Book excerpt: Rawson and Tupper's Basic Ship Theory, first published in 1968, is widely known as the standard introductory text for naval architecture students, as well as being a useful reference for the more experienced designer. The fifth edition continues to provide a balance between theory and practice. Volume 1 discusses ship geometry and measurement in its more basic concepts, also covering safety issues, structural strength, flotation, trim and stability. Volume 2 expands on the material in Volume 1, covering the dynamics behaviour of marine vehicles, hydrodynamics, manoeuvrability and seakeeping. It concludes with some case studies of particular ship types and a discussion of maritime design. Both volumes feature the importance of considering the environment in design.Basic Ship Theory is an essential tool for undergraduates and national vocational students of naval architecture, maritime studies, ocean and offshore engineering, and this combined hardback version will be of great assistance to practising marine engineers and naval architects. - Brand new edition of the leading undergraduate textbook in Naval Architecture - Provides a basis for more advanced theory - Over 500 examples, with answers

Book Synopsis Refrigeration units in marine vessels by : Prof. Dr.-Ing. A. Hafner
Download or read book Refrigeration units in marine vessels written by Prof. Dr.-Ing. A. Hafner and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishing vessels can be equipped with energy efficient refrigeration technology applying natural working fluids. Ammonia refrigeration systems have been the first choice, but CO2 units have also become increasingly common in the maritime sector in the last few years. When retrofitting or implementing CO2 refrigeration plants, less space on board is required and such units allow good service and maintenance. Nowadays, cruise ship owners prefer CO2 units for the provision refrigeration plants.Ship owners, responsible for the health and safety of the crew and passengers, must carefully evaluate the usage of flammable low GWP working fluids, due to a high risk that toxic decomposition products are formed, even without the presence of an open flame. Suggestions for further work include a Nordic Technology Hub for global marine refrigeration R&D and development support for key components.

This book was released on 2019-05-18 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Mechanics of Ship Collision and Grounding provides simplified analytical procedures for ship collision and grounding assessments, including probabilistic methods, an estimation of the energy released during collisions, and a prediction of the extent of damage on involved structures. An additional chapter is dedicated to current finite element analysis techniques that are used for estimating structural damage during ship collisions. The book encapsulates reliable and fast analysis methods for collision and grounding assessment, presenting tactics that have been extensively validated with experimental and numerical results. In addition, all described analysis methods include realistic calculation examples to provide confidence in their use. - Provides mathematical expressions for the determination of probability of ship grounding events, ship to ship collisions and ship collisions against fixed and floating offshore installations, i.e., offshore wind parks and bridges over navigational channels - Provides analytical solutions to calculate the energy released for crushing in ship collision scenarios and loading on ship bottoms in grounding events - Reviews damage theorems and materials modellings and presents simplified analytical methods to determine the structural damage of ship and offshore structures in ship collisions and grounding - Provides calculation examples for each analysis method
