Research aims were to detect evidence of dispersal based on the distance and direction between red- and green-attacked tree clusters, determine how dispersal patterns change at different stages of infestation, and to detect landscape variables influencing the observed dispersal patterns. Book excerpt: Understanding forest age class dynamics is important in managing forests within the distribution of the mountain pine beetle, since these insects attack mature pine stands. The assumed theoretical negative exponential forest age distribution provides an estimate when ecosystem dynamics are at equilibrium. This study investigates the dynamics of forest age distribution for non-equilibrium ecosystem dynamics, which result primarily from large & irregular stand-replacement fire disturbances that alter the forest age distribution. A model experiment using the SEM-LAND model on a one million hectare lodgepole pine forest landscape was conducted to estimate how the proportion of beetle-susceptible area could be influenced by different fire regimes. The results indicate the complexity of the temporal dynamics of the area susceptible to attack and the dependence of those dynamics on the fire history of the area studied. The effect of the age range of the susceptible pine stands on the estimated area susceptible to attack is also discussed.
