Book Synopsis The Rhetoric of Topics and Forms by : Gianna Zocco
Download or read book The Rhetoric of Topics and Forms written by Gianna Zocco and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress “The Many Languages of Comparative Literature” includes articles that study thematic and formal elements of literary texts. Although the question of prioritizing either the level of content or that of form has often provoked controversies, most contributions here treat them as internally connected. While theoretical considerations inform many of the readings, the main interest of most articles can be described as rhetorical (in the widest sense) – given that the ancient discipline of rhetoric did not only include the study of rhetorical figures and tropes such as metaphor, irony, or satire, but also that of topoi, which were originally viewed as the ‘places’ where certain arguments could be found, but later came to represent the arguments or intellectual themes themselves. Another feature shared by most of the articles is the tendency of ‘undeclared thematology’, which not only reflects the persistence of the charge of positivism, but also shows that most scholars prefer to locate themselves within more specific, often interdisciplinary fields of literary study. In this sense, this volume does not only prove the ongoing relevance of traditional fields such as rhetoric and thematology, but provides contributions to currently flourishing research areas, among them literary multilingualism, literature and emotions, and ecocriticism.

Book Synopsis Jacques Derrida (Routledge Revivals) by : William Schultz
Download or read book Jacques Derrida (Routledge Revivals) written by William Schultz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992, this book represents the first major attempt to compile a bibliography of Derrida’s work and scholarship about his work. It attempts to be comprehensive rather than selective, listing primary and secondary works from the year of Derrida’s Master’s thesis in 1954 up until 1991, and is extensively annotated. It arranges under article type a huge number of works from scholars across numerous fields — reflecting the interdisciplinary and controversial nature of Deconstruction. The substantial introduction and annotations also make this bibliography, in part, a critical guide and as such will make a highly useful reference tool for those studying his philosophy.
Book Synopsis Subversive Subjects by : Judith Holland Sarnecki
Download or read book Subversive Subjects written by Judith Holland Sarnecki and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subversive Subjects: Reading Marguerite Yourcenar is the first collection of articles in English to deal with many of this very private author's best-known works. Its contributors make use of a variety of literary theories to probe the complex ambiguities at the heart of Yourcenar's writings. Each contributor ventures beyond traditional readings of Yourcenar's complex texts, pushing against the boundaries of interpretation that the Belgian-born writer carefully established. Many of the essays read like a mystery; hence they follow Yourcenar's call for rigorous explications du texte as they probe her complex ouevre. Judith Holland Sarnecki is Associate Professor of French at Lawrence University. Ingeborg Majer O'Sickey is Associate Professor of German and Women's Studies at the State University of New York, Binghamton.

This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alison Holland's study focuses on the writer's frequently neglected novels and short stories, including L'Invitée, Les Mandarins, Les Belles Images, and La Femme rompue. Illuminating the density and rich complexity of Beauvoir's style, Holland demonstrates the extent to which Beauvoir's fiction undermines an ideologically patriarchal position on language. Her re-evaluation of Beauvoir as a fiction writer makes an important contribution to the wider debate on madness and literature.
