Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, novelist Iris Murdoch's life in her own words, from girlhood to her last years Iris Murdoch was an acclaimed novelist and groundbreaking philosopher whose life reflected her unconventional beliefs and values. But what has been missing from biographical accounts has been Murdoch's own voice—her life in her own words. Living on Paper—the first major collection of Murdoch's most compelling and interesting personal letters—gives, for the first time, a rounded self-portrait of one of the twentieth century's greatest writers and thinkers. With more than 760 letters, fewer than forty of which have been published before, the book provides a unique chronicle of Murdoch's life from her days as a schoolgirl to her last years. The result is the most important book about Murdoch in more than a decade. The letters show a great mind at work—struggling with philosophical problems, trying to bring a difficult novel together, exploring spirituality, and responding pointedly to world events. They also reveal her personal life, the subject of much speculation, in all its complexity, especially in letters to lovers or close friends, such as the writers Brigid Brophy, Elias Canetti, and Raymond Queneau, philosophers Michael Oakeshott and Philippa Foot, and mathematician Georg Kreisel. We witness Murdoch's emotional hunger, her tendency to live on the edge of what was socially acceptable, and her irreverence and sharp sense of humor. We also learn how her private life fed into the plots and characters of her novels, despite her claims that they were not drawn from reality. Direct and intimate, these letters bring us closer than ever before to Iris Murdoch as a person, making for an extraordinary reading experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together new interdisciplinary perspectives on the Spanish Civil War, its victims, its contentious ending, and its aftermath. In exploring the slow demise of the Spanish Republic and the course of the Civil War, the authors have chosen to range in turn over cinematic, literary and historical depictions of the era. In addition, reactions elsewhere in Europe to the Spanish conflict are examined; the role of the International Brigades is looked at afresh; the fate of children displaced during the Civil War is explored; and the Spanish anarcho-syndicalist movement is revisited. The volume shows that to be any kind of soldier in the armies of the Republic, or even to be seen as a Republican sympathiser, was to become a "non-person" in the new order in Spain under Franco, and sets what supporters of the Republic had to endure within the wider European and international context of the period. This book offers timely fresh insights into the failure of the Spanish Republic and into a society that tried in vain to unite its divided people during what was a seismic era in Spain’s history. This book was originally published as a special issue of Bulletin of Spanish Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life can be a conscious voyage on the sea of dreams, surfing the waves of love. This book is a response to the calling of my soul, who longed to tell her story which might inspire people to open up to live their story according to their own inner wisdom. Our soul keeps us constantly connected to the Source, and you might already have your preferred way of communicating with it. Whether through prayer, meditation, dreaming, or by listening to intuition, body awareness, breath flow, the language of nature, or the magic of synchronicity, everyone has access to their guidance within. We all carry a unique gift we have come here to develop and that makes each being an original work of art. While we live, we are fully responsible for our mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual condition. We were born into a specific body and background, potentially aware of how on a deeper level everything is interconnected – at the level of body, soul, humanity, our planet and the universe at large. Creating this book has become a three-year journey of healing, self-acceptance and increasing awareness of the uniqueness of my own journey. Where is the place on Earth where I am supposed to be? I asked myself a few years ago. During that time, my natural desire to grow my awareness on the path to mastery in being myself attracted many kindred spirits who whom we support each other. We enjoy being and living this mystery together. The dream of our soul holds the idea of what it wants to experience and create for ages and across lifetimes. The task of our human self is to open up to this big dream of the soul and allow it to reconcile anything that is not aligned with this great soul’s intent in our current life. Each of us moves within the flow of life as an endless experiment. Collectively, we are on Earth in the middle of a war for our consciousness and energy. The only way out of the chaos is through higher vibrational states of being such as love, peace and joy. It all starts with our thoughts, emotions, words and actions. Let’s not wait for any savior to tell us what to do. Instead, let’s turn inward. To the truth about the light of the Source, which is our essence. Let’s anchor in the awareness that we are love and thus allow our body to radiate it in the form of light outside of us. A few years ago, I had a dream in which I was presented with a list of values that will be fundamental on Earth in the future. I missed humanity among them. Our soul, heart, empathy and humanness, these qualities are now needed more than ever before. As the old structures of the outside world fall apart and we are seemingly constrained by restrictions, we are presented a life chance to immerse ourselves inside and by consciously sailing the endless sea of dreams on the waves of love, to return to our essence, which is crystal clear love. Only when we harmonize within may the outside world change. The game we play here therefore begins and ends inside each of us.

Tourism in Lanzarote remains resolutely ungreen and certainly wholly uncultural, 21st century hedonism, set in a bizarre lunar landscape - Martian, according to the travel agent. On Lanzarote, one can meet some fascinating human specimens - notably Pam and Barbara, 'non-exclusive' German lesbians - who can give rise to some interesting combinations. Will they succeed in seducing Rudi, the police inspector from Luxembourg, currently living in exile in Brussels. Or will he join the 'azraelian' sect, as they prepare for humanity to be regenerated by extra-terrestrials? As for our narrator, will he consider his week's holiday on the island a success?

Book excerpt: This book gives a sincere yet honest representation of modern nursing in all its forms rather than purely focusing only on the ‘good’ ‘the funny’ ‘the sad’ or the ‘ugly’. This book provides a collection of stories that concentrate on nursing, that validates, educates and encourages those undertaking a career in nursing. In addition, this book also celebrates the amazing rewards that the unique career of nursing has to offer, for those who can find a way to persevere through the challenges. There is a high rate of burnout among nurses in their early days of practice, because of the high demands placed on them by the healthcare system; hospital administrations; the expectations of management, patients, families and carers; and the sheer size of the patient loads with complex needs these days. The global pandemic erupting has now pushed a health care service that was already under pressure to now be in complete crisis. The world now knows that we need more nurses employed to be able to move forward from this calamity. This book closes that gap in that it encourages the readers to continue to pursue a career in nursing (despite the challenges that the profession holds) while also positively promoting the incredible work that nurses do. The chapters within this book, explore a cornucopia of different aspects of nursing including: caring for dying patients, dealing with bodily fluids and how patients are not very good at working out how sick they really are. The book also covers how to manage the care of patients with complex mental illnesses and those contemplating suicide. This book is targeted at nurses who may feel a little overwhelmed with the world that is nursing but who wish to thrive and further their career. Discussion questions at the end of the book further add to the reflection and learning process of the reader.
