Book Synopsis Ethnomathematics in Action by : Milton Rosa
Download or read book Ethnomathematics in Action written by Milton Rosa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of ethnomathematical studies of diverse mathematical practices in Afro-Brazilian, indigenous, rural and urban communities in Brazil. Ethnomathematics as a research program aims to investigate the interrelationships of local mathematical knowledge sources with broader universal forms of mathematics to understand ideas, procedures, and practices found in distinct cultural groups. Based on this approach, the studies brought together in this volume show how this research program is applied and practiced in a culturally diverse country such as Brazil, where African, indigenous and European cultures have generated different forms of mathematical practice. These studies present ethnomathematics in action, as a tool to connect the study of mathematics with the students’ real life experiences, foster critical thinking and develop a mathematics curriculum which incorporates contributions from different cultural groups to enrich mathematical knowledge. By doing so, this volume shows how ethnomathematics can contribute in practice to the development of a decolonial mathematics education. Ethnomathematics in Action: Mathematical Practices in Brazilian Indigenous, Urban and Afro Communities will be of interest to educators and educational researchers looking for innovative approaches to develop a more inclusive, democratic, critical, multicultural and multiethnic mathematics education.
Book Synopsis Research & Innovation Forum 2019 by : Anna Visvizi
Download or read book Research & Innovation Forum 2019 written by Anna Visvizi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features research presented and discussed during the Research & Innovation Forum (Rii Forum) 2019. As such, this volume offers a unique insight into emerging topics, issues and developments pertinent to the fields of technology, innovation and education and their social impact. Papers included in this volume apply inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches to query such issues as technology-enhanced teaching and learning, smart cities,, information systems, cognitive computing and social networking. What brings these threads of the discussion together is the question of how advances in computer science – which are otherwise largely incomprehensible to researchers from other fields – can be effectively translated and capitalized on so as to make them beneficial for society as a whole. In this context, Rii Forum and Rii Forum proceedings offer an essential venue where diverse stakeholders, including academics, the think tank sector and decision-makers, can engage in a meaningful dialogue with a view to improving the applicability of advances in computer science. In brief, Rii Forum takes the imperative inherent in the 4th industrial revolution seriously, in that it identifies ways of making technology usable and therefore inclusive.

Book Synopsis Books and Periodicals in Brazil 1768-1930 by : Ana Claudia Suriani Da Silva
Download or read book Books and Periodicals in Brazil 1768-1930 written by Ana Claudia Suriani Da Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Portuguese Royal Court moved to its South-American colony in 1808, books and periodicals had a very limited circulation there. It was only when Brazilian ports were opened to foreign trade that the book trade began to flourish, and printed matter became more easily available to readers, whether for pleasure, for instruction or for political reasons. This book brings together a collection of original articles on the transnational relations between Brazil and Europe, especially England and France, in the domain of literature and print culture from its early stages to the end of the 1920s. It covers the time when it was forbidden to print in Brazil, and Portugal strictly controlled which books were sent to the colony, through the quick flourishing of a transnational printing industry and book market after 1822, to the shift of hegemony in the printing business from foreign to Brazilian hands at the beginning of the twentieth century. Sandra Guardini Vasconcelos is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Sao Paulo.

Book excerpt: The city of Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia (in the 18th century the capital of the vice-reign of Brazil) contains diverse monuments of baroque style; the church of the convent of San Francis of Assisi is its most extraordinary example. This amazing Franciscan temple and convent located in the Terreiro de Jesus, mixes a sober and grandiose architecture with the refined blue and golden tile decorations and the protuberant golden and polychrome ornamental carving that features the glorious reign of dom Joao V in Portugal. Sculptor end researcher Mozart Alberto Bonazzi Da Costa presents a study of the "archaeology of past trades that should be conserved" (p. 17). In a first section the author reviews the historical aspects, the carving techniques and instruments used, the different styles and the aesthetic and symbolic aspects of the decorative carvings and in a second part includes a detailed analysis of the Church (the central nave, the pulpits, chancel, etc.) and the ornamental Repertory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing New Worlds analyses the different ways in which travel literature constituted a fundamental pillar in the production of knowledge in the modern era. The impressive frequency of publication and the widespread circulation of translations and editions account for the leading and essential contribution of travel literature for a better understanding and awareness about the dynamics and practices associated with decoding and making sense of the prose of the world. These texts, in some cases accompanied by illustrations, covered a broad and extensive panoply of languages, grammars and ways of seeing, translating and writing new worlds. In drawing special attention to internationally less-studied sources from Portugal and Germany, the book shows how authors, scholars and artists between the 15th and 17th centuries responded to the challenges of modernity, and explores the cultural dynamics involved in grasping and understanding the New.
