Book excerpt: A technique for interpreting Time Domain Electromagnetic (TEM) Data was proposed in "Detecting Unexploded Ordnance with Time Domain Electromagnetic Induction" (Pasion, 1999). An approximate forward modeling for the TEM response of compact metallic objects, an inversion for recovering model parameters, and relationships between model parameters and a target's physical parameters were established. These findings were combined to form an algorithm for locating and determining the approximate shape of a buried target

Book excerpt: As a result of past military training and weapons-testing activities, an estimated 6 million hectares (approximately 15 million acres) of U.S. land is potentially contaminated with unexploded ordnance (UXO) and/or weapons testing- and training-related artifacts. Using current technologies, the costs associated with detection, identification, and mapping of this contamination has been estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars. Current surface-based technologies are generally labor-intensive, slow, and expensive. The Oak Ridge Airborne Geophysical System time-domain electromagnetic (ORAGS-TEM) system is a boom-mounted EM induction system designed for mounting on rigid Kevlar and carbon fiber booms attached to the underside of a Bell 206L Long Ranger helicopter. Rigid booms allow the helicopter to fly closer to the ground, increasing system resolution and permitting precise control of receiver positions, thus allowing more accurate determination of UXO locations. The airborne system is based on a single transmitter coil and two receiver coils mounted on a rigid 12m x 3m rectangular boom structure. Ancillary equipment includes a laser altimeter and a real-time differentially corrected global positioning system (GPS) for navigation and data positioning. This configuration enables operation at a nominal flight altitude of 1 to 3 meters above ground level (AGL). The survey methodology used for this report consisted of parallel lines traversing the areas of interest so that data were collected for each flight line at nominal data spacing. The survey process concludes with data processing, analysis, interpretation, and mapping using commercial software to generate digital images depicting locations and magnitudes of anomalies that may represent UXO.

Book excerpt: Remediation of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and prioritization of excavation procedures for archaeological artifacts using electromagnetic (EM) induction are studied in this dissertation. Lowering of the false alarm rates that require excavation and artifact excavation prioritization can reduce the costs associated with unnecessary procedures. Data were taken over 5 areas at the San Jacinto Battleground near Houston, Texas, using an EM-63 metal detection instrument. The areas were selected using the archaeological concepts of cultural and natural formation processes applied to what is thought to be areas that were involved in the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto. Innovative use of a Statistical Point Pattern Analysis (PPA) is employed to identify clustering of EM anomalies. The K-function uses point {x, y} data to look for possible clusters in relation to other points in the data set. The clusters once identified using K-function will be further examined for classification and prioritization using the Weighted K-function. The Weighted K-function uses a third variable such as millivolt values or time decay to aid in segregation and prioritization of anomalies present. Once the anomalies of interest are identified, their locations are determined using the Gi-Statistics Technique. The Gi*-Statistic uses the individual Cartesian{x, y} points as origin locations to establish a range of distances to other cluster points in the data set. The segregation and location of anomalies supplied by this analysis will have several benefits. Prioritization of excavations will narrow down what areas should be excavated first. Anomalies of interest can be located to guide excavation procedures within the areas surveyed. Knowing what anomalies are of greater importance than others will help to lower false alarm rates for UXO remediation or for archaeological artifact selection. Knowing significant anomaly location will reduce the number of excavations which will subsequently save time and money. The procedures and analyses presented here are an interdisciplinary compilation of geophysics, archaeology and statistical analysis brought together for the first time to examine problems associated with UXO remediation as well as archaeological artifact selection at historic battlegrounds using electromagnetic data.

Book excerpt: Unexploded ordnance (UXO) is a worldwide problem, which causes deaths and injuries to people living in post-conflict areas. It also prevents former military training sites from being returned to civilian use before they are properly cleaned. UXO cleaning is both dangerous and expensive. Metal detectors are the most common method used in UXO detection since reliable explosive detecting methods are not available at the current stage. Traditional metal detectors are unable to distinguish between targets of interest (TOI) and non-harzardous metallic clutter. As a result, UXO clean up could end up with about 95% of the digging to be clutter. To overcome this problem, new generation electromagnetic induction systems have recently been developed for subsurface target detection and classification. One of such system is the Time-Domain Electromagnetic Multisensor Towed Array Detection System (TEMTADS), which provides high fidelity EM data for target classification. UXO classification consists of three main steps: 1: Data collection; 2: Data inversion and target parameter extraction; 3: Target discrimination. In this thesis we present TEMTADS data sets inversion and processing approaches for cued (static) and dynamic (moving) measurements. Instead of using traditional matrix inversion and iterative search methods to tackle the highly non-linear problem of target locating, we employ the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm for fast and accurate estimation of target locations. The MUSIC algorithm is based on the orthogonality between the signal and noise subspaces in the multi static response (MSR) matrix of targets. In general, to identify the boundary between the two subspaces for actual data is a difficult task. To overcome this, joint-diagonalization (JD) is integrated into the processing. Namely, we use JD to estimate the number of sources presenting in a data set and to improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The entire process is automated. Studies are done for test stand and blind data sets. Our results showed that the combined JD-MUSIC algorithm can be used to estimate target locations in near real time. The JD algorithm and Orthonormalized Volume Magnetic Source (ONVMS) model is extended for dynamic TEMTADS anomaly mapping and target picking. The algorithms were tested on data sets collected at live UXO sites in Camp Hale, Colorado. The study shows that JD and ONVMS provide underground target picking and preliminary classification capabilities, if clear background data can be provided. Comparison of inverted parameters between cued and dynamic data suggests that dynamic data can provide generally same value as cued data for classification purpose under good SNR conditions, thus the number of cued measurements needed can be reduced.

Book excerpt: This report describes a set of field tests conducted at Badlands Bombing Range (BBR) in South Dakota in September 2002. The primary goal of the field tests was to evaluate parameters critical to the design of an airborne electromagnetic system capable of detecting a variety of buried ordnance. The resulting system, called ORAGS-TEM, was patterned after the low-flying helicopter magnetic systems under development at ORNL through separate SERDP/ESTCP programs. Thus, the ORAGS-TEM has a frame mounted, multiple sensor design that permits helicopter surveys at altitudes as low as one meter over UXO-contaminated terrain. As with the magnetic systems, GPS and laser altimetry provide precise positioning to within a few tens of centimeters.
