Ils dressent également un portrait du contexte sociolinguistique actuel, tel qu'il se présente à la suite de la politique linguistique, et qui est en quelque sorte la toile de fond de l'intégration linguistique à réaliser. Ce contexte est de plus en plus marqué par la diversité linguistique, non seulement à cause de l'existence de deux groupes linguistiques majeurs, mais aussi parce que, à l'intérieur de ces deux groupes, il existe de nombreuses différences parmi ceux qui les composent. Pour décrire ces situations, les auteurs utilisent de façon exhaustive plusieurs données disponibles dans les recensements ainsi que des données ethnographiques. Ils constatent alors que l'intégration linguistique des immigrants à la société québécoise se fait dans un contexte où plusieurs conditions empêchent une action convergente vers une intégration qui se ferait seulement en français. Dans la deuxième partie, ils se intéressent à la diversité des profils d'intégration linguistique des immigrants pour évaluer de quelle façon ceux-ci s'adaptent au contexte décrit dans la première partie. À partir de ces constatations, les auteurs proposent, dans la troisième partie des réflexions sur les orientations que les politiques linguistiques pourraient privilégier si l'on veut agir de façon judicieuse et efficace dans ce contexte de très grande diversité linguistique.--Document.
