Book excerpt: The local chicken sector provides a valuable function in the livelihood of rural smallholders. The local chicken production plays an important role as an income generator, for household consumption and for social and cultural obligations at low inputs. Even though local chickens provide a valuable function in the livelihood of rural smallholders, little research and development work has been carried out to characterize, understand and improve the local chicken production systems. This book, therefore, provides valuable information on the characteristics of local chicken production and their production performance under scavenging system. Therefore, this book is useful to researchers, experts and extension workers who are interested to work and study on local chicken production.

Book excerpt: "The poultry production systems of Africa are mainly based on the scavenging indigenous chickens found in virtually all villages and households in rural Africa. These systems are characterized by low output per bird. Nevertheless, over 70 percent of the poultry products and 20 percent of animal protein intake in most African countries come from this sector. Therefore, increased rural poultry production would result in a positive impact on household food security both in increased dietary intake and in income generation. ... This study coincided with the World Food Summit, held at FAO, Rome, from 13 to 17 November 1996, where delegations committed their governments and civil society to a global attack on food insecurity and poverty. Poultry, like other short-cycle animal stock, is viewed by the FAO Special Programme for Food Security (SPFS) as a crucial element in the struggle for sustained food production and poverty alleviation. The guidelines provided in this study are particularly pertinent to those countries participating in the SPFS where village chicken production will have a substantial impact on increased household food security and gender equity."--Foreword.

Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Agrarwissenschaften, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This review is done on comparative evaluation of production and reproduction performances and constraints of local and exotic layer chicken in Ethiopia. Poultry is by far the largest group of livestock species in the world and chicken largely dominate flock composition. In Ethiopia; except chickens other poultry species production is not practicing that they are living in their natural habitat. The poultry sector in Ethiopia can be characterized into three major production systems based on some selected parameters such as breed, flock size, housing, feed, health, technology and bio-security. These are large commercial or intensive, small scale commercial or semi-intensive and free range or village back yard poultry production system. However, the majority of chicken production system in Ethiopia remains as village or back scavenging system which consist the indigenous chickens as major. In Ethiopia, poultry industry plays a significant role in the supply of human food (eggs and meat) in rural and urban area and as a source of income, especially to small holder farmers. Mean number of egg production was higher for exotic breed than local chicken ecotypes. Higher egg production and better reproductive life span is obtained from exotic chickens than local ones. Moreover, overall survival rate of exotic and crossbred chickens are found comparable to local chicken. Therefore, introducing Bovans Brown chickens having better productive and reproductive performance is important to enhance productivity. Non-genetic factors should also be considered to improve the performance of existing local chicken population. But, feed shortage, disease and other critical gaps that need to be filled by the institutions of research and development to improve the productive performance of exotic chicken breed in Ethiopia.

This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses a broad range of vital issues encompassing the production and consumption of food in the current period of climate change. All of these add up to looming, momentous challenges to food security, especially for people in regions where malnutrition and famine have been the norm during numerous decades. Furthermore, threats to food security do not stop at the borders of more affluent countries – governance of food systems and changes in eating patterns will have worldwide consequences. The book is arranged in four broad sections. Part I, Combating Food Insecurity: A Global Responsibility opens with a chapter describing the urgent necessity for new paradigm and policy set to meet the food security challenges of climate change. Also in this section are chapters on meat and the dimensions of animal welfare, climate change and sustainability; on dietary options for mitigating climate change; and the linkage of forest and food production in the context of the REDD+ approach to valuation of forests. Part II, Managing Linkages Between Climate Change and Food Security offers a South Asian perspective on Gender, Climate Change and Household Food Security; a chapter on food crisis in sub-Saharan Africa; and separate chapters on critical issues of food supply and production in Nigeria, far-Western Nepal and the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Cameroon. Part III examines Food Security and patterns of production and consumption, with chapters focused on Morocco, Thailand, Bahrain, Kenya and elsewhere. The final section discusses successful, innovative practices, with chapters on Food Security in Knowledge-Based Economy; Biosaline Agriculture in the Gulf States; Rice production in a cotton zone of Benin; palm oil in the production of biofuel; and experiments in raised-bed wheat production. The editors argue that technical prescriptions are insufficient to manage the food security challenge. They propose and explain a holistic approach for adapting food systems to global environmental change, which demands the engagement of many disciplines – a new, sustainable food security paradigm.

This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objectives of the current study were to characterize the local chicken (LC) and their production systems in Jordan, to investigate the prevalence of different gastrointestinal helminthes in these systems and to compare the resistance response of LC and Lohmann White (LW) when challenged by different geographic sources of parasites. The study was carried out in the rural areas of northern districts of Jordan. The area is of Mediterranean climate with annual precipitation about 200 - 350 mm. On-farm studies and surveys were carried out in 18 villages with participation of 120 households. The study was accomplished in two phases, the first was conducted from October 2004 to February 2005 and the second was conducted from May to July 2005. On-farm surveys were conducted to investigate biodiversity of LC and their performance potential. A sample of 846 adult LC was phenotypically characterized based on morphology, feather colors, comb shape, and performance. The level of morphological and phenotypic heterogeneity was high. The most predominant chicken type was Baladi chicken (67.3 %) followed by Pakistani (27.7 %) and Brahma (5 %). Naked neck and Frizzled phenotype were occasionally observed in the study area. The Baladi type was characterized by its small size compared to Pakistani and Brahma. It has horizontal body position and large vertical tail. Pakistani type characterized by the upright stance, larger body size than Baladi, the tail slope to be horizontal rather than vertical, soft and long feather, prominent shoulders and narrow stern. Braham has a very large body size, heavy bone and muscles. They are highly feathered birds with heavily feathered legs and toes. Many plumage colors were observed in LC populations. Individual chicken might have single, two or many colors (mottled). The mottled was the most predominant (23.1 %) followed by the black (19.5 %) and light brownish color (19.1 %). Brown and black was relatively prevalent (17.0 %). Other variants like spotted, grey, red, spangled green, and yellow were seen in different proportions. Many comb variants were found, the single comb type was the most predominant (80.3 %). Other variants were Buttercup shape, Double, Pea shape and V-shaped with feather cap.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the impacts of current and future reproductive technologies on our world food production and provides a significant contribution to the importance of research in the area of reproductive physiology that has never been compiled before. It would provide a unique opportunity to separate the impacts of how reproductive technologies have affected different species and their contributions to food production. Lastly, no publication has been compiled that demonstrates the relationship between developments in reproductive management tools and food production that may be used a reference for scientists in addressing future research areas. During the past 50 years assisted reproductive technologies have been developed and refined to increase the number and quality of offspring from genetically superior farm animal livestock species. Artificial insemination (AI), estrous synchronization and fixed-time AI, semen and embryo cryopreservation, multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET), in vitro fertilization, sex determination of sperm or embryos, and nuclear transfer are technologies that are used to enhance the production efficiency of livestock species.
