Book excerpt: In first grade, twins Alexis and Adam wrote down what they wanted to be when they grew up and put it in their teacher’s time capsule. Now entering their senior year in high school, they are surprised to find out what they wrote: Alexis wanted to “help people” and Adam wanted to be a fireman. But that was before Adam got sick and their family fell apart. Adam’s leukemia is now in remission but, sadly, so is the twins’ family. Their mother and father are always working—not only don’t they have time for Alexis and Adam, they don’t have time for each other. Alexis can’t even convince them to take a weekend off for one last family vacation to Disney World. No one is prepared when Adam gets sick again, but this time Alexis is not alone. Adam’s illness reunites the family. And Alexis discovers that the time capsule predictions weren’t so far off the mark.

Book excerpt: A brilliant, kaleidoscopic narrative of Oklahoma City—a great American story of civics, basketball, and destiny, from award-winning journalist Sam Anderson NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • NPR • Chicago Tribune • San Francisco Chronicle • The Economist • Deadspin Oklahoma City was born from chaos. It was founded in a bizarre but momentous “Land Run” in 1889, when thousands of people lined up along the borders of Oklahoma Territory and rushed in at noon to stake their claims. Since then, it has been a city torn between the wild energy that drives its outsized ambitions, and the forces of order that seek sustainable progress. Nowhere was this dynamic better realized than in the drama of the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team’s 2012-13 season, when the Thunder’s brilliant general manager, Sam Presti, ignited a firestorm by trading future superstar James Harden just days before the first game. Presti’s all-in gamble on “the Process”—the patient, methodical management style that dictated the trade as the team’s best hope for long-term greatness—kicked off a pivotal year in the city’s history, one that would include pitched battles over urban planning, a series of cataclysmic tornadoes, and the frenzied hope that an NBA championship might finally deliver the glory of which the city had always dreamed. Boom Town announces the arrival of an exciting literary voice. Sam Anderson, former book critic for New York magazine and now a staff writer at the New York Times magazine, unfolds an idiosyncratic mix of American history, sports reporting, urban studies, gonzo memoir, and much more to tell the strange but compelling story of an American city whose unique mix of geography and history make it a fascinating microcosm of the democratic experiment. Filled with characters ranging from NBA superstars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook; to Flaming Lips oddball frontman Wayne Coyne; to legendary Great Plains meteorologist Gary England; to Stanley Draper, Oklahoma City's would-be Robert Moses; to civil rights activist Clara Luper; to the citizens and public servants who survived the notorious 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building, Boom Town offers a remarkable look at the urban tapestry woven from control and chaos, sports and civics.

After much thought has gone into it, Gracie decides she is going to leave behind a diary. This diary will be filled with the most important moments that occurred in Gracie's life. She also hopes that this diary will be used to teach others that people with Autism can do anything people born without Autism can do. They just might have to do things slightly differently. She knows that it won't be easy for a diary to help change how the world sees people with autism, but she is hoping that it can try.

Book excerpt: I m just searching for myself in a little time capsule that remodels itself with each spring that passes by, and I know I m buried with questions that outnumber the answers, but I can t find myself the further I dig. Devonte. My first poetry collection Little Time Capsule captures the most self-reflecting and introspective poetic moments of my young adulthood. In weeding through my old journals and napkin scribbles and online posts to gather enough material for this book, I put together a compilation that I m hoping will make people smile and want to re-read over and over again. Within these pages are twenty-three unique poems delving into everything from my father s sudden passing to my struggles accepting myself as an LGBT youth and much more. I began writing in the eighth grade after our teacher asked my class to create a poem using our vocabulary words for that week. No one volunteered to read his to the class, so I did mine and got a good reaction. I never forgot how it felt the first time I strung words together to create what sounded like music in my head. I like cleverness and flashiness to poetry. I like writing in different styles. I love the challenge of wowing an audience and giving myself something cool to read later on. The poetry in Little Time Capsule was written over a span of nearly 10 years, roughly from 2003 to 2013 with the earliest poem being It, my personal favorite out of this bunch and the latest being Crystal Compass, which best depicts my state of mine before I decided to publish. I narrowed down the list of chosen poems from 139 to just 23. That was hard to do considering some of my poems stuck with me for years before I no longer felt comfortable reciting them. My beliefs tend to change over time as I mature, so something I said when I was 15 may turn out to be something I cringe at when I m 23. I feel it was best to publish these precious poems before I grew any further, hence the title of this book. I ve placed these poems in a time capsule for me to unearth later in life, for me to look back on and maybe share with future loved ones and the world. Here s a little about me: I was born in Chicago in 1989 to parents Claudette and Avery but spent my coming of age years in Meridian, MS. I love maintaining long term friendships and spending time with my beloved grandmother Lee who helped put me through college. Devonte is the recipient of the Winifred Farrar Award for English and also the Earl Love Guyton Scholarship which is awarded for showing promise in the field of communication (demonstrated) through a portfolio. In 2007 he won first place in the Meridian Community College Literary Review for poetry with the poem Twisting My Tongue in Pig-Latin and earned his bachelor s degree in communication from Mississippi State University in 2012.

Book excerpt: Art and science collaborate on a fascinating story with extraordinary images in a highly-acclaimed book. Seeds, the most complex organs produced by plants, ensure the biodiversity of our planet. They vary from the impressive Seychelles nut that weighs twenty kilos to the dust-like seeds of the orchids. Some wait for hundreds of years to find the right place and time for germination after travelling thousands of kilometres or just a few centimetres. The evolution of their highly sophisticated structures from prehistoric times to today makes fascinating reading as do the wiles plants use to attract and deceive their chosen pollinators. The extraordinary images that accompany this story provide an unprecedented presentation of the magnificent diversity of seeds in all their exquisite beauty and sophistication. Fruits are the keepers of the precious seeds that ensure our future; some are edible, others inedible and many, quite simply, incredible.

Book excerpt: Wear just 33 items for 3 months and get back all the JOY you were missing while you were worrying what to wear. In Project 333, minimalist expert and author of Soulful Simplicity Courtney Carver takes a new approach to living simply--starting with your wardrobe. Project 333 promises that not only can you survive with just 33 items in your closet for 3 months, but you'll thrive just like the thousands of woman who have taken on the challenge and never looked back. Let the de-cluttering begin! Ever ask yourself how many of the items in your closet you actually wear? In search of a way to pare down on her expensive shopping habit, consistent lack of satisfaction with her purchases, and ever-growing closet, Carver created Project 333. In this book, she guides readers through their closets item-by-item, sifting through all the emotional baggage associated with those oh-so strappy high-heel sandals that cost a fortune but destroy your feet every time you walk more than a few steps to that extensive collection of never-worn little black dresses, to locate the items that actually look and feel like you. As Carver reveals in this book, once we finally release ourselves from the cyclical nature of consumerism and focus less on our shoes and more on our self-care, we not only look great we feel great-- and we can see a clear path to make other important changes in our lives that reach far beyond our closets. With tips, solutions, and a closet-full of inspiration, this life-changing minimalist manual shows readers that we are so much more than what we wear, and that who we are and what we have is so much more than enough.

Book excerpt: Three thrilling tales from one of the masters of frontier fiction! In “Paradise Al," Brand tells the first of two stories about Paradise Al, a drifter and rambler who has been riding the rails when he jumps off a passenger train just outside of town. He's caught and thrown in jail, but his resemblance to the Pendletons, a local family, gets him out. Suddenly Al is caught in the middle of the Pendletons' long-standing feud with the Draytons, another local clan that has a wild, untamed stallion and has boasted it will give the horse to anyone who can ride him. Paradise Al, clearly a novice when it comes to horses, takes up the challenge, with two conditions: he gets to keep the horse on the Pendleton Ranch for a week and he gets to marry young Molly Drayton. “Paradise Al's Confession" is another chapter in the saga of Paradise Al, masquerading as Al Pendleton. He's now planning on marrying Molly Drayton and is busy at work starting up a ranch when an...

This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This journal deepens the grandfather/grandchild bond while creating a keepsake for when conversation is no longer possible. With journaling questions for a grandfather to answer that include: "If you could give your eighteen-year-old self a piece of advice, what would it be?" "What are your favorite parts of being a grandfather?" "If you could choose your last words to me, what would they be?" These questions will transport you from the daily routine into a time when the ordinary has been rendered sacred. Whether you're a grandfather looking to leave a legacy to your grandchild, or a grandchild recording memories of your grandpa, make time for the questions you'll later wish you asked: your future self will thank you. Commonly asked questions: Who is this journal for? The journal provides over 100 questions for a grandfather to answer for his grandchild. It makes a perfect gift for the first-time grandpa of a new baby, keepsake gift for an aging grandfather, and thoughtful present for grandparents of all stages in between. Some adult grandchildren sit with their grandparents and fill out the journal while asking the questions: this invites thoughtful conversations, generational connection, and intimacy. Others choose to purchase the journal for themselves, fill it out, and later present it as a gift to their grandchildren. This journal is also a thoughtful gift for adult children whose father may be struggling with early signs of memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer's; asking these questions can jog a parent's memory, inspire thoughtful conversation, or simply provide a space to appreciate the grandfather who still remains. What if I have multiple grandchildren? Do I need multiple journals? Most of the questions in this journal are about grandpa personally, but there are also questions particular to each grandchild. For this reason, most grandfathers choose to have one journal for each grandchild; this also eliminates the need to "choose" who eventually receives the journal. However, it's also possible to answer these particular questions separately for each grandchild within one journal.
