was needed during the Gold Rush for water flumes, mine timbers, and an array of buildings. While timber was abundant, the abilities of the early settlers to harvest, transport, and mill the logs were often very limited. Markets remained relatively local throughout the second half of the 19th century until the completion of the Western Pacific Railroad in 1909. This sparked a new rush of industry into the region. Vast tracts of untapped Plumas County timber were bought up by speculators, and many sawmills were erected. Logging in the western United States moved from animal power to steam engines to internal combustion in the space of about 50 years. While Plumas County's lumber industry was reflective of these developments, it also found its own identity as a timber-producing region that was nearly unequaled.

The words are written by a man that spent a good part of his youth in those camps during the 1930¿s and 40¿s. That life style made a permanent impression on that man and led to a career in forestry and a profound love of the outdoors. And now, in the evening of his life he writes about those experiences as he takes his `walk back in time¿.

Book excerpt: Situated among the forests and lakes of northeastern California where the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges meet, the town of Quincy is both picturesque and steeped in local history-from the Maidu Native Americans who first lived in the American Valley now called Quincy to the flood of people who came in the mid-1800s searching for gold. Quincy was born when Hugh J. Bradley, who helped organized Plumas County in 1854, laid out the town and named it after his home city in Illinois. Now the county's seat of government, Quincy boasts many attractive downtown buildings that have become the focus of the community's historic preservation and restoration efforts.

Download or read book Mountain Maidu and Pioneers written by Patricia Kurtz and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BEGINNING WITH THE GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION of Indian Valley, Pat continues with descriptions of Mountain Maidu life upon the arrival of white men searching for gold in the northeastern Sierra. Initially relations remain peaceful between the Indians and whites, but eventually conflicts arise as tribal lands were taken from the Indians. Later, some whites with government entities made unsuccessful attempts to civilize the natives. Additional demands were made upon the Indian to abandon his traditions and language. Some did embrace the new life style, but many continued to practice cultural traditions while being slowly drawn into a foreign way of life. These are their stories. This Masters Thesis written by Patricia Lindgren Kurtz in 1963 was termed excellent by Dr. Katherine Dresden, Professor of Education at Chico State College. Dr. Clarence F. McIntosh, Professor of History and former president of the conference of California Historical Societies said, Mrs. Kurtz has compiled the most valuable information ever collected about the Indians of her locale.
