Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aeolian Dust and Dust Deposits explores the entrainment, dispersion, and deposition of aeolian dust and dust deposits, with emphasis on transport and deposition of dust derived by deflation of surface sediments and soils. Topics covered range from the mechanisms of fine-particle formation to dust sources, sinks, and rates of deposition. Dust-transporting wind systems are also discussed, along with the grain size, mineralogy, and chemical composition of aeolian dust. Comprised of nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the general nature and significance of windborne dust as well as the importance of aeolian dust and loess. The next chapter deals with the mechanisms underlying the formation of fine particles, including glacial grinding, frost and salt weathering, and fluvial comminution. The reader is then introduced to dust entrainment, transport, and deposition, together with dust sources, sinks, and rates of deposition. Subsequent chapters focus on the implications of dust deflation, transport, and deposition; dust deposition in the oceans; and loess distribution and the thickness and morphology of loess deposits. This monograph is written primarily for research workers and advanced students in sedimentology, geomorphology, and Quaternary studies, but is also likely to be of value to soil scientists, meteorologists, planetary geologists, engineers, and others concerned with environmental management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loess is a product of aeolian deposition during the Quaternary glaciation cycles and covers approximately 6% of the Earth’s land. The Loess Plateau of China, which is home to a population of nearly three hundred million, has the thickest and most complete loess strata, where loess geohazards occur most frequently due to the weak geoenvironment and dense human activities. In recent years, the engineering geological characteristics of loess and geohazards in loess areas have gradually received increasing attention from academic researchers. This book reviews an informative collection of up-to-date literature in this field. It presents the unique features of loess and loess geohazards, and provides a strong foundation for future study via eight systematically structured chapters, e.g., origin and spatial distribution, loess landforms, microstructure, physical properties, permeability, shear strength, tensile strength, and loess geohazard. It can serve as a principal reference for researchers, practical engineers and technicians who are engaged in loess geology and surface processes, and is suitable especially for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of loess engineering geology.

Book excerpt: A revised introduction to aeolian geomorphology written by noted experts in the field The new, revised and updated edition of Aeolian Geomorphology offers a concise and highly accessible introduction to the subject. The text covers the topics of deserts and coastlines, as well as periglacial and planetary landforms. The authors review the range of aeolian characteristics that include soil erosion and its consequences, continental scale dust storms, sand dunes and loess. Aeolian Geomorphology explores the importance of aeolian processes in the past, and the application of knowledge about aeolian geomorphology in environmental management. The new edition includes contributions from eighteen experts from four continents. All the chapters demonstrate huge advances in observation, measurement and mathematical modelling. For example, the chapter on sand seas shows the impact of greatly enhanced and accessible remote sensing and the chapter on active dunes clearly demonstrates the impact of improvements in field techniques. Other examples reveal the power of greatly improved laboratory techniques. This important text: Offers a comprehensive review of aeolian geomorphology Contains contributions from an international panel of eighteen experts in the field Includes the results of the most recent research on the topic Filled with illustrative examples that demonstrate the advances in laboratory approaches Written for students and professionals in the field, Aeolian Geomorphology provides a comprehensive introduction to the topic in twelve new chapters with contributions from noted experts in the field.

Book excerpt: Four roadcuts in the Palouse loess near Washtucna, southeastern Washington, expose a thick sequence of buried calcic soils and tephra layers which span more than the last 730,000 years. The identification of four tephra layers of known age in the upper part of the loess sequence (Mazama, Mt. St. Helens Set S, and two separate layers of Mt. St. Helens Set C) allow the formulation of a soil chronology for the last 40,000 years. Paleomagnetic stratigraphy resulted in the identification of the Brunhes Normal-Matuyama Reversed polarity epoch boundary in one roadcut, thereby establishing an age of at least 730,000 years for the lower part of the loess section. The soils are described in terms of field characteristics and clay mineralogy. Three broad groupings of soils are distinguished on the basis of carbonate stage of development, stratigraphic position, and age: soils younger than about 30,000 years have stage I and II carbonate; soils which formed between 30,000 and at least 40,000 years B.P. have stage III carbonate; and soils which formed prior to at least 40,000 years ago have stage III and IV carbonate. The clay mineral assemblage of the Palouse loess consists of chlorite and mica with minor amounts of smectite, vermiculite and mixed layer clays. The buried soils do not appear to have clay mineral assemblages which can distinguish among them, although three samples from buried soils contained kaolinite. The stratigraphy exposed in the Washtucna roadcuts and the chronology of loess deposition and soil formation developed herein could provide a framework for the Pleistocene chronology of loess deposits on the Columbia Plateau.
