Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic technology is developing rapidly and, with it, the problems associated with the cooling of microelectronic equipment are becoming increasingly complex. So much so that it is necessary for experts in the fluid and thermal sciences to become involved with the cooling problem. Such thoughts as these led to an approach to leading specialists with a request to contribute to the present book. Cooling of Electronic Systems presents the technical progress achieved in the fundamentals of the thermal management of electronic systems and thermal strategies for the design of microelectronic equipment. The book starts with an introduction to the cooling of electronic systems, involving such topics as trends in computer system cooling, the cooling of high performance computers, thermal design of microelectronic components, natural and forced convection cooling, cooling by impinging air and liquid jets, thermal control systems for high speed computers, together with a detailed review of advances in manufacturing and assembly technology. Following this, practical methods for the determination of the parameters required for the thermal analysis of electronic systems and the accurate prediction of temperature in consumer electronics. Cooling of Electronic Systems is currently the most up-to-date book on the thermal management of electronic and microelectronic equipment, and the subject is presented by eminent scientists and experts in the field. Vital reading for all designers of modern, high-speed computers.

Book excerpt: Due to the requirement for enhanced cooling technologies on modern gas turbine engines, advanced research and development has had to take place in field of thermal engineering. Among the gas turbine cooling technologies, impingement jet cooling is one of the most effective in terms of cooling effectiveness, manufacturability and cost. The chapters contained in this book describe research on state-of-the-art and advanced cooling technologies that have been developed, or that are being researched, with a variety of approaches from theoretical, experimental, and CFD studies. The authors of the chapters have been selected from some of the most active researchers and scientists on the subject. This is the first to book published on the topics of gas turbines and heat transfer to focus on impingement cooling alone.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was made of the local heat-transfer characteristics of air jets impinging on the concave side of a right circular semicylinder. A correlation was developed for expressing individual and combined effects of a number of dimensionless variables on the normalized Nusselt number distributions. Results of the present study are in good agreement with those of other investigators.

Book excerpt: This study expands upon the current knowledge of the relationship between the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of air-assisted water impingement jets. Fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of air-assisted water jet impingement were experimentally investigated under a fixed water flow rate condition with varying relative height (H/d). The test fluids were water and air. The effects of nozzle-to-plate spacing at volumetric qualities [beta]=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.8 where [beta] is the ratio of the volume of air to the total volume of the two-phase mixture on the hydraulic jump diameter, stagnation pressure, and stagnation Nusselt number were considered. The results showed that stagnation Nusselt number, hydraulic jump diameter, and stagnation pressure increased as the relative height decreased and the volumetric quality increased with the maximum values occurring at H/d of 0.02 and a volumetric quality of 0.8. This research is most applicable in the use of cooling of industrial applications such as cooling of electronics and processing of materials.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary layer methods are used to find the heat transfer rate caused by a two-dimensional jet impinging on the inside surface of a semi-cylinder. Because of a wider pressure distribution on the semi-cylinder, the solution predicts a delayed transition from a laminar to a turbulent boundary layer. This delayed transition causes the average heat transfer from the semi-cylinder to be less than the average heat transfer from the flat plate. Experimental data support the theoretically predicted heat transfer rate from the stagnation area of the semi-cylindrical plate and indicate heat transfer rates that are less than those predicted by theory in the other regions of the flow field.
