Book Synopsis The Shorter Columbia Anthology of Traditional Chinese Literature by : Victor H. Mair
Download or read book The Shorter Columbia Anthology of Traditional Chinese Literature written by Victor H. Mair and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-03 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its fresh translations by newer voices in the field, its broad scope, and its flowing style, this anthology places the immense riches of Chinese literature within easy reach. Ranging from the beginnings to 1919, this abridged version of The Columbia Anthology of Traditional Chinese Literature retains all the characteristics of the original. In putting together these selections Victor H. Mair interprets "literature" very broadly to include not just literary fiction, poetry, and drama, but folk and popular literature, lyrics and arias, elegies and rhapsodies, biographies, autobiographies and memoirs, letters, criticism and theory, and travelogues and jokes.
Book Synopsis Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland's Tropics by : Derrick Stone
Download or read book Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland's Tropics written by Derrick Stone and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queensland’s tropics provide numerous environments for enjoyable walking: lush rainforests, cloud-shrouded mountains, extinct volcanoes, savanna woodlands, and magnificent beaches on the coast and Great Barrier Reef islands. This book brings together more than 150 of the best walks, tracks or trails in Queensland’s tropics, located within the coastal strip between Rockhampton and Cooktown. Walks vary from short boardwalk strolls in the lowland rainforests of Daintree National Park to 4-6 day hiking and camping trips on Hinchinbrook Island. Other routes follow old gold miners’ and forestry tracks or coaching routes or feature historical sites, rivers, lagoons, geological and geographical formations or much earlier Aboriginal communication tracks where Dreamtime stories add a further dimension. Man-made environments of abandoned gold towns, heritage riverfronts, Art Deco streetscapes and Second World War installations also feature. Most routes are best completed during the ‘Dry’ season (May to October) and walked by moderately fit individuals. Most do not require specialist navigation or bushcraft skills. Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland’s Tropics highlights the best the region has to offer. Easy-to-interpret maps are included to help you navigate, and the book’s size makes it convenient to carry in the backpack.

Download or read book Baptised Among Crocodiles written by Russell Guy and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometime around 1930, an Irish Pentecostal missionary, Isobella Hetherington arrived at Mossman in Far North Queensland. She was accompanied by an Aboriginal woman named Nellie who was a talented vocalist. Together they began ministering to the Kuku Yulanji Aboriginal people who had been forced to gather in small groups throughout the Daintree Rainforest. Ten years later, a Mission was built on land purchased by the Assembly of God (Qld.) Beside the Daintree River and fifty to seventy people moved there. For the next twenty years, they grew bananas and pineapples, built homes and struggled with a government policy that controlled most aspects of their lives. This is the story of how, in rapidly changing world, the Kuku Yulanji and the Missionaries sought to understand each other at a time before Reconciliation became a national objective.

Book Synopsis ON TRANS NATIVE AMERN LIT by : SWANN BRAIN
Download or read book ON TRANS NATIVE AMERN LIT written by SWANN BRAIN and published by Smithsonian Books (DC). This book was released on 1992-04-17 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the oldest poetry of the Americas may have been composed before Caedmon's "Hymn" (ca. 680), the earliest known English poem, the languages and literatures of Native American peoples have only recently begun to receive the critical attention they demand. In this book, twenty-three scholars in linguistics, folklore, English, and anthropology--among them Dennis Tedlock, John Bierhorst, Dell Hymes, Judith Berman, Miguel Leon-Portilla, and Louise M. Burkhart--provide a working introduction to the history, methods, and problems of translating Native American literatures. Reviewing early translations, the contributors discuss the difficulties in working with oral literature and a vast diversity of languages. Other essays analyze translations of North, Central, and South American songs and stories, from Boas's Kwakw'ala texts to Papago legalese and modern Yucatec-Maya oral literature. Approaching Native American literatures from a perspective both practical and theoretical, this collection seeks to find the meeting point between literature and the social sciences.
Book Synopsis The Poetry and Music of Joaquín Sabina by : Daniel J. Nappo
Download or read book The Poetry and Music of Joaquín Sabina written by Daniel J. Nappo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetry and Music of Joaquín Sabina: An Angel with Black Wings is a thoroughly researched exploration of the life, music, and song lyrics of the celebrated Spanish singer-songwriter Joaquín Sabina. Often called "the Spanish Dylan," Sabina has established his own highly poetic space over the course of his forty-plus years as a recording artist. Using selected song lyrics from his fifteen studio and three major live albums, Daniel J. Nappo analyzes Sabina's use of antithesis, simile, metaphor, synesthesia, rhyme, and other rhetorical and poetic devices. Nappo also devotes a chapter to Sabina's ability as a narrator and concludes the book with a comparison of Sabina's best work with that of the American singer-songwriter and Nobel laureate, Bob Dylan.
