Book excerpt: The present book covers topics both on fluvial and lagoon morphodynamics. The first part is dedicated to tidal environments. Topics include an overview of main morphological features and mechanisms of estuaries and tidal channels and a model devoted to investigate flow field pattern and bed topography in tidal meandering channels and a comparison with recent observational evidence of meanders within different tidal environments. The general failure of Bagnold hypothesis when applied to equilibrium bedload transport at even relatively modest transverse slope is demonstrated. A new model is then proposed based on an empirical entrainment formulation of bed grains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the state of the art in digital scholarly editing. Drawing together the work of established and emerging researchers, it gives pause at a crucial moment in the history of technology in order to offer a sustained reflection on the practices involved in producing, editing and reading digital scholarly editions—and the theories that underpin them. The unrelenting progress of computer technology has changed the nature of textual scholarship at the most fundamental level: the way editors and scholars work, the tools they use to do such work and the research questions they attempt to answer have all been affected. Each of the essays in Digital Scholarly Editing approaches these changes with a different methodological consideration in mind. Together, they make a compelling case for re-evaluating the foundation of the discipline—one that tests its assertions against manuscripts and printed works from across literary history, and the globe. The sheer breadth of Digital Scholarly Editing, along with its successful integration of theory and practice, help redefine a rapidly-changing field, as its firm grounding and future-looking ambit ensure the work will be an indispensable starting point for further scholarship. This collection is essential reading for editors, scholars, students and readers who are invested in the future of textual scholarship and the digital humanities.

However - this volume contends -, it is only in the light of the current radical media change labeled ›digital turn‹ that the material and technological prerequisites of the theory and practice of philology become fully visible. The seventeen studies by scholars from the universities of Budapest and Cologne assembled here investigate these recent transformations of our techniques of writing and reading by critically examining core approaches to the history and epistemology of the humanities. Thus, a broad praxeological overview of basic cultural techniques of collective memory is unfolded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2006, an international conference was organised in Arezzo, Italy, "to discuss the principles and purposes of the critical edition produced with the support of humanities computing tools and methods". With Digital philology and medieval texts, editors Arianna Ciula and Francesco Stella have published a multi-lingual selection of the conference proceedings, bringing together ten papers in Italian, four in English and one in French. The book comes with a CD-ROM, containing all papers as PDF files, presentation slides of a selection of published papers and, in addition, of unpublished papers by Kevin Kiernan ("Using the EPPT to build image-based editions of Old English texts"), Paul Spence and Harold Short ("Beyond the digital edition"), and Arianna Ciula ("Illustrazione di progetti di paleografia digitale: relazione tra testo e immagine"). Furthermore, the CD-ROM provides additional material from Ferrarini's and Hagel's contributions. Although quite helpful in illustrating their papers, these add-ons are not accessible via the index file of the CD-ROM and are therefore a bit tricky to locate. -- Digital Medievalist.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative monograph focuses on a contemporary form of computer-based literature called 'literary hypertext', a digital, interactive, communicative form of new media writing. Canonizing Hypertext combines theoretical and hermeneutic investigations with empirical research into the motivational and pedagogic possibilities of this form of literature. It focuses on key questions for literary scholars and teachers: How can literature be taught in such a way as to make it relevant for an increasingly hypermedia-oriented readership? How can the rapidly evolving new media be integrated into curricula that still seek to transmit 'traditional' literary competence? How can the notion of literary competence be broadened to take into account these current trends? This study, which argues for hypertext's integration in the literary canon, offers a critical overview of developments in hypertext theory, an exemplary hypertext canon and an evaluation of possible classroom applications.

Dieser Band stellt sich der Gegenstandsbestimmung von >LiteraturEnglish Description: Right from the beginning literary studies have been concerned with the definition of their specific subject of analysis as well as with the reevaluation of their particular position within the sciences in general. In this respect literary studies are bound to work interdisciplinarily. Over the last few years the scientific community has predominately put its focus on concepts such as culture and media and has therefore formulated transdisciplinary demands. This has led to an unprecedented number of interdisciplinary approaches, which have provided the humanities with a wide range of new topics. The various branches of literary studies are to be understood as textual sciences that work within the wider context of other systems and media. By this means they react to epistemological changes that have taken place since the second half of the 20th century. Without doubt interdisciplinarity as well as the coexistence of a variety of methods/methodologies and new theoretical approaches have led to a number of new fields of research to which literary studies can provide cognitively productive contributions. The collection of essays tries to investigate the subject literature within the context of new concepts of art and within its theoretical potentials and at the same time discusses the capacity of literary studies and their theories within the context of modern society.
