Book excerpt: Cyprus ticks all the boxes. Sun. Sea. Cheap food and drink. Friendly, smiling people. How would you like to live there? Is this island heaven too good to be true? Surely there can be no darker side? Is there no lingering resentment from the colonial period and the bitter and vicious guerrilla war which ended it? What happens when Vic and his wife Gay come into contact with the real Cyprus, away from the garish, overdeveloped tourist resorts? They quickly find people even more friendly and generous than in the towns, although less likely to speak English. But they also discover terrible cruelty to animals; winter weather worse than tourists are led to believe; snakes, dangerous driving and earthquakes; hunters, armed to the teeth, excited and trigger happy; institutionalised hatred between Greek and Turkish Cypriots; racism and sexual exploitation of women tricked into coming to Cyprus from abroad. Is paradise lost?

Book excerpt: After eleven years of observing the Cypriot people, (of which I am one), I have written this book as a humorous, very much 'tongue in cheek' guide on Cyprus living. It is not meant to offend in any way, but what I have written is absolutely true. Once you learn to go with the flow Cyprus is a paradise. Please read with the humour it was intentionally written in.

Book excerpt: Description- Destination Cyprus - An American's Story - Misfortune, Discovery, Revival A planned trip to the author's parents homeland, Cyprus, brings with it a host of challenges and new realizations of what it takes to live a life that is both spiritually meaningful and productive. When Jim and his wife Nicole decide to take a few months and visit the Republic of Cyprus, they are thrust into a situation where their love for each other is put to the challenge and where each discovers what is important in their life. As we follow their adventure, we learn about the many ways Cyprus differs from New York City and the United States and how two Americans make an attempt to adapt to Greek Cypriot customs, the weather and the many different ways that this small island in the mediterranean makes seemingly accepted norms in the United States seem so difficult. For example, if you order wifi for your home or flat (apartment) then you have to wait for one or two months for installation. Unheard of in most developed countries. We learn about negotiation or bargaining, Cyprus style and how the banking system differs from any other country. If you are thinking of traveling to Cyprus, whether on vacation or for a stay, then this book will be invaluable as the author talks about the day-to-day challenges and requirements needed to live a life devoid of obstacles that will derail your visit. From the situation with drivers, to smokers to where to stay and where to avoid, you will gain an insight from someone that lived it and barely lived to talk about it. This is a true story about Cyprus living. A sad, shocking story about betrayal and grief. And an uplifting story about fighting, winning and discovering oneself.

Book excerpt: Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and possesses a rich blend of European and Eastern influence, as it stands facing east and west, with its history shaped by the Roman, Greek and Turkish Empires.Androulla Christou-Layton was born on the island in 1965 - it is her home and where her heart truly lies.In a place with a resident population of less than one million people, families are inextricably linked to each other, and whatever the distance between them those bonds remain strong. This book tells the story of Andry's life in Cyprus between 1965 and 1983, beginning with the creation of the Christou family, and then moving on to the generations that followed. It reveals a very personal insight into the world of a child growing up in difficult circumstances during years which included the dramatic events of a coup and invasion in 1974, plus a host of tragedies which touched her life, in some form or another.Above all else though it is a tale of hope and happiness as new births, christenings and weddings add to the family. If you like history, culture, customs, and food mixed in with a real-life story, and the odd 'fairy tale', told in a simple fashion then this is a book for you. It's a must-read for people looking to holiday on the island who want to experience and feel what life is really like behind the sun and the beaches. It will also appeal to historians and those with an interest in other people's way of life. You will certainly know much more about the real Cyprus by the end of it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Protectorate Cyprus, education was one of the most effective tools of imperial control and political manipulation used by the British. This book charts the cultural and educational aspects of British colonial rule in Cyprus and analyses what these policies reveal about the internal struggles on the island between 1931 and 1960. Cyprus had been under British occupation since 1878, but it was in the 1930s that educational policies acquired a strong political significance and became essential in preserving the British position on the island. The co-existence of two very strongly-held and eventually conflicting national identities in Cyprus, Greek-Orthodox and Turkish Muslim, inevitably led to the politicisation of education and culture on the island. Therefore, any attempts to impose British culture, language and way of thinking onto Cypriots, or even to create a distinct Cypriot identity, had very limited success. Gradually, the education system reflected the shifting political developments in colonial Cyprus. By the start of the 1950s, schools had become a breeding ground for discontent and between 1955 and 1959 they were an indispensable part of the EOKA revolt. In this book, Antigone Heraclidou provides a new dimension to the understanding and origins of the deadlock that was to prove one of the most intractable in the final years of the British Empire.

Book excerpt: The post-war decades of the 1950s to the 1970s saw a mass migration from Cyprus to the UK. More recent years, however, have witnessed a 'return' to Cyprus of the British-born children of Cypriot migrants in the UK. Drawing on multi-site fieldwork, and adopting a life narrative approach, this book offers a refreshing and contemporary account of the motives, experiences and life views of these second-generation British Cypriots, as they choose to build their lives in their parents' birth country: a Cyprus that has been dramatically altered by globalisation, mass tourism and immigration since the first generation of immigrants left for British shores. Unlike their parents, who moved from Cyprus to the UK mainly out of economic necessity, this new generation of migrants tends to view their relocation to Cyprus as a lifestyle choice. And while the first generation of Cypriot migrants in the UK generally worked and socialised within the bounds of the Cypriot community, the British-born 'return' migrants in Cyprus embrace a more international lifestyle, beyond primordial ethnic or national boundaries -- observations which challenge the hypothesis that second-generation return migration is based on an essential longing to go back to one's 'roots'. The author examines the complexities and ambivalences involved when exploring ideas of 'identity', 'return', 'home' and 'belonging' in the ancestral homeland -- demonstrating how boundaries of such notions are blurred, eroded and re-established by a new generation of migrants, reflecting their time, experiences, choices and ideologies. The book is essential reading for all those involved in Migration Studies and Cultural Anthropology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the summer of 1974, the island of Cyprus was home to two separate refugee communities. Charting the displaced cultures of the Greek Cypriot community in the south, and that of the Turkish communities in the north, Lisa Dikomitis provides a moving and detailed qualitative ethnography of the refugee experience in Cyprus. In her groundbreaking study, made possible by the opening of the north/south border during fieldwork, Dikomitis demonstrates how both ethnic groups are linked by their histories of displacement to a single 'place of desire', a small mountainous village located in the north of the island. By identifying the specific social and cultural meanings that the notions of home, identity, justice and suffering have come to have for both populations, Cyprus and its Places of Desire will appeal to scholars and students of Cypriot, Turkish and Greek history as well as those with an interest in the fields of anthropology, sociology and identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unease has marked relations between modern travel writers and the people of Cyprus. Visitors like Lawrence Durrell, Colin Thubron, Christopher Hitchens and Sebastian Junger have registered the effects of political strife on both the people of the island and those who visit from abroad. Their accounts demonstrate how geopolitical realities--such as colonization, insurgency, inter-communal warfare, and now decades of militarized 'peace'--shape the narrating self and its relations to others. Here, Jim Bowman assesses the effects of Cypriot history on writings about the island through an analysis of memoirs, travelogues, political journalism, guide books and ethnographies. Through this examination of popular texts, Bowman shows how a western and politicized image of Cyprus has been created, increasingly divorced from the realities experienced by the local population. Narratives of Cyprus is an important reassessment of Cyprus' place in British culture, and will be of interest to scholars and students of Anthropology, English Literature and Ethnographic Studies.

Book excerpt: This edited volume of interdisciplinary essays considers the aspects of nation, identity, and collective experience in the notoriously divided island of Cyprus. The contributors examine the role of international politics particularly the involvement of Greece and Turkey and examine the changing relationship between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities since 1955. The book challenges prevailing assumptions about political and cultural identity in Cyprus and theorizes on the prospects for mobilizing more multi-dimensional and workable formations of community on Cyprus. The result is a tightly conceived volume, divided into sections of national identity, political possibilities, the location of culture, and social and psychological perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book explores diverse contestations and transformations of sovereignty around the world. Sovereignty plays a central role in modern political thought and practice, but it also remains fundamentally contested. Depending on the context and perspective, it seems either omnipresent or elusive, liberating or oppressive, fading or resilient. Indeed, if in recent decades sovereignty has been expected to wane, today it is back on the agenda; not as the solid bedrock of modern – international – politics, which it never was, but as variations on a concept and institution that are ever contested and, as a result, constantly transforming. Bringing together perspectives from various disciplines, including International Relations (IR), political theory, geography, law, and anthropology, this volume: • goes beyond debates over the resilience or decline of sovereignty to instead emphasize how precisely the inherent ambiguities, tensions, and contestations in scholarship and practice spark sovereignty’s manifold transformations; • offers three theoretical chapters that examine the illusions, contradictions, transformation, and lasting appeal of sovereignty and the nation-state; • explores sovereignty from various disciplinary perspectives in 11 empirical chapters that highlight its role in different contexts around the world, from the European Union (EU) to the South China Sea, to Western Sahara and Palestine; • problematizes the interplay between theory and practice of statehood and sovereignty, as in the perception of Northern Cyprus as a ‘fake state’, scholars’ promotion of Kurdish ‘statehood’ in Iraq, and studies affirming the ‘Islamic State’. This book will be of much interest to students of statehood, sovereignty, conflict studies and International Relations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cyprus referendum of 2004 was a definitive moment in the recent history of Cyprus. The island's future hung in the balance - specifically the fate of the controversial Annan Plan, which proposed the creation of a single United Cyprus Republic with two constituent states. Accepted by the Turkish side but rejected by Greek Cypriots, the Plan was not implemented. In this balanced account of a highly charged period, Chrysostomos Pericleous offers an exhaustive treatment of the events that culminated in the referendum and through his comparative study, explains the positions ultimately taken by Greek and Turkish Cypriots. "The Cyprus Referendum" presents the definitive account of the course of action taken by President Tassos Papadopoulos and his ruling coalition which ultimately led to the resounding 'No' vote on the Annan Plan by the Greek Cypriots at the referendum.Pericleous places the events on the island within a wider global context, focusing especially on the re-orientation of US foreign policy in the Greece- Turkey-Cyprus triangle. Drawing together all the evidence, the author explores the consequences for the island and whether the rejection of the referendum will lead to a period of decline for Cyprus unless a dramatic change occurs in Greek Cypriot politics. An important contribution to the study of Cypriot politics, "The Cyprus Referendum" provides readers with a deeper insight into the broader political framework within which the UN peace initiative in Cyprus has developed. It is a meticulous study of a critical moment in Cypriot history and the depth of its research makes the book invaluable for anyone interested in the island - past, present and future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Britain's occupation of Cyprus in 1878 and the fall of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War, ethnic rivalry has dominated the island's divided history. This comprehensive collection of documentary evidence and archival sources offers an enlightening insight into the troubled political conflict of the island and seeks to illuminate the contested debate. "The Cyprus Issue" brings together material which scrutinises relations between Cyprus and Europe over the last twenty years, exploring the impact of international and constitutional law on the dispute. Paying particular attention to judgements delivered by the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, this volume sets out the legal and political documents which inform the discourse on the subject. Arguing that a wide range of interest groups will need greater access to legal and political documentation if Cyprus is to integrate itself fully into an ever broadening European Union, this book above all provides an essential resource for scholars and researchers seeking primary source data on contemporary Cyprus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the different perspectives and historical moments of nationalism in Cyprus. It does this by looking at nationalism as a form of identity, as a form of ideology, and as a form of politics. The fifteen contributors to this book are scholars of different scientific backgrounds and present Cypriot nationalisms from an interdisciplinary framework, including approaches such as history, political science, psychology, and gender studies. The chapters take a historical approach to nationalism and argue that the world of nations, ethnic identity, and national ideology are neither eternal, nor ahistorical nor primordial, but are rather socially constructed and function within particular historical and social contexts. As a land that was, and still is, marked by opposed nationalisms – that is, Greek and Turkish – Cyprus constitutes a fertile ground for examining the history, the dynamics, and the dialectics of nationalism.
