Book excerpt: Loch Lomond has long held a special place in the hearts of all the people of Scotland not only for its historic significance but also for the beauty of its countryside. Less widely known is the ecological importance of the area. It is the largest stretch of freshwater in Britain and the only loch to be crossed by the Highland Boundary Fault, one of the country's most important geological features. The University of Glasgow has recognized the importance of this loch situated so near the main campus and has operated a field station on its shores since 1948. In the mid-1960s the field station was re-established at Rowardennan as an all-year-round facility with laboratory and living accommodation for resident research workers and visiting field courses. In 1992 a symposium was held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the new station and this volume presents the proceedings of that symposium and gives the state of the present knowledge of Loch Lomond. After an introduction to Loch Lomond, the papers are divided into three sections. Section I: The physical and chemical environment of Loch Lomond and its catchment. Section II: The biology and ecology of Loch Lomond and its catchment, and Section III: Issues affecting Loch Lomond and its catchment.

Book excerpt: This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The main advantages of this map are the geographical design of the sheetlines to capture the best local coverage, and the coverage of a larger area for value for money. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guidebook to over 70 walking routes in the hills of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The routes range from 1 to 17 miles, and are clearly graded for distance and difficulty, as well as dividing between low-level, mid-level and mountain walks. Each of the area's 21 Munros are included, as well as plenty of Corbetts and Grahams. From short, loch-side strolls suitable for all walkers, to long, challenging mountain routes with rocky scrambling, including all three peaks of the Cobbler, the Loch Lomond and Trossachs hills have plenty to offer. The walks in this guide are divided into areas: the Trossachs, Callander and Loch Lubnaig, Balquhidder and Lochearnhead, Crianlarich to Inveraran, Tyndrum, Ben Lomond, Loch Lomond West, Arrochar Alps and Glen Croe to Loch Goil. This guidebook includes plenty of background information on the area, practical information on getting to and around the region's walks, advice on accommodation, what equipment to take, when to go, as well as interesting details on the schist rock that makes the hills, and important information on access in the hills and on Scottish estates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The walks in this guide introduce the many facets of the Southern Highlands and range from easy loch-side strolls to strenuous expeditions onto some of the area's highest mountains. Walking in Scotland is quite different from walking south of the border. In England there are only eight summits that top 3000 ft, while in Scotland there are 277, with 45 of them situated in the Southern Highlands. Walks taking in the mountains of the National Park include Beinn Dubh, Ben Vorlich, The Cobbler, Ben Ledi, Ben Lomond and Ben Venue. The Trossachs are particularly spectacular when clothed in autumn colours and provided the setting for The Lady of the Lake and Rob Roy, by Sir Walter Scott. The Ochil Hills, Loch Lomond and the West Highland Way are also included, and there is an opportunity to see Stirling and the Wallace monument, overlooking the scene of the Scottish patriot's victory over Edward I.

This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Corbetts (Scotland's 2500-2999ft mountains) are every bit as interesting as the Munros (3000ft and over), often clear when the Munros are in cloud, walkable on short winter days and free of the peak-bagging crowds of their taller neighbours. Walking the Corbetts is divided into two volumes. This guide covers the Corbetts to the south of the Great Glen, which runs from Fort William to Inverness and includes the Southern Uplands, Southern Highlands, Cairngorms and also the islands of Arran and Jura. Choosing the best, rather than the quickest routes up each summit the author covers 112 Corbetts described in 95 routes, illustrated with custom 1:100,000 mapping. South of Glasgow and Edinburgh are the moorland hills of the Southern Uplands, where seven peaks rise to Corbett status. In the Southern Highlands plenty of interesting Corbetts provide spectacular views of the Munros with easy access from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The Corbetts of the Eastern Highlands and the Monadhliath Mountains sit in sprawling heather plateaus, ideal for those seeking solitude. The South-West Highlands is known for its rocky peaks in places like Glen Coe and the highlights are probably Arran and Jura, with their similarly rocky and isolated summits.
