Book excerpt: Desmond Child is the ultimate hitmaker, contributing to some of the biggest smash global hits that helped ignite the success of music icons KISS, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Ricky Martin, Katy Perry, and countless others. In Livin’ On A Prayer, he reveals how he climbed his way to the top and beyond amid extraordinary circumstances and shares his very personal and unbelievable journey that shaped him into an artist of international renown. For over half a century, Desmond Child has collaborated with the world’s most celebrated artists creating timeless hits, such as Bon Jovi’s “Livin' On A Prayer” and “You Give Love A Bad Name” as well as Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and “The Cup Of Life” amongst his vast catalog. But in Livin’ On A Prayer, Desmond himself takes center stage to share his transformational story from misfit outsider to cultural pacesetter. In collaboration with legendary music biographer David Ritz, Child recounts his unconventional upbringing as his colorful family fled Cuba in the 1960s and fell into poverty. He details his shocking discovery at age 18 that the man he called “dad” was not his biological father after all, and he courageously bares his soul about navigating the trials of being a Latino gay man in the macho world of rock and roll. His is a story of willing himself to succeed and overcome impossible odds to establish himself as one of the most influential composers and lyricists of all time.

Book excerpt: Living History’s protagonists, Mia and Hugh, encounter a space vehicle that crashed in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest in the ninth century C.E. The problem is: they cannot remember this, when they find themselves in 9,000 B.C.E., where their long journey begins. Aimed at a short time before the crash to prevent the ship from crashing, their time travel is an experimental “shot in the dark,” but the experiment fails. However, as they struggle to stay alive, they are not without resources: the beings, who come to be called “cousins,” have implanted Nano technology in them to maintain their bodies and minds, but also an ability for to communicate without speech. In Mia, they provide a store of limited information, which includes a database of human languages but also information on the location of six research stations from which generations of cousins have monitored human evolution for millennia with periodic expeditions. These stations frame the plot as they learn how to use them while they travel the world interacting with people and cultures through deep time, and come to devise a plan to use their unique situation to prepare for the day when they return to current times to set in motion a series of events to transform radically the course of human history, sending humankind on a quest to recapture its lost kinship with the world that surrounds them. The only obstacle to their plan, besides the obvious hazards of such a long lifespan, is a branch species of humanity that has preyed upon humans for all time, and who have grown in numbers to threaten the very existence for all; blending into the human race in its long migration through time, they have become virtually invisible and wield great power. Mia and Hugh must counter the Kapalna’s growing interest in them in a final sprint to today, and a great awakening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our minds and hearts often exploded with joy as we became immersed in the scenes. At times, we were one with the mystical silence and landscape. "Suddenly, we started climbing and climbing until I felt we couldn't go higher. GERONIMO! I cried yet still we climbed. The road became so narrow and steep that I began to think we might begin to go backward. We down-shifted again. When we crossed Ten Sleep Creek, I peered out my window looking for snow pack. It was summer. Still we climbed, higher and higher. The clouds became bigger-and closer. The blue, bright sky blue...and rich forest green encompassed us. Had we passed over? Were we on the other side? Dreamcatcher downshifted and climbed some more. Dear Lord, if my ears hadn't popped earlier, I would have listened for the choir of angel voices. We passed through Big Horn, Sitting Bull, and climbed higher. The air got thinner, the water became purer, the sun brighter. Still we climbed. There were no people. There was no pollution. There was no barrier between us and God. We climbed higher. The road narrowed. The blue faded into grey. We were in the clouds and heaven bound."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ah, the 80's anthem - "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi - the story of Tommy and Gina: two kids fighting the odds as they just try to give it a shot. In this story, however, Tommy doesn't work on a dock, and Gina doesn't work the diner all day. The thing is, every town has their own Tommy and Gina story. This one just happens to be a little more...unique. The seaside town of York, Maine is the backdrop to this tale, taking you from the 80s to the present day. This is not a Chicken Soup for the Soul type story. But, like soup, it contains many ingredients. Start with a 1/2 pot of Tommy - a Bon Jovi hairband-loving burnout. Add a 1/2 pot of Gina- a dressed-in-black, Cure-loving alterna-chick. Mix in plenty of 80's references then bring to a boil and stir. Add a splash of tragedy with a hint of that could never happen, could it? Sprinkle in a doctor who resembles Christopher Walken and who may or may not be in the mafia. Next, season with a little Mexican sidekick, a tablespoon of tenderness, a splash of a naughty Zumba instructor - at this point the mixture will stiffen. Finally, add three full cups of redemption, true love, and happily ever after! Garnish with yoga pants. In all seriousness, this book is a super-silly comedy, but with a big heart, and although it might be slightly more appreciated if you're from the 80's, it's definitely not a requirement. It's a fun, easy read that will keep you smiling and laughing the whole way though

Some good, many bad, but Tips for Livin’ is unique in the genre, and it is great! The author has a no-BS way of getting to the point. He isn’t a scientist. "“Tips for Livin’” has a concise, no fluff approach to the lived experience and our own hubris. It covers topics from individuality, self development, discipline to relationships and creative momentum. What I found refreshing about the writing style is that it conveys stoicism in a gentle, yet colloquial manner that is applicable to the modern age. If you’re feeling stuck, or overwhelmed, this is definitely worth the read. The author seamlessly distills eastern philosophy through a western lens; offering guidance to all walks of life. Although our paths may become difficult, a little bit of grit and conscientiousness goes a long way. Best enjoyed with a cup of coffee!" - Misty via Amazon.

Book excerpt: Each of us is in the middle of a story. In this astoundingly unique book, bestselling author N.D. Wilson reminds us that to truly live we must recognize that we are dying. Cause of death: life. Death by Living is a poetic exploration of faith, futility, and the incredible joy of this mortal life. N.D. Wilson recounts stories from his life in poetic prose, giving perspective on the life we're given by God. Death by Living explores the topics of family, grappling with the death of loved ones, and how to live with intention to get the most out of our time on Earth. Wilson encourages us to live hard and die grateful, and to see Christ in every pair of eyes. To write a past we won’t regret. All of us must pause and breathe. See the past, see life as the fruit of providence and thousands of personal narratives. We did not choose where to set our feet in time, but we choose where to set them next. We stand in the now. God says create. Live. Choose. Shape the past. Etch your life in stone, and what you make will be forever. In Death by Living, you will: Experience life with renewed wonder Recognize mundane moments as opportunities Learn to live hard and die grateful Recognize death as a gift instead of something to be feared At once inspiring, humorous, and unbelievably moving, this a book that you will read again and again, finding fresh perspective each time you open it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobsters. Big hair. The smelly Turnpike. The poor cousin of its glittering neighbor Manhattan. Could that really be all there is to New Jersey? In Living on the Edge of the World, the best and brightest young writers from the much maligned state answer back with edgy, irreverent pieces of nonfiction paying tribute to New Jersey's unique place in the cultural consciousness. Like a drive along the Garden State Parkway, their stories travel to just about every corner of the state, from Princeton and Hillside to Camden and Hoboken. In "Straight Outta Garwood," Tom Perrotta writes of the near inescapability of returning to his home state again and again in his novels; in "Exit 15W," Joshua Braff tells how all roads led back to the Jersey Girl he'd fallen for as a seventh-grader; Kathleen DeMarco takes a nostalgic look at her grandfather's cranberry bog in "The Family Farm"; Jonathan Ames recounts a failed attempt to consummate his flirtation with a boardwalk beauty in "Rose of the Jersey Shore"; and Frederick Reiken offers an elegy to a high-rise in Fort Lee that opens his eyes to a new, dangerous world. A celebration of all that's weird and wonderful about the Garden State -- including Bruce Springsteen, the Nets, the Jersey Devil, the films of Kevin Smith, and Great Adventure -- Living on the Edge of the World will have New Jerseyans everywhere ready to stand and be counted.
