Download or read book Fewnomials written by A. G. Khovanskiĭ and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideology of the theory of fewnomials is the following: real varieties defined by "simple", not cumbersome, systems of equations should have a "simple" topology. One of the results of the theory is a real transcendental analogue of the Bezout theorem: for a large class of systems of *k transcendental equations in *k real variables, the number of roots is finite and can be explicitly estimated from above via the "complexity" of the system. A more general result is the construction of a category of real transcendental manifolds that resemble algebraic varieties in their properties. These results give new information on level sets of elementary functions and even on algebraic equations. The topology of geometric objects given via algebraic equations (real-algebraic curves, surfaces, singularities, etc.) quickly becomes more complicated as the degree of the equations increases. It turns out that the complexity of the topology depends not on the degree of the equations but only on the number of monomials appearing in them. This book provides a number of theorems estimating the complexity of the topology of geometric objects via the cumbersomeness of the defining equations. In addition, the author presents a version of the theory of fewnomials based on the model of a dynamical system in the plane. Pfaff equations and Pfaff manifolds are also studied.

Book Synopsis Deterministic and Stochastic Optimal Control by : Wendell H. Fleming
Download or read book Deterministic and Stochastic Optimal Control written by Wendell H. Fleming and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book may be regarded as consisting of two parts. In Chapters I-IV we pre sent what we regard as essential topics in an introduction to deterministic optimal control theory. This material has been used by the authors for one semester graduate-level courses at Brown University and the University of Kentucky. The simplest problem in calculus of variations is taken as the point of departure, in Chapter I. Chapters II, III, and IV deal with necessary conditions for an opti mum, existence and regularity theorems for optimal controls, and the method of dynamic programming. The beginning reader may find it useful first to learn the main results, corollaries, and examples. These tend to be found in the earlier parts of each chapter. We have deliberately postponed some difficult technical proofs to later parts of these chapters. In the second part of the book we give an introduction to stochastic optimal control for Markov diffusion processes. Our treatment follows the dynamic pro gramming method, and depends on the intimate relationship between second order partial differential equations of parabolic type and stochastic differential equations. This relationship is reviewed in Chapter V, which may be read inde pendently of Chapters I-IV. Chapter VI is based to a considerable extent on the authors' work in stochastic control since 1961. It also includes two other topics important for applications, namely, the solution to the stochastic linear regulator and the separation principle.
Book Synopsis Surgery on Simply-Connected Manifolds by : William Browder
Download or read book Surgery on Simply-Connected Manifolds written by William Browder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exposition of the technique of surgery on simply-connected smooth manifolds. Systematic study of differentiable manifolds using these ideas was begun by Milnor [45] and Wallace [68] and developed extensively in the last ten years. It is now possible to give a reasonably complete theory of simply-connected manifolds of dimension ~ 5 using this approach and that is what I will try to begin here. The emphasis has been placed on stating and proving the general results necessary to apply this method in various contexts. In Chapter II, these results are stated, and then applications are given to characterizing the homotopy type of differentiable manifolds and classifying manifolds within a given homotopy type. This theory was first extensively developed in Kervaire and Milnor [34] in the case of homotopy spheres, globalized by S. P. Novikov [49] and the author [6] for closed 1-connected manifolds, and extended to the bounded case by Wall [65] and Golo [23]. The thesis of Sullivan [62] reformed the theory in an elegant way in terms of classifying spaces.

Book Synopsis K-Theory of Finite Groups and Orders by : Richard G. Swan
Download or read book K-Theory of Finite Groups and Orders written by Richard G. Swan and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are from a course given at the University of Chicago. No pretense of completeness is made. A great deal of additional material may be found in Bass' book [BK] which gives a remarkably complete account of algebraic K-theory. The present notes, however, contain a number of recent results of Jacobinski [J] and Roiter [R]. An excellent survey of the theory of orders with detailed references may be found in Reiner's article [RS].

Book Synopsis Analysis and Probability by : Aurel Spataru
Download or read book Analysis and Probability written by Aurel Spataru and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-01-12 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability theory is a rapidly expanding field and is used in many areas of science and technology. Beginning from a basis of abstract analysis, this mathematics book develops the knowledge needed for advanced students to develop a complex understanding of probability. The first part of the book systematically presents concepts and results from analysis before embarking on the study of probability theory. The initial section will also be useful for those interested in topology, measure theory, real analysis and functional analysis. The second part of the book presents the concepts, methodology and fundamental results of probability theory. Exercises are included throughout the text, not just at the end, to teach each concept fully as it is explained, including presentations of interesting extensions of the theory. The complete and detailed nature of the book makes it ideal as a reference book or for self-study in probability and related fields. - Covers a wide range of subjects including f-expansions, Fuk-Nagaev inequalities and Markov triples. - Provides multiple clearly worked exercises with complete proofs. - Guides readers through examples so they can understand and write research papers independently.

Book Synopsis Calculus of Fractions and Homotopy Theory by : Peter Gabriel
Download or read book Calculus of Fractions and Homotopy Theory written by Peter Gabriel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of the present work is to present to the reader a particularly nice category for the study of homotopy, namely the homo topic category (IV). This category is, in fact, - according to Chapter VII and a well-known theorem of J. H. C. WHITEHEAD - equivalent to the category of CW-complexes modulo homotopy, i.e. the category whose objects are spaces of the homotopy type of a CW-complex and whose morphisms are homotopy classes of continuous mappings between such spaces. It is also equivalent (I, 1.3) to a category of fractions of the category of topological spaces modulo homotopy, and to the category of Kan complexes modulo homotopy (IV). In order to define our homotopic category, it appears useful to follow as closely as possible methods which have proved efficacious in homo logical algebra. Our category is thus the" topological" analogue of the derived category of an abelian category (VERDIER). The algebraic machinery upon which this work is essentially based includes the usual grounding in category theory - summarized in the Dictionary - and the theory of categories of fractions which forms the subject of the first chapter of the book. The merely topological machinery reduces to a few properties of Kelley spaces (Chapters I and III). The starting point of our study is the category ,10 Iff of simplicial sets (C.S.S. complexes or semi-simplicial sets in a former terminology).
