Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrocorrosion and Protection of Metals, Second Edition, compiles theoretical and practical information, outlines the specific problem, and presents the available solutions related to corrosion by external currents. Basic data on the behavior of different metals under the attack of anodic, cathodic, direct and alternating currents is considered, as are the problems of electrocorrosion—from the identification of corrosion damage and detection of the external current sources, to the selection of optimal means and methods of mitigation, monitoring and protection of different metallic structures and structures of reinforced concrete. This book includes comprehensive information and provides necessary links to more detailed, original sources, thus enabling users to solve either general or particular problems of electrocorrosion and protection of metals. Provides a comprehensive listing of all possible sources of external currents which attack metallic equipment, piping and other metallic structures Outlines the sources of corrosion damage for fast and reliable analysis Provides technical examples and case studies related to electrocorrosion Presents new data and methods of electrocorrosion control and monitoring using computerized techniques and technologies Includes original methods—only considered in this publication—of metals protection against electrocorrosion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underground pipelines transporting liquid petroleum products and natural gas are critical components of civil infrastructure, making corrosion prevention an essential part of asset-protection strategy. Underground Pipeline Corrosion provides a basic understanding of the problems associated with corrosion detection and mitigation, and of the state of the art in corrosion prevention. The topics covered in part one include: basic principles for corrosion in underground pipelines, AC-induced corrosion of underground pipelines, significance of corrosion in onshore oil and gas pipelines, numerical simulations for cathodic protection of pipelines, and use of corrosion inhibitors in managing corrosion in underground pipelines. The methods described in part two for detecting corrosion in underground pipelines include: magnetic flux leakage, close interval potential surveys (CIS/CIPS), Pearson surveys, in-line inspection, and use of both electrochemical and optical probes. While the emphasis is on pipelines transporting fossil fuels, the concepts apply as well to metallic pipes for delivery of water and other liquids. Underground Pipeline Corrosion is a comprehensive resource for corrosion, materials, chemical, petroleum, and civil engineers constructing or managing both onshore and offshore pipeline assets; professionals in steel and coating companies; and academic researchers and professors with an interest in corrosion and pipeline engineering. Reviews the causes and considers the detection and prevention of corrosion to underground pipes Addresses a lack of current, readily available information on the subject Case studies demonstrate how corrosion is managed in the underground pipeline industry

Book excerpt: Oil and natural gas pipelines are essential to the transport of energy materials, but construction of these pipelines commonly causes major disturbance to ecosystems. Due to variability in pipeline installation practices and environments, drawing consensus about how pipeline installations typically impact agricultural ecosystems has been challenging. Here, we conducted a systematic literature review and quantitative analysis of current pipeline studies to determine the magnitude of soil and vegetative responses to pipeline installation and found detrimental impacts to both soil and vegetation variables, including compaction, aggregate stability, and plant biomass. However, best management practices and remediation timeframes vary between studies. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine impacts of pipeline installation on Ohio soil and crop characteristics after a 4- to 5-year remediation period across three independent pipeline installations: the Rover, Utopia, and Nexus pipelines. We performed a 2-year on-farm study in 2020 and 2021 over 29 sites in 8 Ohio counties, directly comparing right-of-way (ROW) and adjacent, unaffected areas (ADJ) of the same agricultural fields. Soil physical, chemical, and biological properties were evaluated, as well as yield and stand counts for field corn, corn silage, and soybean. Detrimental impacts to soil physical characteristics which occurred during pipeline installation persisted through this study period, while variable impacts to soil chemical properties were observed on an individual iii site basis. Finally, satellite image-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used to analyze if ROW versus ADJ differences in agricultural crop yields can be evaluated in a less time- and labor-intensive process compared with traditional on-farm sampling methods. Various soil and yield metrics show that degradation of agricultural land persists past the 4- to 5-year remediation period suggested by pipeline companies.

Book excerpt: This book provides the most up-to-date, advanced methods and tools for risk assessment of onshore pipelines. These methods and tools are based primarily on information collected from ILI measurements and additional information about the soil surrounding the pipeline. The book provides a better understanding how the defects grow and interact (repulsion or attraction) and their spatial variability. In addition, the authors contemplate new defects that evolve between inspections and how they could affect the pipeline's reliability. A real-world case is presented to reinforce the concepts presented in the book. The book is structured into three parts: i) an introduction to onshore pipelines and the problem of corrosion, ii) a framework that deals with uncertainty for integrity programs for corroded pipelines, and iii) the applications of the methods presented in the book. The book is ideal for researchers and field engineers in oil and gas transportation and graduate and undergraduate engineering students interested in pipeline reliability assessments, spatial variability, and risk-based inspections.
