Book Synopsis EU Counterterrorism Policy by : Oldrich Bures
Download or read book EU Counterterrorism Policy written by Oldrich Bures and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is a vast body of literature covering the ongoing debates concerning the novelty and gravity of the contemporary terrorist threat, as well as the most appropriate response to it, few authors have thus far analysed the complex set of counterterrorism measures that both the individual Member States and the European Union (EU) have attempted to develop. This volume offers a critical analysis of the measures the European Union has taken to combat terrorism and how, in a number of key areas, EU counterterrorism policy is more of a paper tiger than an effective counterterrorism device. Several legal EU counterterrorism instruments have not been properly implemented at the national level and questions have been raised regarding their effectiveness, appropriateness, and proportionality. The capabilities of EU agencies in the area of counterterrorism remain rather weak and the EU Counterterrorism Coordinator does not have any real powers apart from persuasion. However, this does not mean that EU level action cannot offer any value-added in the fight against terrorism. There are several areas where the EU can provide genuine value-added in the fight against terrorism due to the transnational nature of the contemporary terrorist threat and the nature of a borderless Europe.

Book Synopsis Policing the European Union by : Malcolm Anderson
Download or read book Policing the European Union written by Malcolm Anderson and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1995 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International co-operation in criminal law enforcement has become a centrally important policy issue for Europe in the 1990s. In criminal matters, when a decision is taken to go beyond the discretionary exchange of information towards institutionalized police co-operation, a whole Pandora'sbox of issues and problems is opened. This book, based on interviews in a wide variety of documentary sources, examines the progress of this co-operation. The authors cover all the major and theoretical issues associated with the emerging pattern of co-operation, including the harmonization ofcriminal law and criminal procedure, law enforcement strategies, police organization and discipline, and the politics of immigration and civil liberties. In a European Union without internal border controls there is widespread agreement on the objective of closer police co-operation. But prospects in some areas are not good and there are potential pitfalls, even dangers, along the road to more integrated arrangements. The authors conclude by makingrecommendations that proper accountability arrangements are a prerequisite of a balanced and efficient system of European police co-operation.
Book Synopsis Europe and Transnational Terrorism by : Franz Eder
Download or read book Europe and Transnational Terrorism written by Franz Eder and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terrorist attacks in Madrid and London underlined the fact that Europe is not spared from transnational jihadist terror and that its counter-terrorist efforts cannot be confined to remote regions like Afghanistan. On the contrary, European countries have become battle zones in a struggle that will remain a central moment of international relations in the years to come. This struggle poses a number of new challenges in diverse fields such as banking, information and communication technologies, or judicial co-operation and even though terrorism is no new phenomenon within the shores of Europe, both the Union and its member states have been struggling to find adequate approaches to it. In the edited book "Europe and Transnational Terrorism" a number of leading experts in the field of terrorism research assess the threat to Europe and analyze counter-terrorist policies at Union and member state level. The articles cover the threat of al-Qaeda and homegrown jihadist networks, the risk of terrorist attacks with weapons of mass destruction, the counter-terrorist policies of Great Britain and Germany, transatlantic co-operation in homeland security, the Union's efforts to combat terrorist financing, and the possibility of deterring terrorist acts.
