Book excerpt: Catharine Parr Traill, nee Strickland (1802-1899) was a British author who wrote about life as a settler in Canada. Traill began writing children's books in 1818. She described her new life in Canada in letters and journals and collected these into The Backwoods of Canada (1836), which continues to be read as an important source of information about early Canada. More observations were included in a novel, Canadian Crusoes (1851) which was retitled Lost in the Backwoods. She also published The Female Emigrant's Guide (1854), later retitled The Canadian Settler's Guide, about the ability of emigrants to settle down in a new place. Catharine spent her years in Belleville writing about the natural environment. She often sketched the plant life of Upper Canada, publishing Canadian Wild Flowers (1865) and Studies of Plant Life in Canada (1885). She died in Ontario in 1899.

Come here, and tell me what is the matter with you.”Alfred slowly advanced towards his mother, and wiped away his tears with her apron. Alfred was but a little boy, or he would not have cried for such a simple thing as he did.“Well, Alfred, and what is it?” asked his kind mamma.“Why, mamma, you know that nice plum cake you gave me for saying my lesson well; I had put it in the cupboard, as I did not want to eat it then, and I came just now to take a little nibble at it; and when I opened the closet-door to look for it, there was an ugly brown mouse in the closet, and hardly a scrap of my cake left; that greedy thing had eaten it all but a few crumbs.” And here Alfred's tears flowed afresh.“I am very sorry, my dear child, that the mouse has eaten your cake; but still, I do not think it 6 was worth shedding so many tears about: you must learn to bear such trifling disappointments with more patience. I dare say, the mouse has eaten my sugar and cake, but I shall not cry if it has.”

Book excerpt: In The Backwoods of Canada and The Canadian Settler's Guide, Catherine Parr Traill described a pioneer woman's role on the Ontario frontier, presenting an idealized portrait of the Canadian woman pioneer in the mid-nineteenth century. By transposing this figure into fiction, Traill managed to create what was, in effect, a new fictional character type: the pioneer woman.

Book excerpt: Ever since the first exploratory expeditions in the early modern period, North America has epitomized to Europeans a promise and the hope for the fulfilment of great expectations, be it of more freedom, greater wealth, social liberation or religious tolerance. While numerous features in this dialogic intercontinental relationship will hold true for North America in its entirety, the vast northern territories which we know as Canada today began to emerge early on as a specific iconic location in European mind-maps, and they definitely acquired a distinctive profile after the formation of the USA. As a rich source of cultural exchange and an important partner in political and economic cooperation Canada has come to occupy an important position in the cultural discourses of many European nations. It is these refractions and images of Canada which this volume thoroughly explores in European literature and culture. The contributions include literature, philosophy, language, life-writing and the concept of 'Heimat' (homeland) as well as the cultural impact of the World Wars. While there is an emphasis on literary texts, other fields of cultural representation are also included.
