Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico is currently facing severe problems with water availability, wastage and contamination. The most contaminated and over-exploited water resources are concentrated in the most populated areas of the country, where water is scarcer and its quality makes it unsuitable for a variety of uses, including human consumption. At the same time it is indisputable that water quality is a determining factor in public health and ecosystems. The significant growth in population and industry results in a high demand for water, along with contaminating discharges, few of which are treated – and the impact upon the ecosystems is evident. This book addresses all these topics in a single volume, taking into account the challenges presented by the economic, institutional and environmental considerations in Mexico’s water policy framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book introduces readers to the central question of borders in the twenty-first century. After familiarizing readers with border thinking and making from antiquity to the present, Gabriel Popescu turns a critical eye on current border-making concepts, processes, and contexts. Throughout, he offers a balanced understanding of borders, explaining why and how interstate borders have emerged, whose interest they serve, who is involved in border making, and how border-making practices affect societies. Assessing the latest theoretical approaches to border studies, the author deftly incorporates a range of disciplinary perspectives, including geography, international relations, sociology, history, security studies, and anthropology. Popescu exploresrecent world events, discussing how current issues such as migration, terrorism, global warming, pandemics, the human rights regime, outsourcing, the economic crisis, supranational integration, regionalization, and digital technology relate to borders andinfluence our lives. Written with a clear eye and voice, this book makes a complex subject accessible to a wide readership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 50 percent of the world's landmass covered by river basins shared by two or more states, competition over water resources has always had the potential to spark violence. And growing populations and accelerating demands for fresh water are putting ever greater pressures on already scarce water resources. In this wide-ranging study, Arun Elhance explores the hydropolitics of six of the world's largest river basins. In each case, Elhance examines the basin's physical, economic, and political geography; the possibilities for acute conflict; and efforts to develop bilateral and multilateral agreements for sharing water resources. The case studies lead to some sobering conclusions about impediments to cooperation but also to some encouraging ones--among them, that it may not be possible for Third World states to solve their water problems by going to war, and that eventually even the strongest riparian states are compelled to seek cooperation with their weaker neighbors.

Book excerpt: In today's "global village", nearly 450 million people speak English while another 350 million speak Spanish. The United States alone, with its more than 22 million Hispanic Americans, is now considered by many to be a bilingual society. As the practice of law and the resolution of legal issues, to a great extent, is all about precise communication, the impact of this on legal and business professionals is obvious - Spanish/English, English/Spanish translations are fast becoming an indispensable component of any thriving law practice or business, be it a small company or a multinational corporation. Translations are now routinely required for trials, contracts, real estate and financial transactions, and in many other situations. Clearly then, the need for a comprehensive bilingual reference such as this one has never been greater. Wiley's English/Spanish and Spanish/English Legal Dictionary offers comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of more than 40,000 essential words and phrases spanning all legal disciplines and subdisciplines including construction, real estate, insurance, business, trial, environmental law, intellectual property, family law, and more. It was written by a professional translator in collaboration with an advisory committee comprising attorneys from some of the most prominent firms in the international legal community. Featuring an extremely user-friendly format, the Dictionary was designed for quick reference. It directs you instantly to the precise equivalent you need without first "rerouting" you through a maze of other irrelevant terms and phrases. Gender neutral equivalents are provided, and in cases where the nongender neutral term is the norm, both are given.Wiley's English/Spanish and Spanish/English Legal Dictionary puts all important English and Spanish legal terms at the fingertips of attorneys, businesspeople, paralegals, and law students. It belongs on the shelves of law firms, libraries, businesses, and international agencies. It is also an essential communications tool for translators, interpreters, and civil servants.
