Book Synopsis The Complete Cosmicomics by : Italo Calvino
Download or read book The Complete Cosmicomics written by Italo Calvino and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete collection of “nimble and often hilarious” short stories exploring the cosmos by the acclaimed author of Invisible Cities (Colin Dwyer, NPR). Italo Calvino’s beloved cosmicomics cross planets and traverse galaxies, speed up time or slow it down to the particles of an instant. Through the eyes of a “cosmic know-it-all” with the unpronounceable name of Qfwfq, Calvino explores natural phenomena and tells the story of the origins of the universe. Relating complex scientific and mathematical concepts to our everyday world, they are an indelible and delightful literary achievement. Originally published in Italian in three separate volumes—including the Asti d’Appello Prize-winning first volume, Cosmicomics—these thirty-four dazzling stories are collected here in one definitive English-language anthology. “Trying to describe such a diverse and entertaining mix, I have to admit, just as Calvino does so often, that my words fail here, too. There’s no way I—or anyone, really—can muster enough of them to quite capture the magic of these stories . . . Read this book, please.” —Colin Dwyer, NPR

Book Synopsis Akulmiut Neqait / by : Ann Fienup-Riordan
Download or read book Akulmiut Neqait / written by Ann Fienup-Riordan and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In fall 2014, Calista Education and Culture, Inc. (CEC, formerly Calista Elders Council) began a four-year study funded by the Office of Subsistence Management of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The study focused on whitefish and other non-salmon freshwater fish harvested by residents of the Akulmiut villages of Kasigluk, Nunapitchuk, and Atmautluak, as well as those living along the Kuskokwim River just below Bethel in the villages of Napaskiak, Napakiak, and Oscarville. Harvest studies have been carried out in some of these communities (Ikuta, Brown, and Koester, ed. 2014) as well as two major ethnographic studies--one in Napaskiak (Oswalt 1963) and one in Nunapitchuk (Andrews 1989). Our intended focus was not on harvest amounts but rather traditional knowledge surrounding the harvest and use of the six species of whitefish, as well as pike, burbot, and blackfish, on which people from this area relied so heavily in the past and continue to harvest to this day. In fact, all three contemporary Akulmiut villages, as well as settlements in the past, were established at sites where fish fences were built across the river each fall to intercept whitefish as they migrated out of the lakes and sloughs toward the mainstem of the Kuskokwim River. If there is one food that defines people from this area, it is whitefish."--Provided by publisher.

It is the story of a flight from the invading Russian Army that started in a small town in the former Free State of Danzig and ended in a small village near Hanover. A flight that began by horse drawn wagon trying to cross the Weichsel river to out-run the Russian steamroller. After ten days on the road filled with refugees from the eastern parts of Germany, a rail road station was reached and the journey continued by train. Stops were made on the way until the Russian army again was in striking distance and a new journey began. In a small village in the Province of Schleswig-Holstein news of the German capitulation was received. One more trip was required to join part of the family. Once they arrived at their final destination a nine month odyssey was over. The family was partially united again.

Book Synopsis The Healing I Took Birth For by : Ondrea Levine
Download or read book The Healing I Took Birth For written by Ondrea Levine and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 32 years, Stephen and Ondrea Levine have provided emotional and spiritual support to those who face life-threatening illness and their caregivers; deeply affecting hundreds of thousands of people in the process. The Healing I Took Birth For, which was begun after Ondrea’s own medical prognosis that foretold the end of a lifetime of spiritual exploration, is the culmination of her work. Their collaboration, in the service of the dying, especially during the height of the AIDS epidemic, set them both more deeply on the path of compassion—compassion for self, for others, for all. The Healing I Took Birth For is the heartfelt sharing of Ondrea’s life of service and a deeply inspiring example of how one faces illness and great personal difficulties, with a deep spiritual practice and grace. It is the most “intimate collaboration” she and Stephen have worked on and it will inspire readers to find their own way toward living a life of compassion.
