Book excerpt: In this book, locational preferences of firms in The Netherlands and Germany are studied from a behavioural point of view. Stated preferences of entrepreneurs in each country are examined, using various types of statistical analysis. The influence of both firm and place characteristics is analysed. Special attention is given to the relation between distance and rating. Other topics mentioned are changes in the rating patterns in time, the relation of locational preferences with other types of spatial preferences and with locational behaviour. The results of the analyses may be regarded as relevant to behavioural theory as well as to the practice of government policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is property located where it is and how has this process changed in recent years? A number of factors such as social change and technological development, have affected location and these are considered. Value, the way changing patterns are measured, is examined and there is a discussion of rent contours. The book considers location in the retail industry, looking at the theory, hierarchy, clustering and dispersal. The move to out of town sites, with its three waves of decentralisation, is described. Central place theory, dating from the 1930s, is discounted as being obsolete and misleading. Finally the book covers offices, industrial and residential property.

Book excerpt: The acquisition and management of information is central to the operation and marketing of many service-providing firms and other organizations. Their varied knowledge requirements influence approaches to organizational structure, relationships to other organizations, the location of operations, and entry into new markets. In this book, an international and interdisciplinary team of leading scholars examines the attributes of knowledge acquisition and diffusion within and across service-providing organizations. Using a variety of case examples, they pay particular attention to the processes of internationalization and the ways in which service-providing organizations affect regional economic development.

Book excerpt: The service sector in most advanced economies accounts for up to seventy percent of employment and GDP and, given its growing importance, has received much research attention over the last two decades. However, not very much attention has been paid to the relationship between this sector and both its territorial impact and regional effects. The main objective of this book is to offer a comprehensive approach to these aspects, focusing particularly on the location factors of service industries and the importance of some specific services, such as business services and knowledge and information services. The contributions have been prepared by well-known experts in the field from a wide number of countries. The focus of all contributions is not only on theoretical aspects, but also provides empirical analyses on specific countries and topics such as the geographical concentration, globalization impacts, foreign direct investments, and innovation.

Foreign observers will need little convincing of the merits of Dutch planning. They will want to know whether routine explanations (small country, industrious, disciplined people hardened by the perennial fight against the sea) hold any water, and they will want to know where to look for the bag of tricks of Dutch planners. Dutch readers need to be convinced first that planning in the Netherlands is indeed effective before contemplating how this has come about. Our message for both is that, to the extent that Dutch planners do live in what others are inclined to see as a planners' paradise, it is a paradise carefully constructed and maintained by the planners themselves. This smacks of Bernard Shaw describing a profession as a conspiracy against laity. However, all knowledge and all technologies are 'socially constructed', meaning that they are the products of people or groups pursuing often conflicting aims and coming to arrangements about what is to pass as 'true' and 'good'. So this takes away the odium of Dutch planners having their own agenda. Positioning ourselves We are in the business of interpreting Dutch planning, and at the same time committed to improving it. This makes us part of the situation which we describe. This situation is characterized by the existence of two divergent traditions, urban design and the social-science discipline called 'planologie'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of this successful handbook represents varied perspectives on the fast-expanding field of Service Science. The novel work collected in these chapters is drawn from both new researchers who have grown-up with Service Science, as well as established researchers who are adapting their frames for the modern service context. The first Handbook of Service Science marked the emergence of Service Science when disciplinary studies of business-to-customer service systems intertwined to meet the needs of a new era of business-to-business and global service ecosystems. Today, the evolving discipline of Service Science involves advanced technologies, such as smartphones, cloud, social platforms, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence. These technologies are reshaping the service landscape, transforming both business models and public policy, ranging from retail and hospitality to transportation and communications. By looking through the eyes of today’s new Service Scientists, it is anticipated that value and grand challenges will emerge from the integration of theories, methods, and techniques brought together in the first volume, but which are now rooted more deeply in service-dominant logic and systems thinking in this second volume. The handbook is divided into four parts: 1) Service Experience--On the Human-centered Nature of Service; 2) Service Systems–On the Nature of Service Interactions; 3) Service Ecosystems–On the Broad Context of Service; 4) Challenges–On Rethinking the Theory and Foundations of Service Science. The chapters add clarity on how to identify, enable, and measure service, thus allowing for new ideas and connections made to physics, design, computer science, and data science and analytics for advancing service innovation and the welfare of society. Handbook of Service Science, Volume II offers a thorough reference suitable for a wide-reaching audience including researchers, practitioners, managers, and students who aspire to learn about or to create a deeper scientific foundation for service design and engineering, service experience and marketing, and service management and innovation.
