Book excerpt: During the last two decades, progress in steroid hormone research has resulted in the development of new approaches to contraception as well as diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders and cancers. Although significant advances have been made in the purification, characterization, immunochemistry and molecular biology of steroid receptors, the precise molecular mechanism of steroid hormone action has remained obscure. This book captures the detailed presentations made at the first conference on Steroid Receptors in Health and Disease held at Meadow Brook Hall, Oakland University in the fall of 1987. The purpose of this international con ference was to facilitate scientific exchange toward a better understand ing of the mode of action of steroid hormones. The scientific sessions consisted of poster presentations and state-of-the-art lectures, the latter of which make up this volume. The first chapter is meant to provide the reader with a more general background of the topics covered in the book, as well as to discuss certain theme-related issues that are either not yet well-established or accepted or are in the stage of infancy. It is hoped that this volume will serve as a useful treatise for students and investigators interested in basic and clinical aspects of biological regulation by steroid hormones. A task of this magnitude could not have been undertaken without the encouragement, advice and continued generous assistance of the members of the scientific committee. I am gratefully indebted to Drs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of the literature on steroid hormone receptor immuncytochemistry. It includes the development of the first monoclonal antireceptor antibody and initial procedures designed to localize steroid receptors in situ up to the present. The step-by-step instructions provide easy reading of topics such as tissue handling, processing, and interpretation. This text places particular emphasis on the studies of human material-especially mammary carcinoma. It presents specific details with chapters on estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast malignancies and benign breast disease. Each section of this outstanding book contains comprehensive photomicrographs that illustrate the most salient features discussed. Detailed graphs pertaining to theoretical particulars concerning technology and the relationship between image analysis and endocrine response are also included. This monograph is an excellent resource for all researchers concerned with hormone-dependent tissues, pathologists who have an interest in working with novel techniques for localizing steroid hormone receptors, and oncologists who must use assay results in the treatment of breast cancer.

Book excerpt: Society The Third Symposium of the International held in against Breast Cancer CONTRA CANCRUM MAMMARIUM was Paris, at UNESCO, on December 9-12, 1985. Scientists and physicians came from allover the world to attend this meeting. They came from Japan, Brazil, the United States and the Middle East, from Belgium, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, and from allover France. They all contributed to the success of the Symposium and my cordial thanks go to all of them and particularly to the invited speakers and chairmen of the sessions, to the free-paper contributors, and to the contributors to the Slide Seminar. Warm personal thanks go to two friends: to Professor Dan H. Moore from Hahnemann University, Philadelphia, who was always there to help in many ways, and to Professor Pietro Gullino from the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, and now Torino, Italy, who consistently gave invaluable advice. Special thanks are also due to those who assisted in the preparation and organization of the Symposium: the UNESCO officers, the interpreters, the secretaries and hostesses, the BEBA Company with the help of Dr.Bernard Martin and Mrs.Jacqueline Bouchy, the WILD LEITZ-France S.A. for projection facilities and microscope arrangements for the workshop on mammary cytology which was successfully conducted by Dr.Colette Marsan. During the four days, three main topics were discussed: ~ E~idemiology, genetiCS and oncogenes, related subjects of great actuality.

Book excerpt: General Description of Volume:Volume 51 includes reviews papers on cyclic AMP, kinases, polypeptide hormones, steroid hormone receptors, related genes, and members of the gene family. General Description of Series:Under the capable and qualified editorial leadership of Dr. Gerald Litwack, Vitamins and Hormones continues to publish up-to-date synthetic reviews of interest to endocrinologists and biochemists. Others interested in the structure and function of biologically active molecules like hormones and vitamins will, as always, turn to this series for comprehensive reviews by leading contributors to this and related disciplines.First published in 1943, Vitamins and Hormones is the longest-running serial published by Academic Press. In the early days of the serial, the subjects of vitamins and hormones were quite distinct. Now, new discoveries have proved that several of the vitamins function as hormones and many of the substances inferred by the title of the Serial function in signal transduction processes. Accordingly, the editor-in-chief has expanded the scope of the serial to reflect this newer understanding of function-structure relationships in cellular communication. The newly modified editorial board now reflects expertise in the field of hormone action, vitamin action, X-ray crystal structure, physiology and enzyme mechanisms. Vitamins and Hormones continues to publish up-to-date synthetic reviews of interest to endocrinologists and biochemists. Others will increasingly turn to this series for comprehensive reviews by leading researchers in this and related disciplines.

Book excerpt: The sixth edition of this highly popular text retains its comprehensive coverage of endocrine basics from previous editions while featuring entirely new chapters on several topics, including the assessment of endocrine function, sexual differentiation, growth regulation, the thyroid, the adrenals, and calcium homeostasis. Chapters have been updated and reorganized to make information easily accessible in concise form, and new figures and tables have been added to enhance the presentation of complex concepts. Fundamental principles of endocrine physiology are reinforced with illustrative examples from clinical observation and the limitations of current knowledge are properly identified. The ideal resource for students entering the field, the Textbook of Endocrine Physiology aims to provide for all a solid basis in fundamentals of endocrinology and for some, inspiration for the pursuit of advanced medical or graduate studies in the field.
