Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is vigorous debate both among economists and policy makers about the desirability and effects of national strategic trade and industrial policies. What are the effects of such policies in a world in which a considerable share of trade and economic activity is accounted for by multinational enterprises? This book provides some original answers by applying theoretical analysis in industrial economics to the trade and investment behaviour of Japanese electronics firms. It examines how these Japanese firms responded to antidumping measures and local content requirements in the European Community. It looks at the determinants of Japanese direct foreign investment and its effects on trade flows as well as at the role of Japanese industrial groups (keiretsu). The study is completed by analysis of two important new issues in international trade: the strategic effects of anti-trust policy in global markets and cascading protection from upstream to downstream industries.

Book Synopsis A Framework for the Design and Implementation of Competition Law and Policy by : R. S. Khemani
Download or read book A Framework for the Design and Implementation of Competition Law and Policy written by R. S. Khemani and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynamic and competitive environment, underpinned by competition law policy, is an essential characteristic of successful market economies. To satisfy the growing demand for information on current approaches and practices in competition law policy, the project "Framework for the Design and Implementation of Competition Law-Policy" was initiated by the World Bank, with participation by OECD. This ensuing volume reflects the main issues that arise in design and implementation of competition law and policy in order to assist countries in developing an approach that suits their own needs and conditions. The views articulated in this publication suggest that the administration and enforcement of competition law policy should assign the greatest importance to fostering economic efficiency and consumer welfare.

The chapters address current policy issues in competition and regulation. The book contains contributions at the frontier of competition economics and regulation and provides perspectives on recent research findings in the field. Written by experts in their respective fields, the book brings together current thinking on market forces at play in imperfectly competitive industries, how firms use anti-competitive practices to their advantage and how competition policy and regulation can address market failures. It provides an in-depth analysis of various ongoing debates and offers fresh insights in terms of conceptual understanding, empirical findings and policy implications. The book contributes to our understanding of imperfectly competitive markets, anti-competitive practices and competition policy and regulation.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These contributions discuss a number of important developments over the past decade in a newly established and important field of economics that have led to notable changes in views on governmental competition policies. They focus on the nature and role of competition and other determinants of market structures, such as numbers of firms and barriers to entry; other factors which determine the effective degree of competition in the market; the influence of major firms (especially when these pursue objectives other than profit maximization); and decentralization and coordination under control relationships other than markets and hierarchies.ContributorsJoseph E.
