Book excerpt: Fuel loading patterns which have a minimum power peak are economically desirable to allow power reactors to operate at the highest possible power density and to minimize the possibility of fuel failure. A computer code called SHUFLE was developed for pressurized water reactors which shuffles the fuel in search of the lowest possible power peaking factor. An iterative approach is used in this search routine. A radial power distribution is calculated from which the program logic Selects a movement of fuel elements in an attempt to lower the radial power peak. Another power calculation is made and the process repeated until a predetermined convergence is reached. The logic by which the code decides the fuel movement is presented, along with the criteria for accepting or rejecting the move after a power calculation of the new loading pattern is made. A 1.5 group course mesh diffusion theory method was used to obtain the power distribution for each SHUFLE iteration. Convergence to a final loading pattern varies from about 10 to 40 shuffling iterations depending on the initial loading presented to the code. Since the typical computer running time for a one-quarter core power distribution with this 1.5 group method is only one to a few seconds, depending on the loading, convergence to a good loading pattern takes on the order of one minute on a Univac 1108. The low computer cost plus ease of operation should make this code of considerable use in determining loading patterns with minimum power peaking for any given set of fuel elements. The program also has burnup capability which can be used to check power peaking throughout core life. A parametric analysis study of fuel cycle costs for a PWR is also presented. Cost parameters analyzed were variation in the cost of yellow cake, enrichment, money, fabrication, and reprocessing plus changes in burnup, load factors, power densities, and the effect of forced early discharge. Figures are presented to indicate total fuel costs as a function of burnup for these cost parameters. Linear relationships for minimum cost and optimum burnup are presented for each parameter.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the development and analysis of a deterministic optimization scheme termed Greedy Exhaustive Dual Binary Swap for the optimization of nuclear reactor core loading patterns. The goal of this optimization scheme is to emulate the approach taken by an engineer when manually optimizing a reactor core loading pattern. This is to determine if this approach is able to locate high quality patterns that, due to their location in the core loading solution space, are consistently missed by standard stochastic optimization methods such as those in the genetic algorithm class, or those in the simulated annealing class. This optimization study is carried out using the poropy tool to handle the reactor physics model. Initially, optimizations are carried out using beginning of cycle eigenvalue as a surrogate for core excess reactivity and thus cycle length. The deterministic Dual Binary Swap is found to locate acceptable patterns less reliably than stochastic methods, but those that are located are of higher quality. Optimizations of the full depletion problem result in the deterministic Dual Binary Swap optimizer locating patterns that are of higher quality than those found by the stochastic Simulated Annealing, with comparable frequency. The Dual Binary Swap optimizer is, however, found to be very dependent on the starting core configuration, and can not reliably find a high quality pattern from any given starting configuration.

Consisting of a collection of algorithms and methods, the LRM describes complex core behavior, but it is simpler than the complex programs developed for design calculations. This makes the LRM particularly useful as a teaching tool to explain the basic principles of nuclear fuel management. The LRM mainly focuses on the pressurized water reactor, but it is also directly applicable to the boiling water reactor. Application of the LRM to the CANDU reactor is also covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multi-cycle nuclear fuel cycle optimization code, BWROPT (Boiling Water Reactor OPTimization), has been developed. BWROPT uses the Parallel Simulated Annealing (PSA) algorithm to solve the coupled out-of-core and in-core optimization problems. There are two depletion methods used for the in-core optimization: the Haling depletion and a Control Rod Pattern (CRP) search. The result of this optimization is the optimum new fuel inventory and the core loading pattern for the first cycle considered in the optimization. Several changes were made to the optimization algorithm with respect to other nuclear fuel cycle optimization codes that use PSA. Instead of using constant sampling probabilities for the solution perturbation types throughout the optimization, as is usually done, the sampling probabilities can be varied to get a better solution and/or decrease runtime. Also, the new fuel types available for use can be sorted into an array based on any parameter so that each parameter can be incremented or decremented. In addition several evaluations were performed to test the CRP search option. Using the variable sampling probabilities was found to produce slightly better results in less time than the standard method of having constant sampling probabilities. Performing ordered and random sampling of the new fuel types using the new fuel type array was found to yield slightly better solutions on average than random sampling alone, but with a somewhat higher runtime. Using variable length Markov chains for optimizations in which a CRP search is performed for the first cycle and the Haling depletion is used for the remaining cycles was found to increase CPU utilization by 33%. Starting the CRP search with the CRP determined for the previous solution was found to be better than starting the CRP search with all of the rods fully withdrawn. Using the CRP search in an optimization was slow and produced inferior results compared to using the Haling depletion, indicating the need for more work in this area.

The optimization technique employed is the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm, while the evaluation of design objectives and constraints is handled by coupling to the lattice-physics code CPM-2. The optimization control variables include the "pin-by-pin" placement and/or loading of nuclear fuel, burnable absorbers, or other material regions within a fuel assembly (e.g. water holes, guide tubes, etc.). Also, the designer can "freeze" any given region during the optimization, both in terms of location and/or composition. The objective functions presently available include the minimization of 235U enrichment or the minimization of pin power peaking, both of which can act as constraints to one another (via penalty-based or hard constraints).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, a computer program package has been developed which supports thein-core fuel management activities for pressurised water reactors, generates and recommends optimum loading patterns to ensure safe and efficient reactor operation.A search for an optimum fuel loading pattern must be conducted in the space ofseveral core parameters such as power distribution, which is an excessively timeconsuming computational process. Global core calculation codes take a relativelylong time to do the task. The time interval necessary for the iterative process was reduced by using an artificial neural network estimator for the calculations. In this way , it was possible to analyse more loading patterns in the same time interval and the probability of finding a desired optimum was increased. As a case study , the core of the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant of Spain, a pressurised water reactor, was modelled for the core calculation code system. The 2-group cross sections for the fuel assembly types were calculated and stored for later usage with the diffusion code. The fuel depletion effects were omitted.2000 loading patterns were generated by placing fuel assemblies to random positions in the core, and for each pattern the power distribution and effective multiplication factor (keff) were calculated with the diffusion code. At the next stage, 500 of the loading patterns were introduced to the neural network as input data for the training process. The remaining 1500 patterns were used to validate the neural network implementation. It was shown that the neural network estimates the power distribution and the effective multiplication factor within acceptable error limits. To complete the system, a loading pattern generator was developed. This moduleconsists of a set of rules and an algorithm that places the fuel assemblies to core positions. The neural network estimated the power distribution and effective multiplication factor for the loading patterns that were generated. The patterns that have a maximum power fraction lower than, and a minimum effective multiplication factor higher than reference values were stored as candidate optimum patterns. At the last stage of the work, an alternative loading pattern generator based on genetic algorithm method was developed. in this method, an initial loading pattern is improved by applying the genetic operators to obtain the optimum. The loading patterns obtained from the simple rule-based and the genetic algorithm methods were compared, and the genetic algorithm was shown to be more successful. It was seen that, it is possible to automate in-core fuel management activities by applying artificial intelligence techniques.

The loading of these assemblies is done with the goal of reducing its overall cost while maintaining safety limits. Typically, the core designers choose a unique position and fuel enrichment for each assembly through use of expert judgement. In this thesis, alternatives to the current core reload design process are explored. Genetic algorithm and deep Q-learning are applied in an attempt to reduce core design time and improve the final core layout. The reference core represents a 4-loop pressurized water reactor where fixed number of fuel enrichments and burnable poison distributions are assumed. The algorithms automatically shuffles the assembly positions to find the optimum loading pattern. It is determined that both algorithms are able to successfully start with a poorly performing core loading pattern and discover a well performing one, by the metrics of boron concentration, cycle exposure, enthalpy-rise factor, and pin power peaking. This shows potential for further applications of these algorithms for core design with a more expanded search space.
