Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains seven refereed research papers on locally compact quantum groups and groupoids by leading experts in the respective fields. These contributions are based on talks presented on the occasion of the meeting between mathematicians and theoretical physicists held in Strasbourg from February 21 to February 23, 2002. Topics covered are: various constructions of locally compact quantum groups and their multiplicative unitaries; duality theory for locally compact quantum groups; combinatorial quantization of flat connections associated with SL(2,c); quantum groupoids, especially coming from Depth 2 Extensions of von Neumann algebras, C*-algebras and Rings. Many mathematical results are motivated by problems in theoretical physics. Historical remarks set the results presented in perspective. Directed at research mathematicians and theoretical physicists as well as graduate students, the volume will give an overview of a field of research in which great progress has been achieved in the last few years, with new ties to many other areas of mathematics and physics.

Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the theory of quantum groups with emphasis on their duality and on the setting of operator algebras. Part I of the text presents the basic theory of Hopf algebras, Van Daele's duality theory of algebraic quantum groups, and Woronowicz's compact quantum groups, staying in a purely algebraic setting. Part II focuses on quantum groups in the setting of operator algebras. Woronowicz's compact quantum groups are treated in the setting of $C^*$-algebras, and the fundamental multiplicative unitaries of Baaj and Skandalis are studied in detail. An outline of Kustermans' and Vaes' comprehensive theory of locally compact quantum groups completes this part. Part III leads to selected topics, such as coactions, Baaj-Skandalis-duality, and approaches to quantum groupoids in the setting of operator algebras. The book is addressed to graduate students and non-experts from other fields. Only basic knowledge of (multi-) linear algebra is required for the first part, while the second and third part assume some familiarity with Hilbert spaces, $C^*$-algebras, and von Neumann algebras.

Book excerpt: This dissertation deals with the notion of monoidal equivalence of locally compact quantum groups and its applications. We generalize to the case of regular locally compact quantum groups, two important resultst concerning the actions of compact quantum groups. Let G1 and G2 be two regular locally compact quantum groups monoidally equivalent. We develop an induction procedure and we build an equivalence of the categories, whose objects are the continuous actions of G1 and G2 on C*-algebras. As an application of this result, we obtain a canonical equivalence of the categories of equivariant KK-theory for actions of G1 and G2. We introduce and investigate a notion of actions on C*-algebras of mesured quantum groupoids on a finite basis. The proof of the second equivalence relies on a version of the Takesaki-Takai duality theorem for continuous actions of measured quantum groupoids on a finite basis. We conclude by defining and studying a notion of equivariant Hilbert modules for actions of mesured quantum groupoids on a finite basis.

Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough introduction to the theory of complex semisimple quantum groups, that is, Drinfeld doubles of q-deformations of compact semisimple Lie groups. The presentation is comprehensive, beginning with background information on Hopf algebras, and ending with the classification of admissible representations of the q-deformation of a complex semisimple Lie group. The main components are: - a thorough introduction to quantized universal enveloping algebras over general base fields and generic deformation parameters, including finite dimensional representation theory, the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem, the locally finite part, and the Harish-Chandra homomorphism, - the analytic theory of quantized complex semisimple Lie groups in terms of quantized algebras of functions and their duals, - algebraic representation theory in terms of category O, and - analytic representation theory of quantized complex semisimple groups. Given its scope, the book will be a valuable resource for both graduate students and researchers in the area of quantum groups.

Book excerpt: One of the most enduring elements in theoretical physics has been group theory. GROUP 24: Physical and Mathematical Aspects of Symmetries provides an important selection of informative articles describing recent advances in the field. The applications of group theory presented in this book deal not only with the traditional fields of physics, but also include such disciplines as chemistry and biology. Awarded the Wigner Medal and the Weyl Prize, respectively, H.J. Lipkin and E. Frenkel begin the volume with their contributions. Plenary session contributions are represented by 18 longer articles, followed by nearly 200 shorter articles. The book also presents coherent states, wavelets, and applications and quantum group theory and integrable systems in two separate sections. As a record of an international meeting devoted to the physical and mathematical aspects of group theory, GROUP 24: Physical and Mathematical Aspects of Symmetries constitutes an essential reference for all researchers interested in various current developments related to the important concept of symmetry.

Book excerpt: Luis Santalo Winter Schools are organized yearly by the Mathematics Department and the Santalo Mathematical Research Institute of the School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires (FCEN). This volume contains the proceedings of the third Luis Santalo Winter School which was devoted to noncommutative geometry and held at FCEN July 26-August 6, 2010. Topics in this volume concern noncommutative geometry in a broad sense, encompassing various mathematical and physical theories that incorporate geometric ideas to the study of noncommutative phenomena. It explores connections with several areas including algebra, analysis, geometry, topology and mathematical physics. Bursztyn and Waldmann discuss the classification of star products of Poisson structures up to Morita equivalence. Tsygan explains the connections between Kontsevich's formality theorem, noncommutative calculus, operads and index theory. Hoefel presents a concrete elementary construction in operad theory. Meyer introduces the subject of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic crossed products. Rosenberg introduces Kasparov's $KK$-theory and noncommutative tori and includes a discussion of the Baum-Connes conjecture for $K$-theory of crossed products, among other topics. Lafont, Ortiz, and Sanchez-Garcia carry out a concrete computation in connection with the Baum-Connes conjecture. Zuk presents some remarkable groups produced by finite automata. Mesland discusses spectral triples and the Kasparov product in $KK$-theory. Trinchero explores the connections between Connes' noncommutative geometry and quantum field theory. Karoubi demonstrates a construction of twisted $K$-theory by means of twisted bundles. Tabuada surveys the theory of noncommutative motives.

Book excerpt: This volume presents a completely self-contained introduction to the elaborate theory of locally compact quantum groups, bringing the reader to the frontiers of present-day research. The exposition includes a substantial amount of material on functional analysis and operator algebras, subjects which in themselves have become increasingly important with the advent of quantum information theory. In particular, the rather unfamiliar modular theory of weights plays a crucial role in the theory, due to the presence of Haar integrals on locally compact quantum groups, and is thus treated quite extensively The topics covered are developed independently, and each can serve either as a separate course in its own right or as part of a broader course on locally compact quantum groups. The second part of the book covers crossed products of coactions, their relation to subfactors and other types of natural products such as cocycle bicrossed products, quantum doubles and doublecrossed products. Induced corepresentations, Galois objects and deformations of coactions by cocycles are also treated. Each section is followed by a generous supply of exercises. To complete the book, an appendix is provided on topology, measure theory and complex function theory.

Beginning with the basics, the theory is developed through such topics as tensor products, nuclearity and exactness, crossed products, K-theory, and quasidiagonality. The presentation carefully and precisely explains the main features of each part of the theory of operator algebras; most important arguments are at least outlined and many are presented in full detail.
