Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be based on the material of the lecture noties in several International Schools for the Determination and Use of the Geoid, organized by the International Geoid Serivice of the International Association of Geodesy. It consolidates, unifies, and streamlines this material in a unique way not covereed by the few other books that exist on this subjext. More specifically, the book presents (for the first time in a single volume) the theory and methodology of the most common technique used for precise determination of the geoid, including the computation of the marine geoid from satellite altimetry data. These are illustrated by specific examples and actual computations of local geoids. In addition, the book provides the fundamentals of estimating orthometric heights without spirit levelling, by properly combining a geoid with heights from GPS. Besides the geodectic and geophysical uses, this last application has made geoid computation methods very popular in recent years because the entire GPS and GIS user communities are interested in estimating geoid undulations in order to convert GPS heights to physically meaningful orthometric heights (elevations above mean sea level). The overall purpose of the book is, therefore, to provide the user community (academics, graduate students, geophysicists, engineers, oceanographers, GIS and GPS users, researchers) with a self-contained textbook, which will supply them with the complete roadmap of estimating geoid undulations, from the theoretical definitions and formulas to the available numerical methods and their implementation and the test in practice.

Book excerpt: Rapid growth of geodetic information provided by the Global Positioning System (GPS) and stringent requirements for a precise geoid in ocean areas for ocean circulation models have spurred interest in geoid studies. As a result, the International Geoid Commission was formed to provide a focus for this important geoid research. Determination of the Geoid: Present and Future is the result of the first meeting of the Commission, held at the Instituto di Topografia, Fotogrammetria e Geofisica at the Politecnico di Milano, June 1990. Six major topics are presented: Global Geopotential Models: Present and Future; Role of Topography in Geoid Computations; the Geoid and the Global Positioning System; the State of Computation of National or Regional Geoids; Software and Data Improvements for Geoid Computations; and Recent Developments in the GEOMED (Determination of the Geoid in the Mediterranean) Project.

Book excerpt: These Proceedings include the written version of papers presented at the IAG International Symposium on "Gravity, Geoid and Earth Observation 2008". The Symposium was held in Chania, Crete, Greece, 23-27 June 2008 and organized by the Laboratory of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece. The meeting was arranged by the International Association of Geodesy and in particular by the IAG Commission 2: Gravity Field. The symposium aimed at bringing together geodesists and geophysicists working in the general areas of gravity, geoid, geodynamics and Earth observation. Besides covering the traditional research areas, special attention was paid to the use of geodetic methods for: Earth observation, environmental monitoring, Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS), Earth Gravity Models (e.g., EGM08), geodynamics studies, dedicated gravity satellite missions (i.e., GOCE), airborne gravity surveys, Geodesy and geodynamics in polar regions, and the integration of geodetic and geophysical information.

Book excerpt: The demonstration of accuracy of the developed geoid model, which is compared to GPS/leveling, shows the model based on the gravity anomaly with respect to the terrain effects have better accuracy than the model based on the free-air gravity anomaly. The achievement on the precision of geoid undulation, computed on a 2 arcmin grid, is 5.6 cm in standard deviation. This model is based on the airborne-only gravity data considering not only the terrain effects but also the downward continuation. The bias in the gravimetric geoid of about 15.5 cm, determined from the comparison with the GPS/leveling data, agrees with previously determined values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the increasing importance of the role of gravity and the geoid, and con sidering the substantial synergistic effects which result from close cooperation, the International Gravity Commission and the International Geoid Commission, both scientific bodies of the International Association of Geodesy, decided to hold a Joint Meeting under the common topic "Gravity and Geoid" in Graz, Austria, from Sept. 11 - 17, 1994. The earth's gravity field is increasingly attracting the attention of the geosciences for many reasons. As a response of the earth's internal mass distribution, it significantly helps us to understand the structure of the earth and its dynamics. On the other hand, the earth's gravity field controls the orbits of satellites and is of paramount im portance for accurate orbit prediction'. For geodesy the geoid, representing the gravity field, serves as a unique height reference surface. It is the link between satellite-derived positions and useful geodetic coordinates of utmost precision. For oceanography, the offset of the dynamic ocean surface from the geoid is the signal which bears important information about ocean circulation patterns.

Book excerpt: The advent of the Global Positioning System (GPS) as a surveying tool has changed the tendency for surveyors to depend on local vertical datum for height determination. This is due to the fact that, currently it is possible to determine heights referred to the geoid using GPS and then transform these heights so that they refer to the local vertical datum and vice versa. This book focuses on determination of transformation parameters between The Tanzania National Levelling Datum (TNLD) and the geoid, and computation of Digital Finite Element Height Reference Surface (DFHRS) for GPS heighting.

Book excerpt: Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) plays a key role in high precision navigation, positioning, timing, and scientific questions related to precise positioning. This is a highly precise, continuous, all-weather, and real-time technique. The book is devoted to presenting recent results and developments in GNSS theory, system, signal, receiver, method, and errors sources, such as multipath effects and atmospheric delays. Furthermore, varied GNSS applications are demonstrated and evaluated in hybrid positioning, multi-sensor integration, height system, Network Real Time Kinematic (NRTK), wheeled robots, and status and engineering surveying. This book provides a good reference for GNSS designers, engineers, and scientists, as well as the user market.

Book excerpt: The present report reviews and interrelates various methods for the local or regional determination of the geoid or of height anomalies according to Molodensky (i.e, of the quasi-geoid) from deflections of the vertical -- the astrogeodetic method -- or by a combination of vertical deflections with gravity anomalies by least-squares collocation. The classical astrogeodetic determination of the geoid by integration of vertical deflections reduced to sea level is compared with Molodensky's determination of height anomalies by integration of vertical deflections along the earth's surface. Extensive consideration is given to the reduction for curvature of the plumb line and to topographic-isostatic reduction of vertical deflections in the classical sense, which is a reduction to sea level, and in the modern sense, where the point remains on earth's surface. Then the application of collocation to the present problem is discussed. Finally, some results concerning geoid computations for Austria by collocation are outlined.
