Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aim: To assess linear anteroposterior changes of the upper lip following upper incisor retraction in a racially heterogenous group of patients treated at the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of the Western Cape. Materials and Methods: Pre-treatment (Tl) and post-treatment (T2) lateral cephalograms of cases involving retraction of upper incisors as part of orthodontic treatment were selected irrespective of sex and age. A sample size of 70 was statistically determined. Tracings and measurements of the linear anteroposterior positions of both the upper incisor and the upper lip were done from Tl and T2 lateral ccphalograms. Upper incisor measurements were taken > from two landmarks; namely, prosthion (Pro) and upper incisor protrusion (UIP). Upper lip measurements were taken from labrale superius (Ls). Lip strain calculations were also recorded from the lateral cephalograms. Results and discussion: The correlation between upper incisor and upper lip positional changes was examined using correlation coefficients and regression of Ls on Pro and Ls on UIP. Pro in the general sample had a correlation coefficient of 0.699, while the male and the female samples had 0.699 and 0.722, respectively.

Book excerpt: This book acquaints the clinician with the full range of parameters that need to be considered before undertaking an esthetic rehabilitation with veneers and describes current clinical concepts and techniques. The initial chapters provide the foundation for a comprehensive treatment plan. It is explained how digital smile design in conjunction with a wax-up and functional esthetic prototype allow a patient to visualize the possibilities. Occlusion prior to the initiation of treatment and following treatment is key to the longevity of restorations, and this aspect is given careful consideration. Detailed advice is also offered on proper selection of materials and their placement. The guidance provided will ensure that the reader is fully equipped to gather and assess all relevant information prior to commencement of the final treatment. The treatment itself can range from minimally invasive to more complex depending on the requirements of each individual case. Among the clinical concepts discussed in the book are the use of etched porcelain restorations, minimally invasive CAD/CAM veneers, and the ink glue technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open-Bite Malocclusion: Treatment and Stability presents the etiology, treatment, and its stability of anterior open bite malocclusion in the early, mixed, and permanent dentitions. Special emphasis is devoted to orthodontic treatment and its stability in the permanent dentition because this is the time when treatment of open bite presents greater relapse. Appropriate for clinicians, orthodontic residents, and dental students, Open-Bite Malocclusion covers the most simple treatment approaches to the most complex, from orthodontic devices to tooth extraction to surgery. Unique to this book is the discussion of post-treatment stability. Drs. Janson and Valarelli highlight the post-treatment changes and presents strategies to increase treatment stability. This allows the clinician to be able to predict the stability probabilities when treating anterior open bite malocclusions in the permanent dentition either with or without extraction, orthodontic-surgical therapy, or with occlusal adjustment.
