Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Lives of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence: Intended Principally for the Use of Schools The following work has been compiled principally with a view to its introduction into schools, throughout our country. It was believed by the author, that a general knowledge of the distinguished men, whose names are set to the Declaration of Independence, would at all times be considered as desirable by the young and rising generations of the union. That the names and characters of those persons who risked their lives in defence of their country's rights, liberties, and privileges, and under whose counsels its independence was achieved, and established, should be had in remembrance to the latest period of time, will be acknowledged by all. The history of them which has been published, is too voluminous, and too expensive, for a very large proportion of the community; and altogether inconvenient to be used as a reading book for schools. This publication is fixed at so moderate a price, as to be within the reach of all who may wish to put it into the hands of their children, or to introduce it into their families. As such it is submitted to the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Most know of the importance of the Declaration of Independence, but few know much about its Signers. This book (originally published in 1848 by eminent 19th-century historian, Benson J. Lossing) provides a brief biography of each signer of the Declaration. Accompanied by fifty engravings, these biographies shed light on what Lossing terms, 'the chief events in the lives of the men who stood sponsors at the baptism in blood of our infant republic.' Through this book - long used in American schools - we, too, can discover the private and public virtues of those venerated Americans who helped create the most stable and enviable nation in the world."--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: The fifty-six signers of America's Declaration of Independence risked their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor” to found a new country. In this classic work, Benson J. Lossing describes the lives of each of the founding fathers, their greatest achievements, and what impelled them to take such an incredible risk. While some are well known to us – Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock – much of the pleasure in this book comes from reading about the lesser-known signers, and about the many challenges they faced throughout their lives in the young United States. Appendices contain Thomas Jefferson's original version of the Declaration, an analysis of its grievances, the subsequent Articles of Confederation and US Constitution, and the offending Stamp Act. This ebook edition includes an active table of contents, reflowable text, and 50 period engravings of the faces and signatures of the signers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Presidents of the United States: With Biographical Notices of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence; Sketches of the Most Remarkable Events in the History of the Country In writing the Lives of the Presidents of the United States, it has been difficult to preserve the strict impartiality which the nature of the work requires, and avoid running either into eulogy or abuse. The circumstances of their administration are so recent, that one who has lived through the greater portion of them, and entered into all the excited feelings of party strife, can hardly be supposed capable of divesting himself of prejudices, and passions, however much he may desire to be an honest chronicler of the times. We can only say, that it has been our sincere aim and endeavor to see near events with the eye of a distant spectator, and to anticipate the dispassionate judgment which posterity will pass upon the great men who have administered our Government. The affairs of the last twenty years are yet hardly ripe for the biographer, and the materials for their history are scattered in various directions, and to be drawn from many different sources. That all those sources should be pure, is more than can be expected; but we have uniformly endeavored to resort only to those least exposed to suspicion. For the materials of our work, we owe much obligation to many distinguished writers. To the Lives of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, by a gentleman who has done a great deal for the illustration of American history, we have been much indebted in the course of the volume, and particularly in our summary of their biographies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence, Vol. 7 The great tragic poet of antiquity has observed, and historians and philosophers in every age, have repeated the observation, that no one should be pronounced happy till death has closed the period of human uncertainty. Yet if to be happy, is to descend into the vale of years, loved and honoured; to enjoy in life, that posthumous fame, which is usually bestowed only beyond the tomb; to see the labours of our earlier years, crowned with more than hoped for success; and to find those theoretic visions which untried, could offer nothing more than expected excellence, exceeding in practical utility their promised advantages; if these can confer aught of hap piness on this side the grave, then may the subject of our memoir be esteemed truly happy. He has indeed outlived those who were the partners of his toils, and the companions of his earlier years; but in so doing, he has not experienced the usual fate of mor tality, in outliving the sympathy, the kindness and the love of his fellow creatures. A new race of companions has risen around him, who have added to those feelings the deeper ones of admiration, respect, and gratitude.
