Book Synopsis An Introduction to Great Western Locomotive Development by : Jim Champ
Download or read book An Introduction to Great Western Locomotive Development written by Jim Champ and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first thought, when contemplating a new study of the Great Western Railway locomotive fleet, must surely be to ask what can there be left to say? But there is no single source which gives a general introduction to the Great Western locomotive fleet. There are monographs on individual classes, an excellent multi-volume detail study from the RCTS, and superb collections of photographs, but nothing that brings it all together. This work is intended to provide that general introduction. The volume begins with a series of short essays covering general trends in design development, whilst the main body of the volume covers individual classes. For each class there is a small table containing some principal dimensions and paragraphs of text, covering an introduction, renumbering, key changes in the development of the class and information on withdrawal. The volume concludes with appendices covering the development and types of standard boilers, the various numbering schemes used by the GWR, the arcane subject of locomotive diagrams and lot numbers, and a short reference on the many lines the GWR engulfed. The majority of illustrations are new profile drawings to a consistent format. Described as sketches, they are drawn to a consistent scale, but do not claim to be scale drawings. Much minor equipment has been omitted and the author has certainly not dared to include rivets! Although most are based around GWR weight diagrams, they are not simple traces of the original drawings. Detail has been added from other sources, components copied from different drawings and details have been checked against historical and modern photographs. One must also bear in mind that steam locomotives were not mass produced. Minor fittings frequently varied in position and changes were made over the locomotives' lifetimes. Nevertheless, this collection of drawings provides a uniquely consistent view of the GWR locomotive fleet.

Book Synopsis The Willamette Locomotive by : Steve Hauff
Download or read book The Willamette Locomotive written by Steve Hauff and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geared locomotive is important in the history of logging. It mechanized the transport of logs from forest to mill. The Willamette is but a footnote with only 33 ever built. Its impact belies the small number; it brought innovations later copied by the big players: Shay and Heisler. A useful and worthy contribution to the history of rail and logging. Book Synopsis The American Steam Locomotive in the Twentieth Century by : Tom Morrison
Download or read book The American Steam Locomotive in the Twentieth Century written by Tom Morrison and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1900 and 1950, Americans built the most powerful steam locomotives of all time--enormous engines that powered a colossal industry. They were deceptively simple machines, yet, the more their technology was studied, the more obscure it became. Despite immense and sustained engineering efforts, steam locomotives remained grossly inefficient in their use of increasingly costly fuel and labor. In the end, they baffled their masters and, as soon as diesel-electric technology provided an alternative, steam locomotives disappeared from American railroads. Drawing on the work of eminent engineers and railroad managers of the day, this lavishly illustrated history chronicles the challenges, triumphs and failures of American steam locomotive development and operation.

Book Synopsis How a Steam Locomotive Works by : Dominic Wells
Download or read book How a Steam Locomotive Works written by Dominic Wells and published by . This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To address the needs of today's readers, the complex engineering of the steam locomotive is unraveled by use of a large number of easily understandable diagrams, explaining the function of the components in a step-by-step manner. There is no technical knowledge required on the part of the reader, nor is there any requirement to understand engineering drawings, because the diagrams and explanations are carefully approached. Nevertheless, the book should also appeal to the technically minded. Starting with a basic introduction to the principle of the steam locomotive boiler, the book goes on to provide explanations of both coal and oil firing. Further detailed chapters cover all the essential components, including gauge glasses, injectors, control valves, mainframes, cylinders, valve gears, lubrication, air brakes, vacuum brakes, auxiliaries and cab layouts.
