Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly two hundred years, Floridians have eagerly exploited tourism as the key to economic prosperity. As a result, the state has constantly reshaped and remodeled itself as different types of tourist heavens, and many aspects of its history have become inseparable from the fantastic images created by the tourism industry. From spa retreats to nature preserves, from riverboat rides to roller coasters, and from railroads to theme parks, the state’s dependence on tourism has greatly shaped its identity. Sunshine Paradise is the first book to focus exclusively on how--and why--tourism came to define Florida. Offering a concise look at the subject from the 1820s to the present, Tracy Revels demonstrates tourism’s relevance to all other major aspects of Florida history, including the Civil War, the land boom, and civil rights. In this enjoyable and well-written history, Revels shows how Florida’s tourism industry has remained adaptive and expansive, ready to sell the next version of paradise to northerners hungry for sunshine. She also explains why the state’s business and political leaders must consider the history of tourism development as they plan for the state’s future. A volume in the Florida History and Culture Series, edited by Raymond Arsenault and Gary R. Mormino

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida Historical Society Rembert Patrick Award Florida Book Awards, Silver Medal for Florida Nonfiction Countering the conventional narrative that Florida’s tourism industry suffered during the Great Depression, this book shows that the 1930s were, in reality, the starting point for much that characterizes modern Florida’s tourism. David Nelson argues that state and federal government programs designed to reboot the economy during this decade are crucial to understanding the state today. Nelson examines the impact of three connected initiatives—the federal New Deal, its Civilian Conservation Corps program (CCC), and the CCC’s creation of the Florida Park Service. He reveals that the CCC designed state parks to reinforce the popular image of Florida as a tropical, exotic, and safe paradise. The CCC often removed native flora and fauna, introduced exotic species, and created artificial landscapes that were then presented as natural. Nelson discusses how Florida business leaders benefitted from federally funded development and the ways residents and business owners rejected or supported the commercialization and shifting cultural identity of their state. A detailed look at a unique era in which the state government sponsored the tourism industry, helped commodify natural resources, and boosted mythical ideas of the “Real Florida” that endure today, this book makes the case that the creation of the Florida Park Service is the story of modern Florida.

Book excerpt: Today, we're familiar with the major theme parks which charge families hundreds of dollars a day to wait in line for moments of thrills on technologically amazing rides. Florida, however, has been drawing tourists for centuries with simpler attractions which cost much less to view the animals or exhibits, or commune with nature. In Historic Photos of Florida Early Tourist Attractions, Steve Rajtar brings us back to the simpler ways early visitors enjoyed their time in the Sunshine State. Tour the state with photos of the tourist attractions which were here before Walt Disney World, in the days when a row of antique cars sufficed and tourists did not require constant action. See the wax figures which amazed visitors long before the invention of audioanimatronic mannequins. See what curiosities brought in the tourists and their dollars decades before today's theme parks dominated the billboards and themselves became worldwide vacation destinations.

Book excerpt: Everything Florida Dreamers (or the Merely Curious) Need to Know about the Sunshine Mega-State If you're thinking about moving to Florida, or maybe you're just looking for a warm, sunny spot to get away from the ice and snow, or even if you're only curious about what's going on down here in America's only subtropical mega-state, you should read this book. It will give you an entertaining and informative explanation, from an economist's perspective, of why Florida has become the nation's 3rd most populous state, and of the challenges that lie ahead. As a bonus, the Kindle version of Florida Dreams has been written and designed specifically for the Kindle, and is chock full of intriguing hyperlinks, shedding even more light on all things Florida. The amazing rise of the Florida economy, and its emergence as a mega-state with the country's 4th largest economy, is the main theme of Florida Dreams. The secret to Florida's success, besides the climate, is the limited-government, low-tax, business-friendly environment and policies that have been in effect for years under both Republican and Democratic governments. This is in sharp contrast to what has been going on in the other two high-tax, big-government mega-states, California, and New York, as is amply revealed by many interstate comparisons. The in-migration of retirees from the north and the immigration of Hispanics from Latin America, especially Cuba, are the main source of Florida's population growth. Retirees, Hispanics, African-Americans and Indians are all making unique contributions to the Florida economy. Florida Dreams chronicles what they're doing and how they're faring. The state's two best known cities, Miami, and Orlando are being shaped differently by new Floridians, as well as tourists and snowbirds. Each has its own story and distinct flavor. Miami has become the unofficial capital of Latin America since the arrival of Cubans fleeing Castro. Orlando has been transformed by Disney into a giant theme park drawing tourists from all over the world. Even "The Villages," Florida's playground for seniors, has its own winning story. The resumption of space exploration back to the moon and on to Mars from Cape Canaveral is a very exciting development for Florida. It promises to reinvigorate NASA, spark an expansion of aerospace industries on the Space Coast, and bring more tourists to the Kennedy Space Center. The real estate meltdown from 2006-2012, which traumatized Floridians, is over and a solid recovery is in progress. Some mega-development projects, like the American Dream Mall in Miami and the Tampa Waterfront, are getting underway and will contribute greatly to a resurgence of construction. Tourism, aviation, aeronautics and defense, financial services, real estate, construction, transportation, energy, food processing, and agriculture are the backbone of the Florida economy. Companies like Disney, Lockheed Martin, Publix, NextEra Energy, and Carnival Cruise Lines are all innovative industry leaders. But agriculture is in decline. Oranges and citrus have been hard hit by hurricanes and citrus greening. Big Sugar is dependent on government support for its survival and is situated in an environmentally fragile zone, near what remains of the Everglades. Environmental challenges, like the red tide, global warming, sea level rise, and hurricanes, threaten the rise of Florida. Our precious ecological treasure, the Everglades, is in the crosshairs. The national political conundrum every election is whether Florida will be a red or a blue state. The 2018 mid-term election results provide fresh insight into this always controversial question. If these snippets pique your Florida Dreams, you are just a click away from the full scoop.

The state of Florida is known for having the shortest donkey in the history of the globe. KneeHi, who was born in October of 2007, has the record for being the shortest donkey at 64.2 centimeters. The animal is owned by James, Frankie, and Ryan Lee from the United States of America, and it received a ranking at the Best Friends Farm in Gainesville, Florida. The brown jack was measured on July 26, 2011, using particular measurement techniques, and Guinness declared the donkey to be the shortest jack in the world as a result of these measurements. On June 1, 2013, the team at Ceviche Tapas Bar & Restaurant in Tampa, Florida, achieved a world record in front of more than 700 individuals who were present to watch the accomplishment. They used a pitcher that was 9 feet tall to produce the largest pitcher of sangria ever made. Not only did the endeavor win them the record-breaking punch, but they were also nice enough to offer the punch as part of an all-you-can-drink display for all of the attendees. On December 08, 2018, Adam Sandel from Orlando, Florida, achieved a world record for his astounding feat of strength, which earned him the title of the world record holder. His record is 68 pull-ups in one minute, which he accomplished with ease. It's interesting to note that Adam has already held the same world record three times. Each year, the states of Florida and California cultivate between 30,000 and 40,000 acres of fresh market tomatoes, which accounts for approximately two-thirds of the total tomato acreage in the United States. The state of Florida is the second-largest producer of tomatoes in the United States. The sand that people sunbathe on along the beaches of Florida is not the sand that was originally there. The lovely, flawless sand that can be found along the coast was brought here from beaches in the Caribbean. In addition, the state of Florida invests multiple millions of dollars each year to replenish the sand on its beaches with high-quality material. The territory that is now known as Florida was given its name after the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon made initial contact with the country on April 2, 1513. The explorer gave the region the name "La Florida," which translates to "country of flowers." And many, Many More! Get a copy of this Book for your enjoyment. Click the buy button now. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A witty history of the state that's always in the news, for everything from alligator attacks to zany crimes. There's an old clip of Bugs Bunny sawing the entire state of Florida off the continent—and every single time a news story springs up about some shenanigans in Florida, someone on the internet posts it in response. Why are we so ready to wave goodbye to the Sunshine State? In A Florida State of Mind: An Unnatural History of Our Weirdest State, James D. Wright makes the case that there are plenty of reasons to be scandalized by the land and its sometimes-kooky, sometimes-terrifying denizens, but there's also plenty of room for hilarity. Florida didn't just become weird; it's built that way. Uncharted swampland doesn't easily give way to sprawling suburbia. It took violent colonization, land scams to trick non-Floridians into buying undeveloped property, and the development of railroads to benefit one man's hotel empire. Even the most natural parts of Florida are unnatural. Florida citrus? Not from here, but from China. Gators? Oh, they're from Florida all right, but that doesn't make having 1 per every 20 humans normal. Animals...in the form of roadkill? Only Florida allows you to keep anything you kill on the road (and anything you find). Yet everyone loves Florida: tourists come in droves, and people relocate to Florida constantly (only 36% of residents were born there). Crammed with unforgettable stories and facts, Florida will show readers exactly why.
