Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types and Breeds of Farm Animals The need for such a volume as this will no doubt be best expressed by a demand for it on the part of live-stock students. The author, however, desires to call attention to the fact that not since 1888 has a volume devoted to the breeds of horses, cattle, sheep, and swine been published in America. The most recent work devoted to the breeds entirely omitted a considera tion of the horse. Further than this but very few books have thus far been published in the English language that have been strictly breed studies. This book differs somewhat from others that have preceded it. A number of breeds have received recognition for the first time, these being the ass, the mule, the angora and milch goats, all animals of importance in certain localities. The more important or better known breeds have received more detailed considera tion than those which may be regarded as the lesser known, and have been so ranked in the make-up of the book. In numerous instances much new historical information has been gathered. During the past twenty years a great amount of evidence bear ing on breed merit has been secured at the agricultural experi ment stations, at expositions, on race courses, and at fair grounds. In the breed reviews in this work much of this recent evidence is given a place. Brief consideration is also given to some of the more important foundation families or tribes, and to individual animals that have made a deep impression upon the breed. The author has taken the liberty of commenting on the weak as well as on the strong points of the breeds, but this has been done in a nonpartisan spirit, in harmony with the views of capable critics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Animals: Horses, Cows, Sheep, Swine, Goats, Poultry, Etc Horses are required on the farm for saddle purposes, driving and ordinary farm work although on more extensive farms with various lines of industry there may be required some more detailed classifications of their usefulness. Horses are not raised exclusively for farm work, however, and farmers who wish to breed horses for sale must first acquaint themselves with the require ments of the market along this line. In general two t pes of horses are recognized on the market, name y the draft and light types. These two types are essentially different from each other. The draft horse is heavy of body and the length of the body is relatively much shorter than in the light type. The only use of the draft horse is to haul loads of greater or less weight, usually. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeding Farm Animals Several valuable books have been written on the subject of feeding live stock, and those interested have reason to be grateful to the men who wrote them. But the criticism has been made, that some of these are too scientific in their treatment of the subject to meet the needs of the practical feeder, that the discussions in some are so general and diffuse and so lacking in sequence, that the labor involved in securing specific information from them is too great, and that others more specific in their methods of treatment, are helpful chiefly to those only who live in areas where certain leading foodstuffs are abundantly grown. The need, therefore, for something additional on the subject will be at once conceded by those who are familiar with its needs. Those who have thought carefully upon the subject of feeding farm animals will subscribe to the statement, that it is one of the most comprehensive and difficult questions to discuss that pertain to the broad field of agriculture. So comprehensive is it that in the judgment of the author, no single treatise can cover a field so broad with sufficient fulness. An attempt, therefore, will not be made to produce such a book, as it must result in more or less of failure. To cover the whole subject the author has planned, if spared, to write five books, the present being the first of the series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeding of Farm Animals The great interest which is being taken in the feeding of animals and the constant demands which are being made on this Station for information along these lines, has made it imperative for us to issue this Bulletin, setting forth the general principles underlying all animal feeding, together with such data and comments as have seemed most essential for the farmer and stockman. Notwithstanding that the majority of the experiment stations have issued bulletins covering the same Subject, the climatic conditions obtaining in California and the wide difference in our foods from those of the older States render it necessary that this Bulletin be issued to deal more intelligently with the environments peculiar to this State. It has been written in the hope that the student of the college and the farm will not be necessitated to travel the same toilsome road trod den by the author when gathering the information which it contains. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Live Stock of the Farm, Vol. 3: Horses Scotland had a good breed of horses from a very early period. Of the early history of the Clydesdale breed it is difficult to speak with certainty. The writer has dealt at considerable length with this subject elsewhere, and it is hardly necessary here to say more, with respect to the place of origin of the breed, than that the districts of Clydesdale and Avondale would appear to have been the home of its ancestors, if a home is to be found for them anywhere. The draught horse as we know it, is obviously the creation of a much later period than that in which the early Stuart kings are said to have done something to improve the native breed. It is a type which was only evolved after the conditions of the country became favourable to the peaceful art of breeding, and the demand for such a horse arose. The peace following the Revolution settlement of 1689, the Union of 1707, the development of trade, and the making of roads, all these called for a horse that could pull as well as carry, and the type of horse required was produced by the farmers of Clydesdale. The foundation was already there; it is only a question of how this foundation was built upon. Tradition affirms that it was through the introduction of Flemish blood that improvement was first effected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Productive Feeding of Farm Animals The preceding considerations suggest the reasons for the belief held by those familiar with the situation, that the prospects for the livestock industry in this country are very bright. In spite of the high cost of feed and labor and the rise in land values during the last decade, the industry will furnish excellent opportunities for farmers that give their stock good care. But the changed condi tions call for a higher type of farming and stock raising than that followed by the majority of farmers of earlier times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nutrition of Farm Animals The manner in which the subject of the nutrition of farm animals is presented to the student will naturally differ according to the ultimate end in view. If the prime purpose is to impart practical skill in the feeding of live stock, the study of the principles of nutrition is likely to be regarded as preliminary and to partake of the nature of an information course, and chief stress will be laid upon familiarity with the results of experience, particularly as related to the business aspects of the subject, and to the acquisition of practical skill. But while by no means disposed to minimize the significance of this aspect of the subject, the writer is nevertheless convinced that for the students of our agricultural colleges a somewhat different procedure is desirable. He believes that greater emphasis than they sometimes receive may wisely be laid upon the chemical and physiological laws which underlie the practice of feeding, both on account of their intrinsic importance and because the subject may thus be made a real collegiate discipline which shall contribute to the training as well as to the information of the student. Accordingly, the present volume attempts to deal primarily with the natural laws governing the nutrition of farm animals, as distinguished from the broader field of animal husbandry, and only secondarily with the specific details of practice. It seeks to avoid so far as may be mere dogmatic statements, and, although not attempting complete citation of literature even upon important points, to present the experimental evidence with sufficient fullness to indicate something of the limitations of present knowledge and of the opportunities for further investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judging Farm Animals At the present time departments of animal husbandry are features of all American agricultural colleges, and system atic courses in judging farm animals are given, in which laboratory practice is an important feature. Not only this, but thousands of young men have already received instruction in this subject in our colleges, many of whom are now actively engaged in farming, where animal hus bandry is a factor, requiring a knowledge of form and function. In the preparation of this volume, the author has had in view a purpose, rather distinctive in itself, of discussing.
