Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of typology in the study of early modern literature has long been accepted, yet students of Victorian culture have paid little attention to it. First published in 1980, this study demonstrates how biblical typology, an apparently arcane interpretative mode, had profound effects on the secular culture of the Victorian age: its art, literature and thought. George Landow considers the way in which the average English believer learned to read their Bible in terms of the types and shadows of Christ, the various ways in which Victorian poetry and hymns employed certain imagery, and the use of typological symbolism in narrative poetry, prose fiction, dramatic monologue and non-fiction. In a concluding chapter, he investigates the particularly complex, and often ironic, combinations of typological image and typological structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enlarged edition of The Lion and The Lamb: Figuralism and Fulfillment in the Bible, Art, and Literature Beginning with Northrop Frye's discussion of biblical typology--the understanding of the Old Testament as a source of anticipation of the New Testament--Tibor Fabiny develops his hermeneutical discussion using the insights of reader-response criticism in a wholly original way. His approach to biblical typology is both comprehensive and interdisciplinary, using material from literature and the visual arts in the Christian tradition. He moves from a discussion of the Bible to examples of typology in medieval art and literature and finally to the drama of Shakespeare and T. S. Elliot in Murder in the Cathedral.

What is relationship between form and content? And what dictates the shifts in literary fashions and tastes? In answering these questions, the book examines texts by a wide range of modern novelists and poets, including James Joyce, T.S.Eliot, Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett and Philip Larkin, and draws on the work of literary theorists from Roman Jakobson to Roland Barthes. Written in Lodge's typically accessible style this is essential reading for students and lovers of literature at any level. The Bloomsbury Revelations edition includes a new Foreword/Afterword by the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biblical type is a person, place, or thing in salvation history that corresponds to a later person, place, or thing in the scriptural text. An allegory is a passage that says one thing in order to say something else. Both are common literary devices in the Bible that are vital for understanding truths about Jesus Christ found nowhere else. In 40 Questions About Typology and Allegory, Mitchell Chase provides a thorough introduction to both devices, showing where they appear throughout Scripture and the historical roles they have played in biblical interpretation. In a convenient question-and-answer format, Chase answers key questions such as: Why should interpreters care about typology and allegory? How do we identify types? What are the theological assumptions of typology? Do all types lead to Christ? What is allegorical interpretation? How was allegory practiced in the early church? How should we practice allegorical interpretation? Situating typology and allegory within salvation history, Chase shows how these devices reveal the interconnectedness of Scripture and commonly overlooked aspects of Christ's person and work. Scholars, Bible teachers, and preachers will find this an essential resource for interpreting Scripture more comprehensively. --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis traces changes in the use of typology in American literature from the Puritans through the twentieth century of American literature. In particular, this project takes a closer look at major works of John Winthrop, Mary Rowlandson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville in order to investigate how typology was employed by each of them and develops into modern symbolism. This thesis documents some stages in the origins of symbolism and its usage in American literature as the latter increasingly proclaimed stylistic independence from European intellectual traditions and became a highly admired form in literature. I show how religious typology in the Puritan times developed into aesthetics, for example use of symbolism, over the nineteenth century and culminating in Melville's masterpiece Moby Dick. I investigate when typology was used, in what context, and for which purpose. To do so, I use extensive secondary research in addition to close readings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From celebrated translator of the Hebrew Bible Robert Alter, the "groundbreaking" (Los Angeles Times) book that explores the Bible as literature, a winner of the National Jewish Book Award. Renowned critic and translator Robert Alter's The Art of Biblical Narrative has radically expanded our view of the Bible by recasting it as a work of literary art deserving studied criticism. In this seminal work, Alter describes how the Hebrew Bible's many authors used innovative literary styles and devices such as parallelism, contrastive dialogue, and narrative tempo to tell one of the most revolutionary stories of all time: the revelation of a single God. In so doing, Alter shows, these writers reshaped not only history, but also the art of storytelling itself.
