Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the opening section, the author examines Europe and the world on the eve of the revolution, describing in detail not only the countries which were immediately affected by the cataclysm in France but also those which awakened slowly to the call of liberty. He then presents a vivid narrative of events in France, analyzing the series of revolts--by the aristocracy, the bourgeoisie, the towns, and the peasantry--which set in motion the inexorable course of social, economic, and political upheaval. The forces that propelled the revolution, as well as the personalities responsible for day-to-day decisions during this momentous period, are described with great insight."--From publisher.

The founder of modern chemistry, Lavoisier (1743-1794) was active on commisions connected with agriculture, gunpowder, banking, and finance, and was ultimately executed during the Reign of Terror. This biography recounts Lavoisier's scientific accomplishments and his role in the chemical revolution and early history of organic chemistry and physiology; but it is in the examination of his political and economic activities and accomplishments that it breaks new ground. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The studies of which this book is the result have from the beginning been guided by and in the end confirmed the somewhat old-fashioned conviction of the author that it is human ideas which govern the development of human affairs," Hayek wrote in his notes in 1940. Indeed, Studies on the Abuse and Decline of Reason remains Hayek’s greatest unfinished work and is here presented for the first time under the expert editorship of Bruce Caldwell. In the book, Hayek argues that the abuse and decline of reason was caused by hubris, by man’s pride in his ability to reason, which in Hayek’s mind had been heightened by the rapid advance and multitudinous successes of the natural sciences, and the attempt to apply natural science methods in the social sciences.

Book excerpt: This investigation not only revises what historians have long thought of the attitude of barristers toward the French Revolution, but also offers insights into the corporate character of Old Regime society and how the Revolution affected it. Fitzsimmons's study suggests that many propertied commoners during the Revolution were not politically engaged, that they were not necessarily associated with a party or cause simply because of their place within a set of social relationships.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that the condition of the provincial French collèges during the Revolution contrasted sharply with the expectations of legislators sitting in Paris. The latter consistently endeavored to create a system of secondary education, but they succeeded only in establishing (after 1795) an inadequate number of écoles centrales. Meanwhile a majority of the collèges - faced with problems of divided administrators, insufficient money, scarce teachers, and vanishing students - ceased to operate. Yet, some local authorities reorganized their schools and provided for them a progressive new curriculum. In general, centralizing tendencies doomed important local attempts at reorganization, perhaps to the detriment of the future of French secondary education.
