Jesus said Christians are the "lights of the world"; Paul said they are to "shine like stars in the universe." These bright metaphors are a bold contrast to the ever-increasing darkness of evil that fills our world. Can Christians change the world as we have always believed? Can we turn the tide for good in our society? With inspiring messages from Joni Eareckson Tada, Dr. H. Norman Wright, Mother Theresa, Dr. Ronald Sider, and others, Dr. M. Norvel Young reveals ten practical and inspirational ways you can become the "living lights" Christ called you to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience an evocative combination of fantasy, history, and Jewish folklore in this lush and lyrical fairytale-inspired novel from the author of The Sisters of the Winter Wood. Deep in the Hungarian woods, the sacred magic of King Solomon lives on in his descendants. Gathering under the midnight stars, they perform small miracles and none are more gifted than the great Rabbi Isaac and his three daughters. Hannah, bookish and calm, can coax plants to grow even when the weather is bitterly cold. Sarah, defiant and strong, can control the impulsive nature of fire. And Levana, the fey one, can read the path of the stars to decipher their secrets. But darkness is creeping across Europe, threatening the lives of every Jewish person in every village. Each sister will have to make an impossible choice in an effort to survive—and change the fate of their family forever. Praise for The Light of the Midnight Stars: "Storytelling as spellcasting. Rossner has conjured something vivid and wild and true."—Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Mercies "Rossner creates a lush, immersive world through which the sprawling plot meanders, punctuated by moments of intense grief. The result is as lovely as it is heartbreaking." —Publishers Weekly "Rossner's tale is as lyrical as the slow growth of roots, the quick dance of fire, and the stately procession of the stars. Blending folktale with history, hope with tragedy, its touch will linger on your heart long after you put it down."—Marie Brennan For more from Rena Rossner, check out The Sisters of the Winter Wood.

This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This may be a very common concern: we do not want to be forgotten. Many go to great lengths to be remembered, creating the larger cemetery monuments, establishing endowments in their names, and seeing to it that named bridges, roads, and buildings continue their memory. And who intends to forget them? But it often happens, nonetheless. "Living Light" is a focus of writing to preserve memory, specifically on what made each of the strongest influences in my life most memorable to me. Glimpses of the life of each of these individuals are presented in such a way as to illustrate the Light of faith I saw shining through their life. These of whom you may read, were all significant, unique, Living Lights in my life. As I pondered and worked to complete this set of writings, I could begin to see better the connection and influence of each of these individuals in what I think today, and in all I was writing. Clearly, to me it was time to build this anthology of memory. The writing of each entry is meant to honor and preserve the memory of the person whose story I am telling. But, the greater inspiration to write this comes from the pages of the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus is recorded saying, in chapter 5, verse 6, "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven." The "works" of each of these individuals became Living Light to me, shining on steps of the "Way of Light" that is revealed as the best way of life for our travels here and now. I am so grateful to The Father for each one of these people who have been so very significant in my life, and I write that their works may shine on. Yes, I have written in the hope that the people, about whom these words are written, will not be forgotten. In recognizing the Light that each of these individuals was able to shine in his or her unique way, the greatest hope is that God will be glorified through the stories of their lives.

Book excerpt: How long has your Goliath dominated your days and pilfered your peace? Like David, you know well the presence of Goliath. Your Goliath doesn’t carry a sword or shield; he brandishes blades of unemployment, abandonment, or depression. Your giant doesn’t parade up and down ancient hills; he prances through your office, your bedroom, your classroom. He brings bills you can’t pay, addictions you can’t resist, a past you can’t shake, and a future you can’t face. How long has your Goliath stalked you? Invaded your first thought of the morning and last worry of the night? David knows a little something about facing giants. The shepherd boy seemingly had little to offer against the nine-foot, nine-inch Goliath. You could read his story and wonder what God saw in him. Throughout his life, David fell as often as he stood, stumbled as often as he conquered. But for those who know the threat of a Goliath, David gives this reminder: Focus on Giants—You Stumble. Focus on God—Your Giants Tumble. Are you ready to face your giant? Let David’s story inspire you. The same God who helped him will help you. Extended study guide included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume tells the story of the Churches of Christ, one of three major denominations that emerged in the United States from a religious movement led by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone in the early 19th century. Beginning as an effort to provide a basis on which all Christians in America could unite, the leaders of the movement relied on the faith and practice of the primitive church. Ironically, this unity movement eventually divided precisely along the lines of its original agenda, as the Churches of Christ rallied around the restorationist banner while the Disciples of Christ gathered around the ecumenical cause. Yet, having begun as a countercultural sect, the Churches of Christ emerged in the 20th century as a culture-affirming denomination. This brief history, together with biographical sketches of major leaders, provides a complete overview of the denomination in America. The book begins with a concise yet detailed history of the denomination's beginnings in the early 19th century. Tracing the influence of such leaders as Stone and Campbell, the authors chronicle the triumphs and conflicts of the denomination through the 19th century and its reemergence and renewal in the 20th century. The biographical dictionary of leaders in the Churches of Christ rounds out the second half of the book, and a chronology of important events in the history of the denomination offers a quick reference guide. A detailed bibliographic essay concludes the book and points readers to further readings about the Churches of Christ.
