Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the historical development of the teaching profession, this book explores how the relationship between education and the formation of modern nation states has influenced both the status of the profession as a whole and the differential status accorded to different kinds of teachers within it. Addressing different national and international contexts with seven distinct case studies, the book provides a comparative analysis of the long-term trajectories that illuminate the nature of teaching as a public profession, and demonstrates the variety of forms that labour markets have taken in different contexts. Offering new and up-to-date international analysis at a critical time for the field of teacher research, when recruitment into the profession and retention are major challenges, the volume will be of interest to scholars, researchers and doctoral students engaged in teacher research and comparative and international education more broadly. Those involved with education policy and politics will also benefit from reading this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberal education policies have privatised, marketised, decentralized, controlled and surveilled, managed according to the business and control principles of new public managerialism, attacked the rights and conditions of education workers, and resulted in a loss of democracy, critique and equality of access and outcome. This book, written by an impressive international array of scholars and activists, explores the mechanisms and ideologies behind neoliberal education, while evaluating and promoting resistance on a local, national and global level. Chapters examine the activities and impacts of the arguably socialist revolution in Venezuela, the Porto Alegre democratic community experimental model in Brazil, the activities of the Rouge Forum of democratic socialist teachers and educators in the USA, Public Service International, resistance movements against the GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services), and trade union and social movement and community/parental opposition to neoliberal education policies in Britain and in Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses current changes of education policies in a context of globalisation. It does so by focusing on the implementation of performance-based accountability policies in France and in Quebec (Canada). It questions the trajectory of these policies, their mediations and their instrumentation in various territories and schools through a theoretical framework which combines a North American neo-institutionalist approach with the perspective of the French sociologie de l’action publique. The book extends the current international literature on English-speaking experiences of hard accountability to research on “soft” accountability policies and proposes a deep investigation in two highly contrasted education systems. This investigation is multilevel and has led to field research both in schools, in intermediate authorities, and in central administrations for three years. The research presented in the book addresses the international literature on accountability in public administration and in education, the current transformations of governance in education, as well as the forms taken by the globalisation of education policies in countries differently exposed to international influences. The comparison highlights a convergent neo-statist trajectory of the performance-based accountability policy in the two countries, various forms of governance by results enacted at the local and meso level, and more intense impacts of these policies on schools and teacher’s practices in Quebec than in France.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversies that have developed in recent years in the field of education and training around program and competency-based approaches are not without reminiscent of those which are at the origin of a reflection on the question of methods to monitor, control, organize and shape innovation in science and technology "and led to the emergence of the notion of responsibility for innovation and research "(Pellé & Reber, 2015). This book is clearly part of this type of approach. Starting from a current state of play on the issues and controversies raised by curricular and competency-based approaches (Chapters 1 and 2), this book aims at presenting new theoretical frameworks, allowing to account for the processes implied by the implementation of these pedagogical innovations and, in particular, those which, at the very heart of the skills mobilized, promote a "responsibility" dimension. Based on a developmental approach to individual and collective competencies and their evaluation (Chapters 3, 4 and 5), it attempts to show how this approach can mobilize educational practices on strong societal issues, such as "sustainable development "(Chapter 5). Lastly, it aims to provide theoretical and practical benchmarks to help engage educational teams and institutions in these innovative and responsible approaches by providing a coherent framework for doing so (Chapters 6, 7 and 8).

It highlights the importance of collaboration between policy-makers and unions and makes relevant recommendations. While significant progress has been made in terms of educational coverage, ensuring the quality of the education imparted remains a priority, and depends largely on teachers - more particulary on their knowledge, methods and motivation. A major concern of planners, managers and decision-makers is to establish a better understanding of teachers' unions and to work with them as closely as possible. The booklet describes how teachers' unions in Latin America operate and discusses their foremost preoccupations, as well as presenting some strategies to appease conflicts and potential solutions to current problems.
