Popular methods are: received-signal-strength (RSS); time-of-arrival (TOA); time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA); and angle-of-arrival (AOA). Estimation is based on nonlinear equations constructed from measurements and knowledge of the anchor node geometry. In this thesis, anchor-based line-of-sight TOA and AOA are reviewed, and new techniques, namely DAOA (differential-angle-of-arrival) and hybrid TOA/DAOA are proposed for rotating laser implementation. For the TOA approach, a nonlinear Least Square Estimator (LSE) is applied to one- and two-dimensional systems, then the equations are linearized and solved by unconstrained/constrained LSE. This LSE procedure is also used for AOA. For DAOA, all the anchors are placed on a circle in order to simplify the solution, and then LSE is used to estimate an unlocalized node. The statistical accuracy of these methods, from simulation, is presented graphically for simple read-and-use application.

Sensors are often randomly deployed and in such case, determining each sensor's position is critical, which explains the recent attention given to the sensor localization problem. Previous methods of projection onto convex sets (POCS) overcome the multimodality problem that plagues earlier least-squares formulations. Previous efforts in this direction require that the sensor be located in certain position in the plane. Here we propose a new algorithm which projects onto the boundary of convex sets, and features a computationally simple update procedure. The new algorithm has a unique solution no matter where the sensor is located at. Simulation results will be shown and conclusions would be given. Sensor localization typically exploits distance measurements to infer sensor positions with respect to known anchor nodes. Missing or unreliable measurements for special nodes can impede such procedures, raising the problem of distance measurement reconstruction using distance information from other nodes. The problem has traditionally been approached through multidimensional scaling, and more recently through semidenite programming and low-rank matrix completion. Here we develop new iterative reconstruction algorithms which instead exploit inertia of key matrices, thereby encompassing stronger constraints than rank alone. This serves to overcome limitations observed in earlier competitive approaches which do not exploit the problem structure as well. Simulation examples illustrate the performance of the new algorithms.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks submitted by King-Yip Cheng for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong December 2006 Localization in wireless sensor networks is the process of determining the geographical positions of sensors. Only some of the sensors (anchors) in the networks have prior knowledge about their geo- graphical positions. Localization algorithms use the location information of anchors and estimates of distances between neighbouring nodes to determine the positions of the rest of the sensors. In this work, modifications to Ad Hoc Positioning System (APS) [7] [8] are proposed to im- prove its performance in anisotropic networks. Only selected anchors instead of all anchors are included in the multilateration process. The nearest three anchors that form a convex hull embed- ding the sensor are used to localize the sensor. A heuristic-based Convex Hull Detection Method (CHDM) is used to detect whether the anchors form a convex hull embedding the sensor. Simula- tion results suggest that the modifications are considerably more accurate in anisotropic networks than the original APS. The CHDM is also applicable to localization systems based on proximity- distance map (PDM) [20]. The effects of the number and placement of anchors are also investigated. The performance of a PDM-based localization system is severely degraded if anchors are clustered together. A phased approach, MDS+CHDM, is proposed to alleviate the degradation. In the first phase, MDS- MAP [11] is used to localize some nodes in the network as it shows less dependence on the numberand placement of anchors. The localized nodes then become secondary anchors. The rest of the sensors are localized by PDM in the second phase. The phased approach is tested by extensive simulations. Book excerpt: A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is formed of low-cost, low-power, multifunctional, tiny sensor nodes that scattered in one area and can collect physical information, process and forward them to sink nodes which act as data collectors. Sensors exhibit self-configuring and self-organizing capabilities and can be deployed densely and randomly without predetermining their positions. Localization has been a major challenge in wireless sensor networks because without finding the position of the sensor that is reporting sensed data, the data reported will not be useful. However, most of the previous localization approaches demand that sensors have plenty of resources like power, memory, or extra hardware used for ranging. In this thesis we propose a new Hybrid Distance Vector based localization algorithm, referred to as HDV-Hop, that accurately localizes sensors while minimizing their power consumption and memory requirements, and without depending on any extra hardware. HDV-Hop splits the task of localization between sensor nodes and the base station (i.e., sink). Moreover, the proposed algorithm does not necessitate the presence of many nodes with preconfigured positions, or anchor nodes. In HDV-Hop, anchors are placed in a circle or a semi-circle around the perimeter of the WSN. Not only this placement strategy leads to more accurate localization, but also it is very convenient for WSNs used for environment monitoring or military surveillance or tracking applications. Using NS-2 and MATLAB simulations, we have shown that the proposed HDV-Hop outperforms other peer approaches in terms of localization accuracy and power efficiency.

Book excerpt: Classical position estimation techniques assume direct connectivity between a node with unknown coordinates and a certain amount of access points or landmarks. Position Estimation in Ad-Hoc Wireless Sensor Networks cannot be solved by using single hop algorithms because the node of interest may not be within the coverage area of the landmarks disabling any possibility of estimating the node s coordinates. This work is devoted to study localized multihop algorithms and to show the advantages and disadvantages of them. The work is primarily focused on an old navigational technique called Dead Reckoning whose estimations are based on ranging and angular measurements along a defined path between a given access point and the node of interest. It is the purpose of this thesis work to highlight every advantage offered by this localized algorithm over a family of localized algorithms known as Distance Vector algorithms.
