Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lodowick Muggleton (1609-1698) has been fittingly described as the "Prophet of Letters," the Muggletonian church prospering under his leadership with two serious challenges to Muggleton's authority being soundly defeated. Muggleton's control over the movement was largely maintained as a result of the cultivation of his followers through lengthy letters of both a devotional and a practical nature. These letters provide a fascinating insight into both Muggletonianism and the seventeenth century in general This volume contains freshly typeset editions of: "A Volume of Spiritual Epistles," "A Stream from the Tree of Life" and "Supplement to the book of Letters"

This book was released on 1997-05-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mid-seventeenth century saw both the expansion of the Baptist sect and the rise and growth of Quakerism. At first, the Quaker movement attracted some Baptist converts, but relations between the two groups soon grew hostile. Public disputes broke out and each group denounced the other in polemical tracts. Nevertheless in this book, Underwood contends that Quakers and Baptists had much in common with each other, as well as with the broader Puritan and Nonconformist tradition. By examining the Quaker/Baptist relationship in particular, Underwood seeks to understand where and why Quaker views diverged from English Protestantism in general and, in the process, to clarify early Quaker beliefs.

Book excerpt: Following the death of John Reeve in 1658 Lodowick Muggleton faced a revolt against his leadership of the Muggletonian church while at the same time desiring to consolidate the theological developments he sought to make to his predecessors legacy. In this context Lodowick Muggleton's chose an exposition of the eleventh chapter of the book of Revelation for his first solely self attributed work, with the 1662 "A True Interpretation of the Eleventh Chapter of The Revelation of Saint John." Rather surprisingly Muggleton revisited this topic in 1665 with the publication of "A True Interpretation of all the Chief Texts, and Mysterious Sayings and Visions Opened, of the Whole Book of The Revelation of Saint John." This book contains the full texts of both Muggleton's works on the book of Revelation together with the 1894 entry in respect of Lodowick Muggleton from the "Dictionary of National Biography," newly typeset and presented in one volume.
Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Radical Christianity by : William H. Brackney
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Radical Christianity written by William H. Brackney and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several eras in the history of Christianity radical forms of the tradition are obvious: the early church of the first five centuries, the medieval era, the age of reform, the early modern era, and the contemporary era. Radical Christian activity and experience may reflect either a primary or a derived level of spirituality. New converts may join a sect or movement with radical characteristics; or they may become dissatisfied with their initial Christian experiences and desire a different or deeper Christian spirituality, usually closely parallel to that seen in the New Testament. The Historical Dictionary of Radical Christianity covers the history of this movement and includes an introductory essay and a bibliography. The dictionary section has over 400 cross-referenced entries. The dictionary entries selected reflect the leading groups, movements, and sects from each major era of Christian history. Especially in the contemporary period, the great proliferation of radical thinkers and groups has necessitated a selection process with those selected exhibiting sustained group activity, possessing an identifiable following, and demonstrating a significant cultural impact. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Radical Christianity.

Download or read book Last Witnesses written by William Lamont and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On three successive mornings in February 1652, God spoke to a London tailor by the name of John Reeve. Consequently he and his cousin Lodowicke Muggleton believed that they were the Last Two Witnesses prophesied in the Book of Revelation. Over the next six years the pair attracted a small but dedicated band of followers that, following the death of Reeve, became known as the Muggletonians. In this lively and engaging history, the origins of the sect during the religious turmoil and freedoms of the 1650s are described in detail. Their unique theology, beliefs and practices are described and traced throughout the changing circumstances of the centuries. Yet the book offers much more than a history of another puritan sect, for unlike many of their contemporaries, the Muggletonians persisted until the latter years of the twentieth century. Moreover, they preserved a comprehensive archive, rescued from the Blitz by a Kent farmer who transported the papers in empty apple boxes on his way back from market. Discovered by E.P. Thompson in 1974, this archive paints a vivid picture of the Muggletonians from their earliest days until the death of their last member in 1979. By following the history of the Muggletonians from the heady post-civil war days through to the 1970s, this work offers a unique perspective on radical Christian belief and practice, and how it adapted to the changing world around it. More than this, however, it tells the fascinating story of how a small religious group, which eschewed active proselytising and believed in the mortality of the soul, managed to overcome persecution and obscurity, to survive for 320 years.
