Book excerpt: Excerpt from Linguistic Families of California Several other possible cases of kinship presented themselves to the writers at various times, as between Wintun and Maidu, Maidu and Yokuts, Chumash and Salinan, and even Yuman and Esselen, and several brief lists of similarities were compiled by them. Once or twice allusions to these possibilities found their way into print.6 But, on the whole, the resemblances seemed scant and best interpretable as due either to coincidence or borrowing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Languages of the Coast of California North of San Francisco To Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst, whose generosity began ten years ago to secure for the University of California a valuable series of anthropological museum collections, and has since supported an Ethnological and Archaeological Survey of California, the credit is due for the following pages. The paper completes the preliminary studies of a grammatical nature made by the author among the languages of California since 1901. Taken in conjunction with his previous articles in this series and those prepared by other investigators working for the University, together with the studies made of several languages of northeastern California by Dr. R. B. Dixon, and the two or three works published before Mrs. Hearst enabled the University to turn its attention to the field, the present paper brings the knowledge of the subject to a point where at least some information is available on the structure of practically every linguistic family in the state. The territory covered by the present treatise is that lying between the Coast range and the sea from San Francisco to the northern boundary of the state. Two languages in this area have previously been monographically treated in the present series of publications: the Athabascan family as represented by Hupa, by Dr. Goddard,1 and Chimariko, an isolated stock, by Dr. Dixon.2 These are accordingly not included here. Those sketched are, in order from south to north, Miwok, Porno, Yuki, Wiyot, Yurok, Karok. Further studies of Yurok are in progress; and the author hopes to continue a more detailed examination of Yuki and Karok. No attempt at an exhaustive treatment of these languages has therefore been made: the descriptions of them are preliminary. The accounts given of the other three languages make use of all the information that has been gathered, and are therefore somewhat fuller. It must be clearly understood that while languages may be spoken of, it is really linguistic families that are dealt with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere was the linguistic diversity of the New World more extreme than in California, where an extraordinary variety of village-dwelling peoples spoke seventy-eight mutually unintelligible languages. This comprehensive illustrated handbook, a major synthesis of more than 150 years of documentation and study, reviews what we now know about California's indigenous languages. Victor Golla outlines the basic structural features of more than two dozen language types and cites all the major sources, both published and unpublished, for the documentation of these languages—from the earliest vocabularies collected by explorers and missionaries, to the data amassed during the twentieth-century by Alfred Kroeber and his colleagues, to the extraordinary work of John P. Harrington and C. Hart Merriam. Golla also devotes chapters to the role of language in reconstructing prehistory, and to the intertwining of language and culture in pre-contact California societies, making this work, the first of its kind, an essential reference on California’s remarkable Indian languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteen personal accounts of endangered language preservation, plus a how-to guide for parents looking to do the same in their own home. Throughout the world individuals in the intimacy of their homes innovate, improvise, and struggle daily to pass on endangered languages to their children. Elaina Albers of Northern California holds a tape recorder up to her womb so her baby can hear old songs in Karuk. The Baldwin family of Montana put labels all over their house marked with the Miami words for common objects and activities, to keep the vocabulary present and fresh. In Massachusetts, at the birth of their first daughter, Jesse Little Doe Baird and her husband convince the obstetrician and nurses to remain silent so that the first words their baby hears in this world are Wampanoag. Thirteen autobiographical accounts of language revitalization, ranging from Irish Gaelic to Mohawk, Kawaiisu to Maori, are brought together by Leanne Hinton, professor emerita of linguistics at UC Berkeley, who for decades has been leading efforts to preserve the rich linguistic heritage of the world. Those seeking to save their language will find unique instruction in these pages; everyone who admires the human spirit will find abundant inspiration. Languages featured: Anishinaabemowin, Hawaiian, Irish, Karuk, Kawaiisu, Kypriaka, Maori, Miami, Mohawk, Scottish Gaelic, Wampanoag, Warlpiri, Yuchi “Practical and down to earth, philosophical and spiritual, Bringing Our Languages Home describes the challenges and joys of learning and passing on your language. It gives good detailed advice . . . Fantastic! I hope millions will read it!” —Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, Åbo Akademi University, Finland, emerita “This rare collection by scholar-activist Leanne Hinton brings forward deeply affecting accounts of families determined to sustain their languages amidst a sea of dominant-language pressures. The stories could only be told by those who have experienced the joys and challenges such an undertaking demands. Drawing lessons from these accounts, Hinton leaves readers with a wealth of language planning strategies. This powerful volume will long serve as a seminal resource for families, scholars, and language planners around the world.” —Teresa L. McCarty, George F. Kneller Chair in Education and Anthropology, University of California, Los Angeles

Book excerpt: Before outsiders arrived, about 100 distinct Indian languages were spoken in California, many of them alive today. Each of these languages represents a unique way of understanding the world and expressing that understanding. Flutes of Fire examines many different aspects of Indian languages: languages, such as Yana, in which men and women have markedly different ways of speaking; ingenious ways used in each language for counting. Hinton discusses how language can retain evidence of ancient migrations, and addresses what different groups are doing to keep languages alive and pass them down to the younger generations.
