Book excerpt: After eleven years of observing the Cypriot people, (of which I am one), I have written this book as a humorous, very much 'tongue in cheek' guide on Cyprus living. It is not meant to offend in any way, but what I have written is absolutely true. Once you learn to go with the flow Cyprus is a paradise. Please read with the humour it was intentionally written in.

Book excerpt: Cyprus ticks all the boxes. Sun. Sea. Cheap food and drink. Friendly, smiling people. How would you like to live there? Is this island heaven too good to be true? Surely there can be no darker side? Is there no lingering resentment from the colonial period and the bitter and vicious guerrilla war which ended it? What happens when Vic and his wife Gay come into contact with the real Cyprus, away from the garish, overdeveloped tourist resorts? They quickly find people even more friendly and generous than in the towns, although less likely to speak English. But they also discover terrible cruelty to animals; winter weather worse than tourists are led to believe; snakes, dangerous driving and earthquakes; hunters, armed to the teeth, excited and trigger happy; institutionalised hatred between Greek and Turkish Cypriots; racism and sexual exploitation of women tricked into coming to Cyprus from abroad. Is paradise lost?

Book excerpt: Borowiec portrays Cyprus as a permanent source of tension in the Eastern Mediterranean and a potential trigger for future conflict between Greece and Turkey. He describes the depth of animosity between Greek and Turkish Cypriots and analyzes the obstacles in the path of a search for a solution. Most casual observers see the conflict between Greeks and Turks on a strategic Mediterranean island as a struggle within a sovereign state. Borowiec concludes that there has never been a Cypriot nation, only Greeks and Turks living in Cyprus, separated by the hostility reflecting the traditional animosity between their motherlands. If these two groups could forget their past conflicts—as did, for example, Germany and Poland—there might be a way to end the partition of Cyprus. At the present time, however, the crisis is likely to continue with varying degrees of tension, threatening the entire Eastern Mediterranean and undermining NATO's cohesion. Borowiec traces the history of Cyprus from antiquity through Ottoman and British colonial rule and the post-independence period. He describes the break between the island's communities in 1963, the UN intervention of 1964, and the path toward the Athens junta's coup in 1974 which caused the Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of Cyprus. He compares the conflicting views of the protagonists—the Greek Cypriot majority and the Turkish Cypriot minority. Considerable attention is paid to the two separate economic and political entities on the island. Borowiec analyzes the futility of myriad international mediation efforts and suggests possible ways of creating a climate propitious to dialogue. This important new look at the Cypriot conflict will be valuable to researchers, policy makers, and scholars involved with the Eastern Mediterranean and conflict/peace studies.

Book excerpt: The book examines the evolution of the political, social and economic life of Cyprus from its conquest by Richard the Lionheart to the 1950 referendum on Enosis. Even with such a long period, around 900 years, the interest in controlling the island becomes clear given its particularly advantageous geographical position between Europe, Africa and Asia. Undoubtedly, Cyprus has always been an important centre for military and economic activity in the wider region. This book provides an interdisciplinary approach which combines history, political science, sociology, international relations and economics. It will be of interest to academics in Economic History, Middle-Eastern Studies, Mediterranean Studies and researchers in general, as well as anyone interested in political theory and the role of the state in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Britain's occupation of Cyprus in 1878 and the fall of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War, ethnic rivalry has dominated the island's divided history. This comprehensive collection of documentary evidence and archival sources offers an enlightening insight into the troubled political conflict of the island and seeks to illuminate the contested debate. "The Cyprus Issue" brings together material which scrutinises relations between Cyprus and Europe over the last twenty years, exploring the impact of international and constitutional law on the dispute. Paying particular attention to judgements delivered by the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, this volume sets out the legal and political documents which inform the discourse on the subject. Arguing that a wide range of interest groups will need greater access to legal and political documentation if Cyprus is to integrate itself fully into an ever broadening European Union, this book above all provides an essential resource for scholars and researchers seeking primary source data on contemporary Cyprus.

Did you know that you can make a living without a job? In the 21st Century it is very possible to make money in ways which don't require you to get a job! My name is Bob Martin. My book, 49 Ways to Make a Living Without a Job will show you 49 different ways that you can do what I do - make a living without getting tied down by a job! My previous edition of this book was called "49 Ways to Make a Living in the Philippines" because I have lived in the Philippines for many years. I updated all of my ideas, I took out references specifically to the Philippines and made the book completely applicable to a world where people need to make a living, and can do it in non-traditional ways! Start making a good living today, without having to answer to anybody but yourself! You can do it! I know for sure you can, because it is what I have been doing for years! Get all of my secrets when you read the book!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the various minorities living in the island of Cyprus from the early modern (late Venetian and early Ottoman) period down to the present day. It charts their history, with special emphasis on their relations with the powers ruling Cyprus and with the two dominant Christian-Greek and Muslim-Turkish communities. The theme running through the book is that despite being significant members of Cyprus’ society, the three historical minorities (Maronites, Armenians and Latins) were only included in society to a certain extent by the two major communities. This was formalised in the post-independence (1960) period when they were compelled to become members of either dominant community and thus they suffered ‘internal exclusion’ by being regarded as religious sub-groups of one of the two dominant communities rather than national minorities in their own right. Within this general context, the social, legal and political roles, customs, culture and language of the various minorities are examined as they evolved through time and in response to internal and external developments affecting Cyprus in the political, economic and global spheres. They are discussed not as static entities, but as evolving groups that have adapted with greater or lesser degrees of success to the radical and at times painful changes Cyprus has undergone, especially over the last 150 years, in all walks of life. Finally, the question of what the future holds for the minorities of the island in the light of Cyprus’ EU membership and the prospect of reunification are also analysed. This book is a product of the conference “Minorities of Cyprus: Past, Present and Future”, which was held on 24 and 25 November 2007 at the European University Cyprus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Latins, and Armenians have been the primary historical communities that make up the multicultural landscape of Cyprus. However, the continuing conflict between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots has geographically, socially and psychologically segregated these communities, while the influx of economic migrants, especially after Cyprus’s accession to the EU in 2004, has, in turn, contributed to Cyprus’s challenges, arising from multiculturalism, in an altogether different perspective. How has education, over time, addressed and re-examined all these issues introduced by Cyprus’ complex evolving multiculturalism and ethnic diversity? How can education better attend to current problems of coexistence in Cyprus, and what kind of role can it play in a federal re-united country? This collection of essays introduces an innovative and critical examination of these questions in order to provide relevant answers. More specifically, it examines how formal, non-formal and informal education contributed to the creation and perpetuation of the Cyprus conflict, as well as to prejudices, inter-ethnic stereotypes, and misperceptions. The book also discusses how education could contribute to conflict transformation, empathy and peaceful coexistence amongst the different Cypriot communities, and how this has been possible in other multi-ethnic societies. The volume will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers interested in peace education, multiculturalism and conflict transformation.
