Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much research has been done on the social messages conveyed to children reading or listening to fairy tales. In this highly original study, the emphasis shifts from content to linguistic expression. The language and linguistic organization of a dozen versions, old and new, of the Little Red Riding Hood story are analyzed using a variety of theoretical approaches, including Critical Discourse Analysis, Conversational Analysis, Functional Grammar and Critical Stylistics, to uncover the contribution of fairy tales to the discourse of gender relations over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grimm Language addresses a number of issues in the Grimms’ fairy tales from a (Germanic) linguist’s point of view. In sections dealing with the Grimms’ use of regional dialect material, various grammatical constructions, and specific nouns and adjectives in their Children’s and Household Tales, the author argues that the Grimms were consciously or unconsciously following a number of objectives. These included reinforcing the overall Germanic impression of the tales (though we now know that many of them had French inspiration), striking the right balance between archaic and colloquial language to arrive at an ideal narrative style for what was arguably a new genre, and promoting or at least reflecting stereotypes concerning the proper roles for boys and girls. The book will be of interest not only to those interested in fairy tales, and the Grimms’ in particular, but also more generally to those interested in the intersection between linguistics and literary scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book combines two main perspectives: the study of the social unconscious and the study of fairy tales. Examining different versions of fairy tales told by different ethnic communities teaches us about the relations between universal and local/cultural aspects of the social unconscious. Exploring the unique status of fairy tales as located on the border line between concrete/somatic and abstract/linguistic realms sheds light on different levels of the human mind. The book focuses on a specific phenomenon common in fairy tales: a realization of idiomatic expressions - a phenomenon in which an abstract/mental idea is hidden behind a concrete event embedded in the plot. Deciphering the abstract idea out of the pictorial world of the fairy tale enables to understand the stories in a way which is not available otherwise. The book suggests interdisciplinary examination, reminding us the rich, deep messages hidden in fairy tales, and connecting us to early developments in the field of psychoanalysis, by suggesting new interpretation to old, ancient material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Like most people my age, I grew up with Grimm’s Fairytales, and much like most of us, I didn’t even know it. It was through watching Disney movies as a child that I was first exposed to many of the Grimms’ stories. Stories like ‘Little Red Cap’ and ‘Briar Rose’ don’t immediately ring a bell, until you look closer and realize that they are the foundation for Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty, respectively. Even the classic story of Cinderella originates here. There was one aspect of the book, however that I found particularly interesting, something that most definitely isn’t present in the movies. Grimms’ fairytales are by and large a rather dark bunch of tales. While the Disney versions of these stories are often portrayed as very clear cut messages of good vs. evil, the tales themselves are often not so simple. Violence, particularly violence against children seems to be a running theme in the book; and more often than not someone dies horrifically at the end, occasionally it’s even the hero of the story! To me it seems that the original intent of the Grimms’ collection of tales was to provide more cautionary tales, than entertaining ones. I would certainly think twice before reading this collection to very young children, particularly before bedtime. Then again, perhaps it is only a sign of the times in which the book was written, young people were far less sheltered from the realities of death and violence in the early 1800’s (and even earlier, for some of the older stories) than they are today, and as such might indeed have found these stories to be equally as entertaining and influential as children in modern times have found Disney’s versions to be. MEET THE AUTHOR Lynn Brown wrote her first book at the age of 6, to the wild acclaim of her kindergarten class. Sometime later she graduated from Naropa University with an Interdisciplinary degree in Writing, Peace and Indigenous Peoples Studies. She is a staff writer for DoGoodFeelGreat.com, and has been published in Colorado Daily News, the Bywater-Currents Magazine and Whoisisabella.com. In addition, she sometimes serves as a grantwriter for various nonprofit organizations. Lynn is currently working on an urban fantasy novel, entitled Wonderland, based on the city of New Orleans and its mythology. Her novel writing process and clips from this work can be found at: wonderlandnovel.wordpress.com EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The book is actually a collection of over 200 stories. It was originally separated into several volumes that were published over a span of time between 1812 and 1818. The book also underwent several edits and rewrites, most of which seem to have been in reaction to unfavorable reviews by the public. Despite the fact that the brothers Grimm had originally compiled the stories as a means of preserving German oral history, many people at the time felt it just wasn’t German enough. There was also the issue of it being considered a bit too dark for children, even in the 1800’s. Still, the legacy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales has endured. In addition to modern retellings of the stories in the collection, the author’s themselves have worked their way into our imaginations as well. Several movies and TV shows have recently been made about them (some more historically accurate than others), including the recent TV series entitled Grimm and the movie The Brothers Grimm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains some selected topics of current interest around the world in the mathematical analysis of natural language. The book is divided into four sections: - analytical algebraic models - models from the theory of formal grammars and automata, with interest mainly in syntax - model-theoretic concepts in semantics or pragmatics, and - a final section containing some applications in computational linguistics. The varied perspectives illustrated in the book confirm that Mathematical Linguistics has finally introduced scientific methods into a previously fuzzy field, through the use of mathematical reasoning. The text will contribute to a fruitful convergence between linguists, mathematicians, logicians, computer scientists, cognitive scientists and others interested in the formal treatment of natural language and the research of its properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accessible and cutting-edge, this text is a pivotal update to the field and offers a much-needed critical perspective on world language education. Building off their classic 2002 book, The Foreign Language Educator in Society, Timothy G. Reagan and Terry A. Osborn address major issues facing the world language educator today, including language myths, advocacy, the perceived and real benefits of language learning, linguistic human rights, constructivism, learning theories, language standards, monolingualism, bilingualism and multiculturalism. Organized into three parts – "Knowing Language," "Learning Language," and "Teaching Language" – this book applies a critical take on conventional wisdom on language education, evaluates social and political realities, assumptions, and controversies in the field. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion to support students and educators in developing their own perspectives on teaching and learning languages. With a critical pedagogy and social justice lens, this book is ideal for scholars and students in foreign/world language education, social justice education, and language teaching methodology courses, as well as pre- and in-service teachers.

The book is structured into four parts. Part I comprises syntactic studies on the auxiliary verb get in Indian English, the grammar of verbs capable of occurring with or without an object in Contemporary English, and isolated if-clauses. Part II includes two papers dealing with word formation patterns and with crosslinguistic influences on motion expression in English and Spanish. The studies in Part III discuss topics related to second language acquisition, such as the difficulties encountered by Spanish speakers in learning English pronunciation, verbal morphology production by Japanese learners of English, and the effects of elicitation on students’ production of English past tense forms. The papers in Part IV revolve around discourse analysis and psycholinguistics, addressing topics such as automatic sentiment detection, perspectival construal patterns in language and cognition, and the effect of emotional valence on disambiguation processes.

This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The digital age has had a profound effect on our cultural heritage and the academic research that studies it. Staggering amounts of objects, many of them of a textual nature, are being digitised to make them more readily accessible to both experts and laypersons. Besides a vast potential for more effective and efficient preservation, management, and presentation, digitisation offers opportunities to work with cultural heritage data in ways that were never feasible or even imagined. To explore and exploit these possibilities, an interdisciplinary approach is needed, bringing together experts from cultural heritage, the social sciences and humanities on the one hand, and information technology on the other. Due to a prevalence of textual data in these domains, language technology has a crucial role to play in this endeavour. Language technology can break through the "Google barrier" by offering the potential to analyse texts at advanced levels, extracting information and knowledge at the level of the humanities or social sciences researcher, who wants to know about the who, what, where, and when, but also the how and the why. At the same time cultural heritage data poses considerable challenges for existing language technology: technology aimed at "generic" language has to face such disparate problems as historical language variation, OCR digitisation errors, and near-extinct academic expertise. This book is primarily intended for researchers in information technology and language processing who would like to receive a state-of-the-art overview of the whole breadth of the new and vibrant field of language technology for cultural heritage and its associated academic research in the humanities and social sciences. Researchers working in the target domains of cultural heritage, the social sciences and humanities will also find this book useful, as it provides an overview of how language technology can help them with their information needs. The book covers applications ranging from pre-processing and data cleaning, to the adaptation and compilation of linguistic resources, to personalisation, narrative analysis, visualisation and retrieval.
