Book excerpt: Liquid Dreams is an art series I decided to make using the thematic concept of dreams as a subject - a project that took me two years to accomplish. With more than 150 art pieces created as diptychs (As an art term a diptych is an artwork consisting of two pieces or panels, that together create a singular art piece these can be attached together or presented adjoining each other). Materials are majorly in Acrylics and Acrylics pens on black paper. I wanted to create a cohesive art book, in which I hope will spark a beautiful world of imagination and dream like galaxies in your head. I tend to imagine my dreams as brush strokes liquidizing in the ether - somewhere in space - in the galaxies we can’t reach. Galaxies are where our dreams are stored, where we all float and swim with our imaginative minds.

Book excerpt: In 1968 a team of scientists and engineers from RCA announced the creation of a new form of electronic display that relied upon an obscure set of materials known as liquid crystals. At a time when televisions utilized bulky cathode ray tubes to produce an image, these researchers demonstrated how liquid crystals could electronically control the passage of light. One day, they predicted, liquid crystal displays would find a home in clocks, calculators—and maybe even a television that could hang on the wall. Half a century later, RCA’s dreams have become a reality, and liquid crystals are the basis of a multibillion-dollar global industry. Yet the company responsible for producing the first LCDs was unable to capitalize upon its invention. In The TVs of Tomorrow, Benjamin Gross explains this contradiction by examining the history of flat-panel display research at RCA from the perspective of the chemists, physicists, electrical engineers, and technicians at the company’s central laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey. Drawing upon laboratory notebooks, internal reports, and interviews with key participants, Gross reconstructs the development of the LCD and situates it alongside other efforts to create a thin, lightweight replacement for the television picture tube. He shows how RCA researchers mobilized their technical expertise to secure support for their projects. He also highlights the challenges associated with the commercialization of liquid crystals at RCA and Optel—the RCA spin-off that ultimately manufactured the first LCD wristwatch. The TVs of Tomorrow is a detailed portrait of American innovation during the Cold War, which confirms that success in the electronics industry hinges upon input from both the laboratory and the boardroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a work of fiction. Places, events, and situations in this story are purely fictional. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is coincidental. Little Girl Black confronts colorism and the black sheep syndrome and the many shades it comes in. That old saying don’t judge a book by its cover—I say open the book up and slowly read the literature in side, cover to cover, before forming an opinion. You may be pleasantly surprised on what you read. Bump what you hear, boss up, and form your own opinions. This book and all my Little Girl Black poetry books volumes 1 to 6 celebrate and confront dreams, religion, marriage, unfairness, sex, friendship, racism, strength, judgments, fantasy, love, education, families, power, and death, as well as many other situations. Life will sometimes come to you whether you’re looking for it or not. Here comes life kicking down your doors; it just walks in and puts its filthy feet up on your clean glass table, getting extremely comfortable, and you say to yourself, “What the hell is going on?” This is a good time to get down on your knees and give it all to the Lord, like in the play Your Arms Are Too Short to Box with God. Please let him do his job, but take notes. Ding, ding! The school of life is in session. The black sheep syndrome is not because you’re an African American or black or brown. Yes, being racist or racism plays a big part when a whole race is condemned because of the pigment in their skin, but there are little girl blacks and little boy blacks in every race that lives in every family. No one can stop you from dreaming. Your dreams live in your heart, mind, body, and soul; so every time you close your eyes to dream a little dream, hum a little tune, or recite a little poem, stop and introduce yourself to your destiny and say, “Hello, I’m so please to finally meet you. I have been waiting for you.” Yes, colorism. Racism within our own race—we all play a part. I say no matter what shade of chocolate you may be, love yourself, live to be mature, and dream to succeed and achieve everything your little heart desires. Unfairness or jealousy and looking down upon someone for whatever reasons and sometimes no reasons at all, just because who you look like or who you belong to—this syndrome is taught and learned and follows that little girl black or little boy black for generations. I say to all of you bullies and dream-stealers, shame on you. You need to check yourself!

They are rare, sought after, and they fetch a price higher than diamond or gold. Alec was born in the era of the pale generations, generations of individuals with white streaks on their skin, blank eyes staring off in the distance, and soul hollow from having lost the natural ability to dream. He was one of the rare individuals in this era who still retained the gift of dreaming, a gift he considered both a blessing and a curse. When he joined The League of the Dream Hunters, an elite organization formed to retrieve stolen dreams and return them to their owners, it was for only two reasons—to look for his missing brother and to find the dream that was stolen from their family so many years back, one that cost the life of both of his parents. In the league, he learned more about the pale generations and the Makus. He discovered that there was so much more to the gift that he had and so much more about the world he thought he knew. And as he grew nearer towards finding his brother and the lost dream, he had to face the guilt that had consumed him since his parents’ death, the immensity of the gift he had, and the responsibility that came with it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critiques the use of psychiatric labelling and psychiatric narratives in everyday areas of institutional and social life across the globe. It engages an interpretive sociology, emphasising the medial and individual everyday practices of medicalisation, and their role in establishing and diffusing conceptions of mental (ab)normality. The reconstruction of psychiatric narratives is currently taking place in multiple contexts, many of which are no longer strictly psychiatric. On the one hand, psychiatric narratives now pervade contemporary public discourses and institutions though advertising, news and internet sites. On the other hand, professionals like social workers, teachers, counsellors, disability advisors, lawyers, nurses and/or health insurance staff dealing with psychiatric narratives are becoming servants of the psychiatric discourse within “troubled person’s industries”. Abstract academic categories get turned into concrete aggrieved victims of these categorisations and academic formulas turned into individual narratives. To receive support it seems, one must be labelled. The practice-oriented micro-sociological field with which this volume is concerned has only recently begun to integrate itself into public and academic debates regarding medicalisation and the social role of psychiatry. Discussions on the evolution and expansion of official diagnoses within academia, and society in general, frequently overlook the individualised roles of psychiatric diagnoses and the experiences of those involved and affected by these processes, an oversight which this volume seeks to both highlight and address.
